Toshiba -- 1080p TV is here

T'was the night before CES and all through the house, nothing was stirring... except the three million press conferences, product launches and spec sheets that Crave has had to sift through. Of course, we've only been giving our precious time to the very best products, which is why we've started today with Toshiba's latest onslaught of new goodies.

Our favourite on the wish-list of gadgets were two new 1080p-compatible LCD TVs. These are the highest quality high-definition pictures available. The 1080p standard isn't even supported by the Xbox 360 yet -- gamers will have to wait for the PS3 for that. Toshiba's new 42-inch and 47-inch LCD TVs are set to be released in the middle of 2006, but there's no word on pricing. Our tip is -- get saving now.

Americans like things big, especially their TVs. The assembled hacks here went wilder for some new huge DLP rear-projection TVs that Toshiba unveiled, including new 60-inch-plus 1080p models. If you don't have the thousands of pounds these sets are likely to cost, then there are also 720p models set to arrive in 50-inch and 56-inch flavours in April and May respectively.

We'll be cajoling Toshiba to let us have a prod and poke at its new screens when the show opens tomorrow. We'll let you know if they have the image quality to match the stats when we report back tomorrow. –GC
