Apple pushes out major update to OS X

Just weeks prior to Apple's next OS X revision -- Snow Leopard -- goes on sale, the company has dropped a major update to the existing version, Leopard. It's a 165MB download and addresses a number of issues.

We've downloaded and patched our Mac and can report no concerns, at least during the first few hours of use. It brings Leopard to OS X version 10.5.8. Chief among updates is a revision to Safari 4, bringing it up to version 4.0.2, bringing better accuracy for full-history search.

Compatibility with certain types of USB hard drives has also been improved, the reliability of connections over AirPort and Bluetooth has been raised, and problems concerning how OS X handles certain raw image files and other photo-related issues have been addressed.

And of course there's a batch of security fixes. These concern bugs with bzip2, the OS X Dock, MobileMe, elements of networking and more.

Get the update by choosing the Software Update function in the OS X menu, or by heading over to Apple's Web site. If you have any problems, let us know in the comments.
