CNET UK launches faster, simpler site

Good day to you, and welcome to a brand-new version of CNET UK. Today marks the high point of an enormous project to rebuild the site from the ground up. Months ago, we asked you what you thought of the site and we based all our changes on what you told us. There are hundreds of improvements, but here is a list of the main ones:

Speed

The new CNET UK will load much faster than the old one. Every page of the site has been re-written from scratch on a new platform to deliver stories to you at lightning speed. Once we've tweaked a few settings, we're confident this will be one of the fastest tech sites around.

Reviews

Following your invaluable feedback, we've pulled apart the design of the reviews section and started afresh. The most important thing you told us was you didn't like the review being spread out over multiple tabs. So with this clean, modern, wider design, we've put much more information about the product on the first page of the review. The top of each review page contains a quick rundown of both your and our views on the product, pricing, the video review (if available, photos if not) and something we're calling a Sentiment Tracker.

You wanted ways to give us more feedback, so the Sentiment Tracker allows you to let us know what you think of a product with one easy click -- the options are 'I want it', 'I own it' and 'Not for me'. The results will be on each review for everyone to see and it's going to be interesting to discover exactly which products you find exciting, useful and plain terrible.

We've massively simplified the process for writing a user review of kit you've bought, plus we've added the ability to make comments on reviews for those who feel like telling the world what they think, even if they haven't bought the product.

Each channel homepage (such as cameras, computers, mobile phones and TVs) has an easy to use product finder. This helps you find products by type, company, price or score. As you select your options, it gives you a live preview of the results on the right-hand side.

Membership

You can now see a list of all your comments on the site in our membership tools section. If you're not already a member of CNET UK, you'll need to create an account with us if you want to receive our newsletters or enter competitions. But for simple commenting, we've added the ability to log in with your Facebook account and cross-post comments or user reviews you write to your wall, should you wish.

Photo galleries

One of the most common gripes about our old Crave photo galleries was that they were spread out over multiple pages. So we've created a new system that doesn't require the page to re-load to show a new picture. Keen-eyed Cravers will also notice that there are a few subtle design changes to this section which were made to bring it in line with the rest of the site.

Forums

Many of you have used our forums to get help and advice on a range of tech issues, but you've told us you'd rather talk to us and each other using Facebook and Twitter than on a proprietary forum. So we've been building up our Facebook fan page and Twitter presence for some time, and we're now ready to make the switch for good. So if you fancy asking us or the community anything, or just have a chat, head over to one of those channels.

Radical change like this means there will be a few gremlins hanging around in the system. If you find anything amiss, please let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook wall and we'll get right on it.

These changes are just the beginning of some exciting developments to CNET UK we have planned this year. If you want to be a part of making this site better, please become a member of the CNET UK advisory panel. Just tick the box for this when you register, or go to the 'account details' part of the member services and tick the box towards the bottom of the page.

We hope you like the new site. Please explore and let us know what you think.

It really is VERY speedy. This is excellent news for impatient people, like me.

A great little surprise this morning. Thank you and well done CNET team. Very quick page load and a cleaner, less busy page layout. LIKE IT.

much MUCH better - and faster! Love the reviews layout, photo viewer is great. Now you just need more photos. Gives your competitors something to aim for.

I just have one tiny little complaint - when browsing the site using Opera Mini and my Nokia e63 (which is now a painless experience, i'd add) the "add your comment" box has partially cut off the word "comment". Not that it bothers me really, but I thought you ought to know anyway.

Hi - Great changes to the site

I have spotted a glitch though in the reviews. I was looking at the iPad review and it says the average user review is 5 Stars, when looking at the user reiews they are all between 2 and 4 stars, none at 5 star. It doesn't seem to be working out the average properly.

Just thought i'd let you know...

@AlexMck - thanks, we'll take a look at it for you, although that one might take a while to resolve

@ anonymous 11.55 - Our RSS feeds have changed. The old ones should redirect, but if you have problems, the easiest thing to do is to resubscribe to the new ones while we're sorting things out. You can find the full list here: http://www.cnet.co.uk/rss/

@anonymous 12.20 - Thanks for spotting that, we'll get our tech team to fix that up.

