Steve Jobs wanted an 'integrated' Apple TV

Not content with declaring thermonuclear war on Android, it seems Steve Jobs wanted to make a fully-fledged Apple TV set as well.

The reveal comes from Walter Isaacson's biography, named simply Steve Jobs, which is published on Monday. Could Apple be about to take on Sony, Samsung, LG et al. in the lounge as well as in the mobile sphere?

"He very much wanted to do for television sets what he had done for computers, music players, and phones: make them simple and elegant," Isaacson told The Washington Post. Jobs told Isaacson he wanted to "create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud."

And it seems this wasn't just pie in the sky, that he actually had a plan. "It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine," he told Isaacson. "I finally cracked it."

So this could be a product in the development stage from the sounds of things, way past the drawing board.

Apple has been rumoured to be working on a standalone TV set for years, with analysts suggesting it'd make sense as one of the few areas Apple doesn't dominate. Last year now-CEO Tim Cook referred to Apple TV as "a hobby," but could Apple be about to start taking it seriously? It certainly has the ecosystem in place, with iOS and iTunes offering more apps than other smart TVs, and Google's TV efforts hitting a stumbling block.

The last generation of Apple TV was announced in September 2010, but was a disappointing update, stiffing those of us in the UK with a paltry selection of content and high prices.
