It's been a while since we last had a home cinema projector in -- we've not only been dazzled by the latest flat screens, but the InFocus range has been so good it's hard to top. So what better way to break us into the pre-Christmas spending spree than a new budget model from Hitachi?
Based on LCD technology, we weren't particularly hopeful for the image quality on the PJ-TX200, but checking out the spec sheet was enough to comfort our stat-based little minds. It has an extraordinarily high 7,000:1 contrast ratio (for shadow detail and deep colours), it's fully HD Ready (just aching to be fed some Xbox 360 action) plus it has Hitachi's 10 bit video processing to clean up images.
The results are impressive, given the average price for this projector is around £1,300. The 1,280x720-pixel resolution means that it's perfectly suited to 720p high-definition video, so it's ready to roll with high-definition satellite TV and movies even before they're available in the UK. It looks good too, compact enough to place on a coffee table and curvy enough to challenge the dull boxes that house most other projectors. We think it's best for movie viewing, but if you want to be boring you can take it into the office and plug your laptop into it. The PJ-TX200 is on sale now. -GC
