Why I don't want an iPhone any more

CNET Opinion

I can barely remember a time before smart phones. How did I know where I was supposed to be -- and when? How did I tweet? When the iPhone 3G came along, with its elegant software and giant screen and the Internet in it, it was like going from black and white to colour, like when Dorothy crashlands in Oz. Ding dong, the WAP is dead.

I loved the iPhone. It was pretty, it was fun, it did everything I wanted it to. Which makes it all the more weird that just a few short years later, I wouldn't be seen dead with one.

The original iPhone was revolutionary. That's just a fact. (This is the point where some early adopters start banging on about the Nokia N95 having the Internet and apps, but that's like comparing a steam engine to an Aston Martin because they both have wheels.)

Android came shortly after, and the new narrative was established for the mobile story: Apple's refined but restricted walled garden versus Android's liberated but chaotic hippy dreamland. I'm not going to argue that one is better than the other. I've lived with both and loved both -- but always with something missing, something that can only be found in the other.

The iPhone and iPad get the apps first, in classy and refined hardware. But Android puts you in charge of every aspect of your phone, with a far wider choice of blowers. If only there was some middle ground...

With the Nokia Lumia 800 and Windows Phone, I reckon there is.

Wait, what just happened?

When the new world order of iPhones and Androids began, the old lags were caught flat-footed and left dazed for years. Nokia, BlackBerry and Sony Ericsson found themselves staring at Apple, Google, Samsung and HTC (who came from nowhere) and wondering what the chuff just happened. Microsoft too.

Microsoft at least had the nous to start afresh, chucking out the rubbish Windows Mobile and going back to the drawing board. On that drawing board some touchy-feely type drew some big squares, and the best mobile phone interface ever was born.

Interface is king

Yes, there are many aspects to an operating system. The app ecosystem. The extent to which it can be customised. The integration with the hardware.

But ultimately, the interface is the most important thing about a mobile phone. Everybody has a phone nowadays, so it has to be easy to use even if you don't know your app store from your elbow. We use them all the time, usually for very small tasks, so they have to be usable with one hand and one eye without breaking off from a conversation. We have to be able to dip into them while barely engaging our brains.

Processor speeds, screen sizes, app stores; all those things are important, but they mean nothing if the software fails to harness those smarts to an interface that's enjoyable to use. You could have the world's cleverest octo-core, eleventy-megapixel, high-definizzle phone in your pocket, but if the interface is a chore to grapple with then you're going to leave it there.

This may be news to some of the tech-frenzied readers who go ballistic at us in the comments whenever we emphasise interface -- hi guys! luv ya! -- but not everybody wants to feel like they're doing a maths exam every time they make a phone call, look up a film time or download an app. Interface is king.

Sure, we tech-savvy early adopters like a challenge, but mobile phones are no longer the domain of nerds like us who want a gadget to be complicated, so we can feel like we've mastered it. Mobile phones belong to our mums and dads now, our nieces and nephews, our ditzy co-workers who don't even read XKCD. The chumps.

My dad loves cars, but he wouldn't want to drive even the most souped-up supercar if it had a Rubiks Cube instead of a steering wheel and you had to line up all the greens to turn left. No sir: Interface. Is. King.

The king is dead

Until not so long ago, that meant Apple. But something insane has happened. Something that we simply wouldn't have countenanced just three short years ago.

One company makes a beautiful, intuitive, elegant interface, and the other makes a dated, clunky interface. But now it's Microsoft showing off the thing of beauty, and Apple that's behind the times. Microsoft is the underdog and Apple is the monolithic, restrictive monopoly. Has the world gone mad?

Sure, the iPhone and iPad interface is still slick and simple. But the shine is gone -- iOS 5 looks almost exactly the same as iOS 4. Android showed what you can do when you can truly customise the look and feel of your phone, with its flexible home screens, handy widgets placing information right at your fingertips, and the capacity to alter any feature you like.

Long live the king

Windows Phone strikes the perfect middle ground between the two. The slick, instantly recognisable and totally intuitive live tile interface is playful without being toylike, knocking Apple's once-revolutionary front end into a cocked hat. And on the other hand, widgets and dynamic live tiles give you the flexibility that marks Android.

It's utterly compelling, and that's why I won't be swapping my Nokia Lumia 800 for an iPhone any time soon.

Nope, Apple will have to do more than nick Android's notification system to tempt me back to that dated interface. No widgets? Pssh. Delving into the menus for simple tasks like killing the Wi-Fi? Whatevs. iTunes? See ya, most definitively would not wanna be ya.

Of course, I'm not saying Windows Phone is perfect. The pool of apps is more like a muddy puddle. It's only the arrival of Spotify in the Marketplace that has triggered this damascene conversion in your humble correspondent, as that's the first app I download on any new phone. And I still haven't got used to how when you zoom right in to a map it switches to satellite view.

