Polaroid PoGo: Instant photo prints on the bounce

Hey kids: stop watching Hollyoaks for a second and come and look at this! Yes, we know Max has died, but this is way more interesting. It's the Polaroid PoGo Instant Mobile Printer! What is it? It's only a portable photo printer that doesn't use any bloomin' ink!

If that sounds familiar, it's because the PoGo was one of the coolest gadgets at CES 2008, despite then labouring under the name Polaroid Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer. Fortunately the maketing wonks have been earning their Jaffa Cakes by coming up with the PoGo moniker.

The PoGo is based on Zink technology. That means 'zero ink', which means 50x75mm borderless colour prints are baked on to special paper by magic crystals. These business card-size images are touch-dry in under a minute. A USB cable connects to your digital camera. Or, and this should grab your attention kids, you can pair the PoGo with your phone via Bluetooth and print away wirelessly.

It's nearly a year since we first encountered Zink, where the technology was intended to be part of an actual camera. Still no sign of that particular innovation, but we're sure it's just a matter of time. Polaroid clearly sees this technology as the successor to the instant photography that made the company famous.

The PoGo is now on sale in the UK for £99.99. The paper will set you back £2.99 for a packet of ten, or £6.99 for 30, and the PoGo comes with ten prints, so you can start PoGoing straight out of the box. -Rich Trenholm