Hooray!

An honourable way of getting out of the horrid mess created by giving a defective product a 9.4 rating! Credibility restored!

Plus the site is pretty awesome now.

@anonymous 13.28. We could tell you, but we'd have to kill you

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 July, 2010 15:46

Your page is great, it's faster and cleaner. I just don't like the rating system. It's like seeing the american site of CNET. The 1.0 to 10.0 system is more precise than the 5 star system.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 July, 2010 16:05

@Fernando Miguel Chinchilla Paiz - thanks for your feedback. In our research, users told us that they found the star rating system easier to understand that the previous one, but we appreciate that the shift won't please everybody. We're hoping the fact that it's actually a 10-star system (we give half stars) will mitigate against this and that people will still be able to get a sense of the smaller differences between products by reading the review.

I LOVE it, but I'm really sad about the forums dying. I had a feeling it was going to happen though when the number of spam posts to actual posts ratio was about 3:1.

I like how the review section got revamped and that you used the views of users to alter it. Good work!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 July, 2010 16:46

@weetanhops - Glad you like the reviews re-design. We're sad to see the forums go too, but hope you'll find what we have on our Facebook page ( http://www.facebook.com/cnetukofficial ) even better. If not, let us know what you'd like us to improve there and we'll try our best!

Wow, blimey, it is blazing fast for the most part. A few clicks here and there have taken longer to load, but it's now as fast as Chrome/FF4 can load the page. Great work guys.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 July, 2010 17:45

@samuelgibbs - That's good to know. We're still optimising the speed of the site, so you should see the pages that take longer to loads speed up over the next few days.

please bring back review scores such as 9.4 and 9.2 etc... rather than this half a star and full star rubbish, it was a good way of differentiating between products that are of quite similar spec and quality

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 20 July, 2010 18:43

nothing between a 9.2 and a 9.4. Half points are fine. I prefer the star system, good on yer Cnet

Anonymous 20 July, 2010 20:11

@anonymous 12.20 - they fixed it - now shows a 3 star score for the ipad.Mwa mwa mwowowowowowowow

sorry, got to point out a gripe about the new layout. I personally liked the editors favourites / top choice section in the sidebar and the ratings out of 10. Now, when browsing the review, in Cameras as an example I choose Compact Cameras, 5 stars as a filter and the camera top of the list has only four stars, am i doing something wrong. Please show an easy comparison or ranking

Anonymous 22 July, 2010 15:58

like any launch, looks like a couple of bugs still to iron out. But a nice treatment of reviews.

For the geeks amongst us (which must be a fair number of your readership) can you share what platform is behind your new web pages?

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 23 July, 2010 10:00

Great, you have finally fixed your search box so it works in Opera, but you have broken simple Previous and Next links at http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gadgets/cnet-uk-tech-investigations-how-to-look-at-the-back-of-your-own-head-50000050/ nice job, no wonder you report so low Opera usage on your site when you force people to visit you in other browsers just to do simple things.

I can't even submit this comment in Opera due to your Submit button having the same problem!

I don't mean to have a go at you, but come on!

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 23 July, 2010 16:58

platform is proprietary :-)

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 July, 2010 15:16

@anonymous 21 July, 2010 23:26: That's a bug we're working hard to fix. It'll work the way you want very soon.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 28 July, 2010 13:23

So where can this new site be found as searching for cnetuk only brings up the old site? Or is that the new site?

dobo02's avatar

dobo02 29 July, 2010 20:31

The new site may be faster than the old and in many place very well improved, but when it comes to the download side of the site I think you have ruined it completely you have taken away the filter options for os's, and the difference between free and free to try and so on not to mention over complicating the whole page. Take the advice and return some of the original features that everyone liked very much.

i'm a frequest visitor and the site has been useful at many occassions but one thing i feel that need improvement. when i look at images in a slide view the page is not alligned to the browser (firefox) and i've to scroll down to view every image which is really annoying. so i'd recommend the page to be alligned so that it'll fit in the browser so that i dont have to scroll down. thanks
