We've been playing with Apple's brand new Mac OSX Tiger like frenzied Ritalin kids. Released last week, this was one of the most eagerly awaited products of 2005 and here at Crave we're beginning to understand why. Our verdict so far? Fast. Powerful. Gorgeous. Seriously.
Underpinned by UNIX, there was no shortage of power-user credibility in previous releases, but with Tiger Apple have introduced Spotlight (a new search tool), Automator (a task scheduler) and, our favourite new toy, Dashboard.
Dashboard is a series of customisable desktop widgets that fly onto your screen and perform a range of tasks. For starters there's a dictionary, foreign language translator and stock ticker. We added more weird and wonderful widgets by visiting Apple's Web site.
What first seemed a novelty quickly becomes essential, as you realise you can rapidly complete tasks that would have required visits to multiple Web sites and many applications. We've installed Tiger on a work machine that we use all day long -- we'll let you know how it performs over the coming weeks. -CS
