Crave Podcast 96: Microsoft punks Vista haters

Crave Podcast 96: Microsoft punks Vista haters

CNET UK Podcast

It's podcast Friday, y'all! Rory Reid returns to the helm after a two week hiatus, to join Nate Lanxon, Kate Macefield and Richard Trenholm for the 96th episode.

As ever, we discuss the hottest news of the week, which includes word that Dell may launch another MP3 player with accompanying music and video download service. Then, ex-Google staff attempt to upstage their former employer by making Cuil -- a search engine of their own. Foolhardy? You be the judge.

You can also be the judge of whether user-generated content is destroying the Internet. Fans are trying to make The Dark Knight the highest rated movie on IMDB, by deliberately casting negative votes for the previous number one, The Godfather. Have they no soul? It's a man in a flying rat suit with zero super powers, for goodness sake! Don Corleone must be turning in his grave.

Next, we report on Microsoft's Mojave experiment, which fooled ordinary folks into loving Windows Vista. Then, we have a heated discussion about the British hacker who breached NASA and US military security a few years ago. Gary McKinnon has just lost his appeal against being extradited to stand trial in the US. If the US prosecution gets its way, he'll be avoiding picking up the soap for the rest of his life.

In our Year in Tech feature this week, we take a look at 1996 -- the year Google was launched, the Java programming language was released, and Deep Blue defeated chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov. Oh, and it's when 2Pac died, as well.

As always, we end the show with the WTF segment. This episode, it's about the UK government, which has banned 18-rated games from prison. Some are saying it's making prisoners more violent, but bizarrely, PlayStations are still being given to prisoners on suicide watch. Huh?
