Kodak EasyShare 5300: Cheap ink ahoy
Tags: kodak, crave, printers, colour
Last week we were invited to attend a rather secretive Kodak briefing in Soho, where the company unveiled a range of magical-sounding new printers. The EasyShare All-In-One range promises not only to deliver high-quality text and photo quality, but also to cut the price of ink in half.
What follows is an excerpt of the conversation that went down between Crave and Kodak's marketing guys*:
Crave: "WTF? A printer that's good and cheap to run?"
Kodak: "Yes -- and for the first time printer ink is no longer as expensive as champagne.
Crave: "ROFL. Prove it"
Kodak: "Fine. As long as we don't have to carry on using IM slang"
Crave: "NP"
The Kodak guys then proceeded to demonstrate the EasyShare 5300 all-in-one -- blowing our tiny little minds in the process. The thing produced a series of absolutely gorgeous 150x100mm (6x4-inch) photos, each of which took about 28 seconds to complete -- that's about half a minute quicker than many dedicated photo printers. Each of the prints was dry by the time it hit the dedicated photo output tray.
EasyShare Black cartridges cost a measly £6.99 and have a 351-page yield, while colour cartridges cost £9.99 and have a 105-page yield. When printing colour 150x100mm photos, this works out as low as 7p per page. And no, that's not at some unusable "draft" setting -- Kodak says there is no draft setting.
There's no official UK pricing on the EasyShare 5300 but Kodak has confirmed it'll retail for $200 (£102) in the US, so hopefully we'll get it for slightly less. If that seems like a lot, just think of the ink money you'll save over the course of a couple of years. It's a no-brainer.
Kodak, we salute you. EasyShare is teh sex. -RR

The image shown is the Easyshare 5500 ($299.99 in US), which has a sheet feeder.

I agree that it cost the customer money. I have gone throught so many cartridges because one color ran out. It is such a waste. Give me a cartridge for each color any day. I am just about ready to go back to Epson.

Kodak claims a 50% savings on ink. Compared to what? Kodak's reported cost per page in black is 2.7 cents. Comparing that to HP's reported cost per page on the 02 black for the PS5180, 2.9 cents per page, hardly a 50% savings. And now for the color- HP (and Epson and Canon for that matter) use individual cartridges to save the customer money when they run out of ONE color. If you run out of one color on the Kodak, you must throw the entire color cartridge away wasting ink/money. Plus it prints faded looking photos.

The Kodak 5300 will not print off labels or envelopes without jamming up. The machine keeps telling me that I have incorrectly loaded the paper tray with paper wrong side up, and it takes forever to spool up. E mails to Kodak are ignored. The comments about the prints looking faded are correct. Trying to get the thing to scan would try the patience of a saint. Would I buy another one. No Way.

I think the 'cheap ink' selling point is a bit of a scam. These inks seem to run out in no time, and I don't even print photos. The fact that it refuses to print ANYTHING once one ink cartridge is exhausted is absolutely maddening, and left me high and dry when I had an important piece of work to print, for which I only needed black and white (and had an almost-full cartridge). I wouldn't have bought this had I known, and would advise others to look elsewhere.

I still think kodak is great. To me the price is good for the quality. I'm sticking with kodak.

Has anyone found a way to get around the "wrong side up" message?
I am at a standstill at the moment because I need business cards printed - did a jam up job when I first printed them on double sided business cards from Office depot. Now the thing is continuing to tell me the wrong side is up.
I am quickly becoming dissatisfied with this printer 5500 Kodak. To begin with it had nice crisp black print but is deteriorating no matter how many times I clean the ink head, change cartridges or calibrate

Wrote earlier today about problem with the "wrong side up" message. after several correspondence from Kodak, the person in Tech support gave me the clue.
To calibrate for new paper, put your paper into the tray that you are having trouble with. One sheet only. press copy and cancel at the same time. The paper feeds through and when I did it, TAAA DAAAA!!! I was then able to print my business cards. Still working on resolving the less than best black print to get the crisp black print that I had in the past on the cards.

the printer didn't finish one 6x4 photo when the pc told me out of ink.
then after replacing ink it then told me, print head installed wrong or loose.
so this will be the second 5300 i will be taking back, and not replacing.
the ink is not cheap as one colour runs out. you have too replace the whole cartridge.
i would not recommend this printer, to many bits that can go wrong.
And will

Lovely. The image shown is of a unit that clearly has a sheet feeder yet there's no such thing on the Kodak website. I've been trying to find a half decent auto-feed scanner for standard printed photographs without much success and thought this might have been a solution... ho-hum...
Anyone?
