Apple brings back app gift giving in time for Christmas

If you're stuck for what to get a loved one this Christmas, why not give them an app? You now have the option at least, as Apple has brought back the feature that lets you give iOS apps as gifts, just in time for the festive season, 9to5Mac reports.

"Hang on," you might be thinking, "I thought you could already do that." Well yes and no. The feature was part of iOS 5, but Apple dropped it for iOS 6. It's now been reinstated on the App Store, so you don't need to update any software or do anything other than head to Apple's app emporium on your iOS device or computer.

Here's how to do it. On an iOS device, just select the paid app you'd like to give, click the 'Share' button in the top right, and a gift icon will appear. Tap it, and enter your Apple ID password when prompted. It may also ask you to confirm how you'll be paying. Then put in your recipient's email address, and type a message, if you want to add a personal touch.

They don't have to receive the app that day, as you can choose the date you'd like it to appear, so you can prep a treat for Christmas morning. You can even gift wrap it. Well, add a colour scheme, which is close as you can get for something that only exists on your phone, I suppose. Hit 'Buy Gift', and that's it.

It's just as simple on a computer. Find your app on iTunes, and enter the drop-down menu next to the Buy option. Choose 'Gift this app' and enter your details. Then rub your hands in glee at having done all your Christmas shopping without leaving the house, or even having to wait for any packages to turn up so you can wrap them.

Would you like to see a similar option on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry? Will you be giving anyone an app this Christmas? What's on your wish list? Let me know in the comments, or over on Facebook.
