Microsoft security updates causing 'black screen of death'?

According to our US cousins at CNET News, Microsoft is investigating claims that its latest security updates are causing Windows PCs to suffer the so-called 'black screen of death'. "After logging on, there is no desktop, task bar, system tray or sidebar. Instead, you are left with a totally black screen and a single My Computer Explorer window," said security firm Prevx.