But I love it how the directions tell you if you reach a certain road, you've gone too far. I love how if there's a problem with a text message, the smiley face messages icon turns to a frowny face. And I bloomin' love those big colourful tiles. Because, lest we forget, when you look at a gadget a hundred times a day it should make you smile every time, not want to kick it against a wall (the fate of my last iPhone).

My God. We're through the looking glass here, people. I'm a Windows fan now.

Nice article, and completely agree with the windows phone interface really deserving major success. But you might want to have a word with the peeps who do your phone reviews...the list over here (--->) tells me that the Lumia 800 places 5th behind the iphone, sensation, galaxy etc.

all 3 operating systems are good, it depends on whats for you. iOS 5, ice-cream sandwich, and windows they all depend on each other for innovation. apple will come up with a great idea and windows and android will copy it and the other way around etc etc. do not angry at this guy for liking windows instead of apple because we all like one more than the other. we should be thankful we all like different things and it drives the opponent companies. so we should thank people who hate your preferred operating system because it is them who drive the opponent companies.

if we 14 year old boys can realise this, surely you can to

so go out there shake hands with an iPhone user, an android user and a windows user for it is them who gave you iOS 5, ice cream sandwich and windows. the world is built on ideas but it takes the smart ones to help them grow.

thank-you

I don't find your arguments compelling.

Yes, the IPhone interface looks dated but hen those of us who were a little more objective have found it ugly and dated for some time.

I agree that Interface is King or at least in the Royal Family but the Windows Interface is a silly, scroll-fest, ugly mess.

If interface s King, surely we are talking about FUNCTION not just a superficial infatuation with appearance.

For me, Android and the HTC version in particular does it for me.

I find the Windows one offensive.

And it doesn't function anything like as well as my Android one.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 November, 2011 18:46

How much did Microsoft pay you to write this? I can't disagree more with your premise that the interface is king, the apps are king. I have owned previous Windows Mobile phones (I know it apples to steaks compared to the new OS) and I currently own the iPhone4 and the Motorola Xoom tablet. The iPhone wins hands down because of the apps in the app store even though I like the interface on the Xoom (Android 3.2) much better. Interface is important but not nearly as much as the quality and variety of the available apps and right now Windows Mobile is an utter fail.

Plus I am not going to take seriously a review done by some one who is obviously unstable "kick it against a wall (the fate of my last iPhone)".

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 November, 2011 18:53

Not the most balanced of articles. The reviewer is board of the same operating system not the IOS. I have wp7 and before mango it was a joke. Now its just OK, I have a Desire HD and Android is more versatile but I have had it for a while and I would like a change it does not mean Android is dead. IOS is moving into real voice control which makes the interface your voice. The battle will be the ability recognise voice commands effectively and when Iphone 5 comes out you will not be able to resist, then you will be using your Nokia as a door stop.

I have a Droid (un)Incredible and I can't wait to dump it for a Samsung Focus S. When I picked up the Samsung I was amazed at how smoot and intuitive the interface was, soooo much easier to use than the Droid. My guess is people dissing WP7 haven't used or touched WP7 but are dogging it just because it is MS. The Droid has got to be the mose over rated phone I have ever used, what a doggy POS.

Why did I not mention iPhone? I simply haven't used it as I have no desire for the product, Siri might be kind of cool but the same technology could be ported to the other phone OSs and then it wouldn't be just for the smug Apple users.

Yes Apple's iOS is behind the times, yes the hardware is not quite there, (*cough* NFC, bigger screen, better front camera *cough*), but jailbreaking can bring you the things you desire from Android, the widgets, the better settings UX, etc. While leaving you inside the Apple ecosystem, where no doubt you've spent $$$ on apps and music, etc. iOS5 means iTunes is much much much less important. And this is coming from someone who hasn't jailbroken.

iOS 5 brought just two big things, iCloud and cutting the umbilical cord to the PC/Mac. Everything else included was an extra, including the notification center. Hopefully iOS 6 returns to the roots of the iPhone, where its groundbreaking, and not copying or catching up.

So jail breaking helps close the gap between iOS and Android, while retaining the tightness and minutely planned interface and generally usability, with the massive exception of the settings app. (windows 7 phone, just looks like theres way to much scrolling involved).

The only problem with jail breaking is the risk and the [admittedly small] amount of instability.

I have an HTC Trophy with Mango and my wife has Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy S) running Android. her Samsung is always locking up or stuttering. the whole thing seems to be a mish-mash disorganized jumble. my Windows phone never locks up and everything I need and use is easy to find. No there aren't 100s of thousands of apps in the store, but really, how many do you really use. Windows Mango is elegant, efficient and friendly. Don't knock it till you try it. I was going to get a phone like my wife's and now am glad I didn't.

anonymous 28 November, 2011 19:07

I was very interested in the iPhone 4 when it came out, but the price was just out of my reach. Looked over at a Windows Phone (which was turned off...), the price was right, so I insisted on a demonstration (they turned it on). Was better than I thought, nice UI, so I grabbed it.

