Final Cut Pro 5: the cutting edge

Final Cut Pro had a hand in creating almost every fringe movie going in the last few years. Tarnation was cut using its younger brother, iMovie -- which should give you some idea of exactly how powerful the older sibling is. This software quite literally is everything you need to edit and master a feature film.

Version 5 adds multi-camera editing in real time -- you can shuffle between simultaneous clips like a DJ flitting between records. This is similar to the way control rooms in TV stations work. Live edits can be made to your footage during playback -- a natural and potentially very fast way of editing footage.

There's also better support for high-definition, including some tweaking of the real-time effects rendering engine. Accompanying this new version of Final Cut, Apple have also released new editions of the video-graphics software Motion, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro.

We've been using the previous version of Final Cut Pro to edit some footage for a feature we'll be running -- it's seriously slick software. If you're looking for a suite to edit your Cannes entry for this year, look no further. -CS
