Windows Phone 7.8 update paused by Microsoft

Microsoft has paused the Windows 7.8 update for older Windows Phone devices like the Nokia Lumia 800, 900 and 610, holding many mobiles on Windows 7.5 as it works to fix a glitch in the software.

I've confirmed with Nokia that the update has indeed been halted for now -- sorry news indeed for Lumia owners gagging to get hold of the new software.

Omio quotes a Nokia rep as saying that the glitch in question is a "minor issue in the Windows Phone 7.8 software," so here's hoping the update continues as planned before too long.

Windows Phone 7.8 is a halfway house between version 7.5 and Windows Phone 8, offering the refreshed homescreen and resizable live tiles that come with the latter.

Microsoft riled up fans of its patchwork operating system when it confirmed that older Windows Phone mobiles wouldn't be getting an update to Windows Phone 8. This punished anyone who opted into the new platform in its first year with a mobile that wouldn't get an update to the full-blooded software.

Windows Phone 7.8 should give your older smart phone a shot in the arm though. The update leaked in December, so if you're desperate to try the new software, it can be done. You'll need to flash your phone first though, so proceed at your own risk.

Are you excited to see what Windows Phone is going to do next? Or would you rather see current smart phones getting the latest software? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall

Says Luke, the Apple fan who doesn't actually have one.

So, no. Not really.

I have got a Nokia Lumia 920, but very disappointed with because when you start makeing a call, the screen goes black and you can not hang up or end the call unless the other side does!! What a stupid and annoyed error. The sensor has many trouble issue. I even fed back the h**l Nokia but they did not response at all. I really feel so sorry for getting this rubbish devise. I never expereinced any fault with galaxy S2 and S3. Indeed I am just waiting for the S4 in order to feed the bin with the lumia 920. If any one could advise with this issue I would appreciated....The problem still unsolved...Bye Nokia

Sounds like a problem with your proximity sensor, simple fix if you bring your phone to a Nokia repair centre

My wife's android phone has the same problem as your Nokia phone. So Android phone may not be better. Just your luck because my Android phone has no such problem. Her phone's OS is even newer than mine.

I've been waiting for ages for this update to finally arrive for my device. Not a chance, although from what I've read there are a lot of devices receiving the update worldwide. Now this, it was already available just for some devices only and they have managed to suspend even that. Really getting frustrated with this but love my Lumia 800 just too much to put it down. Hopefully that update message may still come one day on my phone screen :(
PS: not going to download it myself and reset the device, I've got too many things/apps on it and am not in the mood to re-install absolutely everything plus I don't want to risk breaking anything.

Well, I updated my Sprint HTC ARRIVE recently using the seveneighter tool/app developed by windowsphonehacker.

It was easy to do and has worked perfectly so far.

Don't bother.
I tried to upgrade to 7.8 - phone shut down, Vodafone won't even Loan me a phone.
Went to local NOKIA service centre, they tried for a day to revive my Lumia 800 - but then gave up & sent away! So although they say this is a rare problem, they hadn't any loan phone's either as they were all out?
I pay £40/month for a business Lease phone, if I don't pay they cut me off, if they can't give me a phone, they still charge?
Think I might be looking for another provider.