Let me elaborate, I was happy to learn that notifications on the number of missed called, texts, emails would appear on my lock screen as well as the live tiles. In some cases, like the "Me" or "People" hub, the flip side of the live tile would let me know what's going on in facebook (aming my friends).

Little things like that make the experience that much more enjoyable.

The speed, slickness, and metro style apps is another plus!

* To be fair, I copied and pasted part of a statement i made on cnet.

Yadda yadda yadda - "If it looks similar, I don't like it anymore, I want change for change's sake." This article portrays the author as a slave to what's hip more than it portrays the iPhone as outdated.

Are the new Windows phones good? Yes. Even Apple fans like John Gruber of Daring Fireball think they're great, maybe even better then the iPhone. But that's a good thing. It's ridiculous to expect Apple to make arbitrary changes to its product based on a product that's not even for sale yet (--> as of the release of iOS 5) when so many competitors have made grand claims and turned out to be duds. Let's see if Windows is as great as it seems. Let's see if it's bug- and virus-free. If it is, then Apple will have to respond with iOS 6. And chances are, that response will be insanely great. So everyone wins!

The microsoft tellme service works quite well, you can have it find text and open apps with your voice. Yes its more command based rather than having a conversation with a smug robot. But with it you can text and drive and open things and do online searches at will. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SHoukZpMhDE Example video and that has been there since day 1.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 November, 2011 20:33

Those Windows phone tiles are hideous! Big chunky blocks that take over most of your screen. Add to that cut off text and the thing is as dog ugly as Windows 3.1. The interface forces you to constantly pan and scan to view the entire text. I don't understand how people can think this interface is wonderful at all.

CNET reaaly need to make their mind up...
First of all you call the iPhone the best phone ever, then you say it is the worst phone, then you say you are going of the iPhone.

Make your mind up, as you will confuse people.......
Every phone is different and the iPhoe will suit some, and not others. The same applies to the Nokia Lumia 800 and other smartphones.

anonymous 28 November, 2011 21:00

Seems like WP7 is very polarizing. I fall on the side of liking it, but some of the complaints against it have merit and shouldn't be downplayed. With large screens, I think Microsoft has a bit more work to do to improve the display and efficiency of tiles. But the concept is still good, and better than static icon grids. I happen to like the gradient-free design over gradient-heavy design, but I think there's a bit of room for sexing up the graphics a bit.

Love it or hate it, Windows Phone is the 3rd ecosystem. It doesn't matter right now if 50% of people definitely hate it, it only matters if 50% of people don't.

I think that there are some good points raised I can totally agree about simplicity for the mainstream. For example I introduced my sister to Android but she is not inerested in a process that takes more than two steps or is can not be remembered after the first go. I think that android is completely lost on her.

It really depends on the market and what the individual wants to do with the phone. Personally I really don't like the windows interface I even prefer IOS and I have never bought apple. At the moment I am using Android but if I could have a dream come true it would be to see memo or (meego) continued. I had a good go on the N900 and I for me I think that it is a very powerful operating system (in my opinion the best). I think there was still some work to be done on the interface and that is one of the reasons that it was not so popular with the mainstream.

palm had a wonderful interface. swiping was easy and intuitive. it died because it had no apps. I think all phones out there have a good UI, you won't make it to product launch if you don't. But once your OS gets out the apps will make / break your OS.

Learn from Palm, Microsoft. Incite developers to make apps for your OS.

Android is for the uber nerds who want complete customization, will take some risks doing it, but are proud to do so.
iOS is for my grandparents who can't handle anything other than a deadpan simple interface... go in an app, go out of an app, go in an app, go out of an app.
Windows Phone is for everyone else.

Well I never thought I'd see the day! I take it all back... well apart from the allusions to Luke's Apple fanboyism. That stays.

Anyway, the point a lot of the people here are missing is this: the iPhone is a very good phone but it's also a very, very boring phone because everyone has one. It's about as individual as, well, you guys. Sorry, but it's all just a little bit last summer.

Android on the other hand is, frankly, horrible. Yes, I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason why the biggest manufacturers of Android phones (Samsung and HTC) have to use their own UIs but it escapes me for now. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Windows Phone is ...nice. There I said it. It's not perfect but it's nice, refreshing and actually pretty cool. The Lumia says "Look at me. I'm not a slave to fashion and I'm also gorgeous. Deal with it" but in a quietly understated way. i thin it'll be my next upgrade.

The voice recognition on Windows Phone is awesome. I use it to search websites, open apps, call people and find out the weather in other cities, get directions, stock prices, etc.. It works much better than my moms Android which gets words wrong all the time. I suppose results will vary by accents, but for me it has been amazingly accurate. When I see the Siri commercials on TV I see something that I've been doing on Windows Phone for a long time.

