Yes, we know you meant to buy your partner something original this year, but let's face it, nothing goes down as well on Valentine's Day as the old-fashioned bunch of flowers.

You could just pick up the phone and call your local florist, but that's so last century. Today's smart Valentine's shopper uses the Internet for such things, and to help we've done the hard work for you and tracked down the very best places to buy online.

Our favourite is easily the multicoloured flowers you can buy at Valueflora. The 'happy flowers' absorb trippy-coloured dyes as they grow in Clog-land, and will set you back £50 for a dozen.

If your partner likes their presents to be ethical, the Organic Flower Company is the one for you. It uses all the latest green buzz-words -- 'ethical', 'carbon zero' and 'naturally grown' all get a mention on the site -- and the flowers are reassuringly expensive with a large bunch of roses costing £55, although you can get a vase-full of cheaper plants for £15.

There's also the Real Flower Company, which doesn't mention the word organic anywhere on its site, but does claim to eschew typical mass-produced techniques. Prices start from £13.

If you're reading this on the big day but you've forgotten to put your order in a few days before, go to Teleflorist. Providing you order before 1pm, it will deliver your flowers the same day, sparing you an earful when you get home. Six red roses will set you back £35.

Those looking for a bargain need look no further than Bunches. It charges just £9.99 for its classic carnation -- how can you go wrong? -JJ
