BBC iPlayer to go HD this month

Software

The BBC's excellent iPlayer service will be getting a dedicated high-definition channel in the next month, according to comments reported this morning by Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision.

The remarks were made during a during a panel discussion on 'coping strategies and winning strategies for traditional media' and quickly tweeted by attendees at today's FT Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference. The BBC has promised Crave a big announcement shortly, with more detail on how the HD iPlayer will work.

In the meantime, you can see what people are saying about the conference by using Twitter's new search box to follow #ftmedia for more breaking news. Other interesting reports include Bennett's suggestion that partnerships with other content providers and media outlets, including Channel 4 and the BFI, could be the way forward for the BBC.

We love iPlayer, and we love HD, so we're excited about this news. We'll bring you all the specifics when the new channel is launched.
