Why I want phones in cameras, not the other way around Video

Why I want phones in cameras, not the other way around

They say the best camera is the one you have with you -- which is why the camera is such a popular feature on phones. But as compact camera sales struggle, it's worth pointing out that a smart phone can never replace a camera. Instead, cameras should replace phones.

Why would you carry around a separate camera when your phone takes photos too? Why pay for a separate camera that locks up your pictures on a memory card when you could just share them to Facebook at the touch of a button? Because it's the right tool for the job, that's why. Continue reading...

Video: How to use the Large Hadron Collider as a time machine Video

With apparently no regard for the possibility of creating black holes in the middle of Switzerland, the Large Hadron Collider is at this very moment slamming sub-atomic particles into each other at close to the speed of light. No doubt this is fiddly business, and no doubt the scientists at CERN are some of the best and brightest.

In their lust for knowledge, however, could this intrepid bunch have also created a machine that could be used to travel into the future? In this video we look at the possibility of using the Large Hadron Collider as a time machine. Continue reading...

Sony Xperia S shows off NFC tech in our video Video

We got our first look at the Sony Xperia S -- the first Sony phone to have dropped the Ericsson name -- over at CES and we're cautiously optimistic about its 720p screen, dual-core processor and unusual see-through strip design. Today we went hands-on again, to see what trickery it's up to with NFC.

NFC (that's near-field communications) is the technology that allows devices to communicate simply by touching. It's the same gubbins found in London's Oyster cards and we've been hearing for years that it'll revolutionise contactless payments, allowing you to pay for your shopping at the till just by tapping your phone on a reader. HTC Explorer proves a smart budget choice in video review Video

It's easy to get distracted by the glitzy phones we drool over on a daily basis here at CNET UK, but the HTC Explorer comes as a timely reminder that sometimes all you need is an easy-to-use phone that looks smart, is smart and can be bought SIM-free for only £130.

Leaving the nuclear arms race of dual-core, quad-core, and no doubt soon-to-be-octo-core chips to the processor spotters, the HTC Explorer settles for a modest 600MHz chip. That sounds like it wouldn't power your toaster -- it's low even compared to budget smart phone competitors like the Orange San Francisco 2. Continue reading...

Fujifilm X10 camera proves a real keeper in our video review Video

With technology evolving at lightspeed, it's hard to imagine buying a gadget you would treat as a long-term companion. That said, we believe the Fujifilm X10 is a keeper -- the kind of camera you'll get to know slowly, take home to meet the parents and will want on your arm, or in your camera bag, for a long time to come.

Good-looking and serious, the X10 is coated in black leather which gives it a luxurious feel and a classic, timeless appearance -- you certainly wouldn't be ashamed to be seen out and about with it. The body has been crafted from smooth and sturdy magnesium alloy and is dotted with buttons and switches, which make a refreshing change to the dip-in menu systems seen on most digital compact cameras. Video: Light-based CPUs could break the terahertz barrier Video

It happens every time: as soon as we wax a load of cash on the latest gadget, the price of said tech will suddenly drop. A year later, regular as clockwork, the value of our gadget will have nose-dived to the extent that we'd be lucky to get 20p and a packet of wine gums for it on eBay.

Ho-hum -- that's the price we pay for being early adopters. But have you ever wondered why, in these austere times, everything else seems to be getting more and more expensive while technology is becoming more and more affordable? Continue reading...
