Apple TV to come in 32- and 37-inch sizes

More news on Apple's much-rumoured forthcoming standalone TV set: it'll come in 32- and 37-inch sizes, according to a report on Digitimes, and will launch sometime between April and September next year.

The size is presumably to keep the price down, because if it comes packing all the abilities we're expecting, including Siri for voice control, it should make other TVs look like something from The Flintstones.

The 'iTV' name is still sticking in this report too, though we can't see it ourselves, at least not for the UK. Apple changed the name of itsĀ Apple TV set-top box from iTV.

"The supply chain of Apple will start preparing materials for iTV sets in the first quarter of 2012 in order to meet Apple's schedule to launch the new display products in the second or third quarter of 2012, according to industry sources," reads the report.

"The displays of the new iTV sets will focus on 32- and 37-inch sizes initially, noted sources in the supply chain." That 'initially' speaks volumes, as Apple would be a fool not to launch larger sets to cater for the home cinema market. Those boys aren't shy of spending a couple of quid.

Word of the standalone set leaked in October, after Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson he wanted to do for TV sets what he'd done for computers. He wanted to "create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use. It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud."

Jobs told Isaacson: "It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it."

Other rumours include it'll have Siri on-board for voice-activated channel changing, and Kinect-style motion controls. For more, check out our complete guide.

32-37" limits it to the bedroom really - and whos going to shell out silly money for a bedroom/second tv?!

Microsoft need to push Kinect now. Kinect could offer all the features that the Apple solution is presenting at a much lower price point with much more versatility for displays. I've always said Kinect's home is in television, not gaming. Now it's up to Microsoft to realise that.

I bet Apple are patenting the TV right now. Not the Apple TV I mean just TV in general. Then they can claim they invented it :P LOL

A rumor of an Apple TV was out before...right before they released the 27" iMac. I bet (hope) these are the screen sizes for the next iMac!

If it is going to be a seller, start at 40 inch. 37"? Nah, just another Apple rumour to keep the press hot.

Why would anyone waste their money on this? I would never consider buying a TV which has a screen size of any less then 50". God I hate Apple and I would love for this to fail (if it is more then a rumor)

I hate to break it to you but Apple never revolutionised anything. They act like they're the innovators and the nutcase Steve Jobs I think actually believed everyone was stealing his ideas, but in reality there's not really anything I can think of that wasn't stolen or bought. Right from the idea of the iPod to the iPad to the iPhone to multi-touch to all-in-ones. They're bullies, not innovators.
And what Steve Jobs himself did beyond management is really beyond me. He didn't work on the software for the last 10 years, he didn't do the designing, and he wasn't really clued in to half the projects Apple were working on. He was a salesperson, not some goddamn genius like these delusionals make him out.

Only question is by the time costing of all this new innovation Apple want to have to set their panel tv's to tell it apart from the rest will it leave room for the bread and butter, i.e. a good picture quality? who will supply the panels?, will they be lcd or led? both crap unless led fully backlit which cost the earth.

Take it will be full of Samsung/Sony/ LG other branded components/panel inside with just the Apple bells & whistles gimmicks (siri, icloud) then an Apple badge glued on?

Until Apple dominates the universe of tv or you are an Apple fanboy anyone who just wants or takes their picture quality seriously just go and buy a Panny plasma! They don't cost the earth for a good one either and are still out performing the led technology for half the price.

This smells of Bang & Olufsen or Bose - All style and no substance (substance been the quality).

32" and 37"? I don't think Apple will make such small screen sizes. Consumers won't throw away their 50" smart tvs for this. If they use OLED then maybe they will make the best TVs but OLED costs the bomb.

and another thing...
The Apple TV user interface doesn't look so good; they need to revamp the whole design, kind of like Microsoft's Metro UI.

I say it should be called an Iview that would stop the complications with ITV

Why all the comments about 32" and 37" being tiny and bedroom size? They really aren't, 37" is actually quite big. No, for a bedroom you would get one of those 19" tv's.

Is the limit at 37" for the acceleromoter and gyro :-)
