Samsung OLED TV coming second half of 2012, not spring

Yesterday Samsung had told me its 55-inch OLED TV would be arriving in the UK this spring, but the company has since been in touch to say I was given an incorrect date -- in fact, Samsung's OLED telly will be arriving in the second half of the year.

There's currently no more information regarding dates and pricing, so Samsung's glamorously thin and bright telly could be landing at any point in the second half of 2012.

It's a shame to have our hopes of a spring release dashed, though we've got our fingers and toes crossed the OLED TV will prove worth the wait.

I was impressed when I saw it at CES -- the picture is bright and colourful, and the thin bezel surrounding the screen gives the impression that the TV is floating, like a very expensive bubble.

It will likely be up against a similar offering from LG, which also unveiled a 55-inch OLED-tech telly. LG's model looks to be fractionally slightly thinner, and features passive rather than active 3D.

Passive makes for cheaper 3D specs because they don't need to be powered or charged, but the real battle will be over superior image quality. We won't know which company offers the best OLED TV for picture brilliance until they're both ready for the full review treatment.

Stay tuned for more. In the meantime let me know what you think of OLED TV in the comments or on CNET UK's Facebook wall, and check out what I thought of Samsung's effort in the video below.

All this new technology and i still think plasmas offer the most natural looking cinematic experience for the cheapest price.

Plasmas may be good but the cost of running them in the long run is stoopid bad!

I personally can't wait for the new OLED tech to get onto the market. Should offer amazing picture quality with massive energy savings all round.

This news does not suprise me...remember Atlanta olympics? Samsung sponsor the screens for the whole gig taking oportunity to introduce their new 'Flat Screen Technology', all the commentators start talking about it and the next thing you know, it's that years must have Chirstmas present and affectively the end of the CRT TV era.

Guess what, Samsung now sponsoring 2012 and a storry like this appears...hmmm investement oportunities ahoy-hoy!

I'm so excited after reading the March 2012 issue of Consumer Report. I want it all. I have a Panasonic 51" V but want something larger. I have my heart set on a 70" plus 3D screen with all of the OLED features on a plasma screen. I'm looking forward to reading things like ultra-high definition, 4-5K resolution and light weight 3D glasses (only the best). I can wait for this new experience but I am anxious. At 76, I don't have a lot of time and this new approach to TV watching is just what I want. I don't think cost will be an issue but I would like to see you establishing a range and timetable for release.
Keep in touch, it would be welcomed.
Anxious.
