HTC One series released and Ice Cream Sandwich woes in video Video

Welcome along to this week's episode of Phone News, the video show that does what it says in the, er, title. Jason begins with the glorious news that HTC's One range will be available to buy from Thursday. Even better is the news that, unlike last year's HTC phones, they're not rubbish!

Leading the pack is the HTC One X, the first quad-core phone we've had a chance to test properly. It's incredibly fast in benchmark tests, but alas there's a price to pay, and that's battery life. Continue reading...

HTC One X tested in video: Great camera, bad battery Video

Reading the spec list of the HTC One X, it looks like it has everything the hard-core early adopter could want. Quad-core chip? Check. Massive screen with a high resolution? Check. 8-megapixel camera that can shoot 1080p video? Yep.

But what the spec sheet won't tell you is there's a price to pay for all this power, and it's the battery, which didn't last very long on the review phone Natasha was given to test. Continue reading...

Samsung SUR40 touchscreen table in video: Does it have legs? Video

Meet Samsung's biggest touchscreen gadget yet. The SUR40 is a 40-inch table so massive it puts even the enormous Galaxy Note to shame. Armed with quirky touch tech, Samsung wants to see one of these bad boys installed in every shop and business in the land. But does it stand a chance? Hit play on the video above to see me go hands-on.

The SUR40 itself looks like a honking great telly lying on its side, with four legs poking out the bottom to turn it into a massively pricey table. It's got a touchscreen that supports 50 different touch points, and uses an interesting technology -- dubbed PixelSense -- to do so. Continue reading...

iPhone 5 in production and Galaxy S2 update woes in video Video

In this week's Phone News, we discuss whether the iPhone 5 might be going into production, your anger at Samsung's delays in bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the huge number of downloads for the latest outing of Angry Birds.

A new report has been leaked that indicates that Foxconn -- the massive Chinese manufacturing plant that makes Apple products -- has hired 20,000 new staff. What could this possibly mean? Well, the smart money says that they're there to help with a massive order to build the iPhone 5. Continue reading...

New iPad global network speed test shames the UK Video

Apple's new iPad has had its network speeds tested around the globe, but the results aren't too rosy for the UK -- hit play on the video above to see quite how dismal our networks look compared with the rest of the world.

Brave CNETeers from our San Francisco, London, Singapore and Sydney offices took the new iPad outside to conduct a series of speed trials, in order to determine which nation affords iPad owners the fastest network speeds. And it sure as sausages ain't us. Continue reading...

Apple's new iPad in video review Video

Apple has been the leader in the tablet market since it launched the original iPad in 2010, and two models later with no radical design overhaul, people still can't get enough of this sleek slab of tech.

The new iPad went on sale today, and you can take a look at what Luke makes of the new Apple slate by hitting the play button on the video review above. Continue reading...

New iPad unboxed in video Video

Perhaps, unlike some of us, you did not queue up at midnight to nab yourself a new iPad, instead craftily pre-ordering online and waiting for it to be delivered to your front door.

But what's that? You're still waiting? That's painful. I bet it's killing you, isn't it? The knowledge that thousands of people around the world are pawing over Apple's latest must-have gadget right at this very moment must be downright torturous. Continue reading...

Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich vs Gingerbread in video Video

Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich vs Gingerbread in video

The wait is almost over! Samsung has started rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich to the Galaxy S2 -- with Poles and Swedes among the first Europeans to get the update. Lucky them.

The S2 ICS rollout isn't due to reach Blighty til 19 March, but we couldn't bear to wait that long, so we grabbed the firmware from a developer forum and flashed a rather fetching white Galaxy S2 we had lying around the office so we could take a closer look at Samsung's changes. Sony Xperia S glows but doesn't shine in video review Video

Sony's first public outing after its split with long-term partner Ericsson sees it trotting out a powerful new Android phone with enough gloss and sheen to take the limelight off the awkwardness of its break-up. Sony got custody of the Xperia name in the separation proceedings, and as such its newest blower has been christened the Xperia S. Hit play on the video above to see it reviewed in all its glory.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC runs Windows 7 on a tablet in video Video

From the outside, the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC might look like any other tablet on the market, but it's packed with a laptop processor and is running the desktop version of Windows 7.

Most tablets -- such as the iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab -- are found running on smaller, less power-hungry processors, whereas the Slate PC is packing an Intel Core i5 chip, which you'd normally find in mid-range laptops. Add on to that 4GB of RAM and you've got a seriously specced-out bit of kit. Continue reading...

