Google Maps for iOS arrives with Street View, public transport

iPhone owners are finally free of Apple's terrible built-in Maps app, thanks to Google's long-awaited iOS Maps software finally making its way onto the App Store.

The app is available to download now, and brings all modern comforts to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch customers, including public transport and a compass-controlled street view that lets you scroll by waving your mobile around.

It's early days, but my first impressions of the new app are positive. The ability to search public transport from the app is crucial, and even alerted me to some nasty delays on London's central line.

Satellite information looks good, and the app itself is fast and well presented, with an attractive minimalist look and on-screen controls that will be familiar to any long-time iPhone owners. It's certainly much better than using Google's web-based maps service in a browser.

The only issue is that links to maps on websites or within other apps will likely still open Apple's Maps app, as there's no way to tell iOS which app you'd like to use by default.

Apple controversially did away with Google's excellent mapping data, instead building its own app using TomTom data. The move was a bold one that had many intrigued, but when Apple's effort turned out to be less useful than a canoe made of Ryvita, iPhone owners clamoured for the big G to make a glorious return.

The cartographical crisis at Apple HQ has seen boss Tim Cook offer a public apology, and several key employees shown the door.

Have you used the new app? What do you think of it? Tell me in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

I haven't tried this App yet but I will be getting my copy from the app store today - Google are the Maps professionals and I have no doubt this App is a winner.

Thank God for that! I've just downloaded it on my iPad 2. Am I right in that there is only a iPhone version and not one for the iPad? I notice youtube is also available.

It's a bit grainy and no diagonal view when you are close in as the PC website has now robbed from bing maps.

The iPad version will be following later. This is the version for the iPhone.

Google have stepped up to the plate here and produced a better version of Google Maps on iOS than the Android version of Google Maps.
They will eventually incorporate the changes made here in the Android version, but it will need a complete redesign of the Android app before that can happen.

Previously Google refused to update the iOS version of their Map app to include features like turn-by-turn navigation.
They kept all the later goodies for Android only.
That's the main reason why Apple decided to go their own way on Maps.

Strange that once Apple cut them adrift, Google have released what is being called the best Maps app to date on a mobile device, even bettering the version for Android.
With half their mobile revenue coming from iOS users, it's clear that Google can't afford to lose them.

Wasn't the maps app prior to iOS 5 by Apple, but using data licensed from Google?

If that's the case then Google never actually had an iOS map app until now. And I think it was the same situation with YouTube.

"Wasn't the maps app prior to iOS 5 by Apple, but using data licensed from Google?"

I believe it was a Google app, but supplied pre-installed.
I may be wrong, but I think it may have ran like a pseudo native app, but there may be developers who can clarify that.

Glad I am not the only who is thinking that Google's apps look better on iOS than on Android. The GMAIL app has a really nice minimalist look on iOS and it uses this 'card' feature to distinguish different e-mails. Now it looks iOS GOOGLE-MAPS looks nicer than the Android equivalent. I hope they port over the design to Android.

Nearly right, but not what the story actually was - Google were willing for iOS to contain Googles turn by turn navigation but Apple did not want it to be branded with Google also Apple did not want to have Latitude bundled in either. That is where the stalemate happened. Eventually Apple decided to do it their own way rather than give credit where credit is due.... Genius!

Anyone know when ipad version will be made available, all I have read so far is "ipad app to come later"

As an Android user I would hate to have the same UI for Maps as the iOS version. It's light and extremely simple. I prefer darker and with more options!

Therefore I really hope Google do not port over the iOS version onto Android.

I've read a bit about this across the 'net today.
Google say that there are more features yet to come on this iOS app, such as offline mode; so it's not finished yet.
Also an iPad optimised version will also be coming.
They say it's the new version of Google Maps and iOS gets it first. The Android version will follow later.

this is just ridiculous, that google gonna give new version of maps to iOS faster then android ;/ WTF google ? i just swap my IP4s for Nexus 4 because I want pure android experience and full support of google apps like maps what i using a lot. I should stay with IP4s

I did the same thing, and I admit that what Google is planning is not right imo. first android then ios, or same date release.

I wonder how much would people have paid for a licensed version of Google maps on iOS. I would laugh and laugh if they would start charging Apple for the free android versions of their apps.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 December, 2012 00:21

@Meleagru 13 December, 2012 23:46

Google won't charge iOS users because they earn more than half of their mobile revenue from iOS usage.
Google need iOS, because they currently make more money from it than from their own OS, Android.

It's still using 6 year old satellite images.

Atleast Apple maps has far newer images/

Oh well… Apple took it a bit too far when they thought they could keep the project in house, become independent from Google and still do well! In fact not just well but beat the competition on a field where G maps has years of experience?!?? I think that’s an excess of corporate confidence. And the truth is that there are a bunch of emerging apps out there that do a great job and yet receive not enough attention! I think these two are some good examples http://www.mevvy.com/tools/inrix-traffic/ or http://www.mevvy.com/tools/waze/in the end why fuel the giants when we all need business and specially startups???

anonymous 16 December, 2012 12:46

How can I use streetview in my google maps for iOS, please?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 18 December, 2012 17:38

I can find no evidence of Street View with this app.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 December, 2012 13:22

I don't understand why you can't drop a pin and set directions to or from it anymore. Google maps pre ios 6 you could, now it's not an option at all... All you can do is share or save your location. And if you do drop a pin somewhere and attempt to drop another, as if to set two locations without knowing the exact address for directions, routing, etc. it doesn't let you drop multiple pins anyway.

It looks like there will never be a Google Map for Ipad only Iphone. The Iphone version on the Ipad is useless. I guess Street View from Google for the Ipad is dead.
