Dell E207WFP: £155 20-inch monitor shocker
Tags: dell, press, inch, press release
Someone at Dell has made a terrible, terrible mistake. We're not sure whether it's the marketing folks, the work experience boy or pesky hackers, but we've just seen an official press release listing a new 20.1-inch widescreen monitor for $289 (£155 -- WTF?).
At that price, you'd think the E207WFP was made of old pencil shavings, but it's actually pretty good -- according to the specifications we've been given. It has a 5ms response time, runs at a native resolution of 1,680x1,050 pixels and has an HDMI connector with HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content) protection, so it's ready to play forthcoming copy-protected video. And it costs £155.
Dell's press release says it's aimed at gamers and video- and photo-editing enthusiasts (that's pretty much everybody), and we'd have to say that on face value it has absolutely no competition. You'd be an absolute idiot to buy anything else in the 17-20-inch segment.
Despite the press release saying the E207WFP is "available immediately worldwide", our geezer at Dell says you'll probably have to wait a "couple of weeks" before it hits the UK. He then went on to suggest we buy the Dell Ultrasharp 2007WF 20-inch instead, as it's on special offer for £311. Not likely, mate.
We'll bring you a full review of the E207WFP when we get one. -RR

Ah.. the benefits of globalisation. Dell: don't you understand what a pound is worth?
1 British pound = 1.9019 U.S. dollars according to google, today.
You can't even order it from Dell in the US and have it shipped over to the UK.

I been playing with the new Dell E207WFP and my first impression is this thing has a serious backlight issue. Most all 6-bit TN monitors suffer from moderate bleeding with dark backgrounds, but this monitor bleeds with just about any mid dark background. Dell needs to have whoever is manufacturing this thing to get their act together. Color banding was noticable. Only thing this monitor will be useful for is gaming under bright high contrast conditions. Any other uses you will be wasting your money.

I've had my E207 for a week now and can give a pretty good review of it.
PROS: I did not find and banding like the above poster reports, though I have not tried it in DVI mode. I find images above average, clear and sharp. Text was crisp and sharp as well. Movies looked fantastic. I don't play games so cannot give a opinion on that. Also notewhorty to mention blacks and whites look really black and white, which is outstanding for any LCD. Very smooth rendering of faint/mixed color tones.
CONS: As reported above and elsewhere the monitor does have significant backlight uniformity issues. What I found annoying as hell is half of the lower screen is bright and high contrast while the upper half is darker and lower contrast. Anyone who uses this for office appications will get frustrated with two level britness application in front of them.
I also find that Dell overstates the horizonal viewing angle. I would put it more accuratly at around 140 degress.
I think once Dell fixes the screen backlight uniformity this monitor will deserve a rating of 8. It is a very good monitor and a shame the backlight issue has to degrade it :(

With the price of £155 for 20-inch LCD monitor ... what are you waiting for?

Yes the Monitor is excellent, but, I mostly work in Photoshop and my images are stretched!! Perhaps I should have bought a 4:3 model, but I thought that I could run in 16:9 and swap to 4:3 when necessary. Well, yes I can but having spent ages figuring out how the menu works, because Dell did not issue any instructions on using the menu, I find that every time I power down and back on again I revert to 16:9. There does not seem to be any way to make 4:3 my default. I tried the lock in the menu but it doesn`t seem to do anything. Does anyone know how to stay in default? Harry.

Harry, would you care to share how to get this monitor into 4:3 mode please? I have the 22" version but I'm hoping the menu structure is the same.
Many thanks,
Jim.