New iPad UK price and hands-on test in video Video

The new iPad has just been announced and I had the chance to play with one before it goes in sale in just over a week. Design-wise, it's very similar to the iPad 2, but the main upgrade is the screen. Have a look at the video above to get a sense of what I thought.

Apple has gone for a much-awaited retina display on this model, which means that if you hold it at a reasonable distance from your eyes, you can't make out the individual pixels. The resolution of the 9.7-inch screen is 2,048x1,536 pixels, which works out at a massive 264 pixels per inch. Continue reading...

New iPad, Apple TV and more in Apple news round-up video Video

Apple has just lifted the lid on its new iPad, as well as a new version of Apple TV. Hit play on the video above to learn everything you need to know on the company's new kit, in not very much time at all.

The new iPad is the big news of the night. Dubbed simply 'iPad', this third iteration of Apple's popular slate offers the same basic design, though it's a little bit heavier and thicker, so it might be a tad more bulky to hold. Continue reading...

Best phones of Mobile World Congress we won't get in the UK Video

Mobile World Congress has concluded, but not before forever enriching our lives with a tantalising glimpse at the year's upcoming smart phones and tablets. But even the bluest skies can contain the odd raincloud -- my indescribable joy at going hands-on with all the latest tech was hampered by the knowledge that loads of the phones and tablets I was seeing would never go on sale in the UK.

Heartbreaking stuff. So grab a hankie and press play on the video above, as I guide you through the best phones of MWC that may never make it to our green and pleasant land. Continue reading...

HTC One X vs Huawei D Quad vs LG Optimus 4X HD: Quad war Video

I had a core-fully good time at Mobile World Congress this year, with the tech industry's biggest players unveiling smart phones powered by frighteningly powerful quad-core processors. Hit play on the video above to see the three coolest quad-core phones compared -- I'm taking a look at the Huawei Ascend D Quad, the LG Optimus 4X HD and the HTC One X.

HTC is no stranger to the world of high-end smart phones, having produced some truly stonking devices in the past. It's been a while since an LG smart phone blew my socks off though, and Huawei is definitely the scrappy outsider. Which company has succeeded in making a mobile that deserves your cash? HTC One X vs Galaxy Note vs LG Optimus Vu vs Eluga Power Video

Tech fans got an eyeful of some monstrous mobiles at Mobile World Congress this year as Samsung, LG, HTC and Panasonic whipped their huge handhelds out in a big blower phone-off. I got my hands on the lot of them to see how they measure up and perform in this video.

Giant phones aren't for everyone -- they won't slip easily into a pocket and are eye-wateringly expensive. But if you've got flapping great meat-plates for hands, a commute long enough to watch an entire box-set and a hankering to show off your pocket-bulge, then you'll be interested in the behemoth rivals that mobile makers unboxed at MWC. See the Eurofighter being built in behind the scenes video Video

What do the Internet, nuclear power and the jet engine have in common? They're all technologies that were invented by the military that have gone on to transform civilian life. From Roman roads -- built to enable the fast movement of troops -- to robots, our desire to blow the bejeezus out of each other in ever more innovative ways has always been one of the main drivers of new technologies.

So when I was invited to take an exclusive look at the Eurofighter Typhoon assembly plant in Lancashire, I couldn't refuse. The Typhoon is probably the most advanced fighter plane on the planet. It's got a top speed of 1,550 miles per hour, but it can turn on a dime and do tricks that would cause other planes to fall out of the sky. Hit play on the video to see what it's capable of. LG's changes to Ice Cream Sandwich in hands-on video Video

One of the surprises for me at Mobile World Congress was that the big players had so few phones running the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

One of the reasons for that is the phone manufacturers just love to mess around with it, chopping and changing the menus and features about, and that takes ages to get right. It also means it takes forever to issue an update to the software when Google changes it. Continue reading...

Ubuntu for Android is an open-source treat in hands-on video Video

To a jaded hack at a trade show, quirky oddities are like air to a drowning man, and Ubuntu for Android is certainly off the wall. Best known as a Linux alternative to desktop Windows and MacOS, Ubuntu is being re-packaged for the smart phone era by software company Canonical.

The early version I was shown at Mobile World Congress runs on a high-spec Motorola Android phone with USB and HDMI. The Android side of things worked as normal, but as soon as you plug the phone into a dock, the monitor it's connected to displays a version of Ubuntu. It's reminiscent of the Motorola Atrix, which in laptop mode used its own Linux-based OS called 'Webtop', but couldn't do much more than run Firefox. Continue reading...
