New Resident Evil game and Streets of Rage 2 fight their way onto the iPhone

Attention, iPhone gamers! Two titles have been released today that we think are worthy of your attention -- Resident Evil Mercenaries VS and Streets of Rage 2, from Capcom and Sega respectively.

The new Resident Evil game is particularly interesting -- it's billed as Capcom's 'first online game' for iOS. That means online death matches against your chums, as well as the usual zombie splattering. You can play as characters from the Resident Evil series, including Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker.

The game sees you running around docks, forts and castles, using shotguns, hand grenades and sub-machine guns to make other players dead. You can choose between team matches and free-for-alls.

For now, the game is only available for the iPhone, although we're hoping a rezzed-up iPad version will follow soon. Capcom is selling Resident Evil Mercenaries VS for the reduced price of £1.79 for a limited time, so, if you're a fan of all things lurching and undead, you might want to buy it sharpish.

Streets of Rage 2 is a retro remake, bringing Sega's original horizontally scrolling beat 'em up to the iPhone. It also costs £1.79.

You can play as one of four characters -- Skate, Axel, Blaze and Max -- duffing up a host of 2D enemies with a mixture of fists, lead pipes, knives, grenades and, er, golf clubs. That's not approved of on the Augusta National course, although it would have livened up the TV coverage of the recent Masters tournament no end.

Sega's iOS update is a faithful conversion of the original game, complete with on-screen d-pad and buttons. You can, however, now play with friends using Bluetooth, which is a welcome bonus. You can even use a not-so-secret language-changing feature to play the original Japanese version of the game, Bare Knuckle II.