Great to hear you like this phone, it seems that the tide has turned on Windows Phone and people are starting to realise that it really has rebooted the smartphone market. Not only that, the Nokia Lumia just looks amazing, I want one! I personally changed from an iPhone to an HTC HD7 Windows Phone about a year ago. The HTC Windows Phone is the best mobile I have ever used and is really fast, fluid and slick. Of course the iPhone was good but features like the extra function buttons at the bottom really help me fly around the Windows Phone OS. If I did not have another 12 months to go on my contract I'd instantly upgrade to the Nokia Lumia. On the upside my HTC is awesome and by the time my contract runs out there will be some even cooler Nokia devices around. Can't wait!

The People hub is really great, it's very easy to get the low down on what is going on in your social sphere and I have found I am using social media more on the Windows Phone than I did on the iPhone.

Navigation to find and open applications is also much slicker on Windows Phone OS with the jump lists feature. Of course you can use the integrated Voice Recognition to open applications, call contacts or send SMS etc and I have used all of these features on occasion.

The Microsoft Office integration is really well done and as a business user I have found it to be pretty useful. Expecially OneNote!

I've more than a few times withnessed iPhone users exhibit surprise at how much more integrated and modern the overall experience on a Windows Phone is. Based on my experience with the HTC Windows Phone I would not hesitate in recommending it as the best mobile OS in the current market. I encourage folks to keep an open mind and try it out, as this reviewer has already concluded you will not be dissapointed.

I've been a fan of Windows Mobile, above all even my desktop, since Windows CE 1.0 on my Everex in 1999. My favorites were a Casio Cassiopeia in 2000 and a Toshiba E-800 in 2004, which I owned for a few years each. With the new WM7 and HTC HD7, I had to get passed the shock of dealing with a new OS and far inferior Office Suite. I eagerly awaited the coming of Mango and my phone went from 75% like, to 98% like. All they have to do is let me Paste to the Phone Dialer and bring back screen writing recognition (trust me).
From a very happy WM7.5 owner: Welcome to Windows Mobile 7. Have fun with it!! I am.

I guess if "using" your phone is tinkering with the interface, then yeah, Interface is King. iPhone users "use" their devices and Android users "tinker and tweek" the interface. There is a huge difference here that not many bloggers can see or chose to report on.

I felt this article was very good. I have and love my iPhone 3GS. I was very much looking forward to upgrading to the new iPhone, but now find it very difficult to spend the money to get the same phone only having a better camera and Siri. I have to say that I’m quite impressed with the Samsung Nexus. I will probably wait until the next iPhone and hope the magic comes back. But in the meantime, it’s nice to hear others points of view because I completely agree. It’s not all about Apple anymore.

So what you're saying is, you have ADD. Congrats. There's a reason iOS 5 looks like iOS 4. The point of a new OS isn't to look different, it's to add new functionality that allows for more flexibility. Each OS update isn't supposed to come with a new skin for users to learn. iOS 6 will still look much like iOS 1 did. Why? Because it works! Until there's something about it that doesn't work, there probably won't' be a change!

Incidentally OS X.7 actually looks mostly similar to OS X.1. Apple rarely reinvents the wheel, they strive to do it right the first time.

just ditched my iphone4 after buying a used windows phone just to try it, it's really amazing, makes me smile everytime i use it, been using it for 3 weeks now and couldn't be happier, i still have my android phone running froyo and been playing with it for a while but windows phone is it for me, it's not the phone itself but it's the OS and the interface, really slick! isheeps and fandroids should give it a try.

It's pretty clear, the smartphone world has caught up and in some respects surpassed Apple. Apple knows this but they don't seem to care. They just look at the fact that they can barley keep up with the demand and leave things as they are. They have learned that because of what they have done in the past all they need do is stay Apple and they will own a substantial part of the market. The 4S is proof of this theory.

MS and the Android makers can not afford to do that. Android users especially get upset when there is nothing new inside and out. The real beauty of Android is that the interface is only limited by the talents of the 3rd party developers.

awesome article. all those who disagree should try a Windows Phone and see.

To the guy who likes the HTC versions of Android: you're living in the windows mobile days when you needed the manufacturer to put a layer on top of the OS to improve usability. There shouldn't be a need for that nowadays if the OS does what it suppoed to. No matter how fast the cpu an OS (e.g. Android) with HTC Sense (if that's what it's still called) will always lag. Just take a look at there latest phone the EVO3D. yeah it has pretty graphics that spin around and what now but the graphics aren't fluid and the phone lags! WP7 is fluid and just works and has no need for any further interface layers. Yes interface is king.

I gave up the Compaq iPaq for a series of blackberry's then gave that up for an iPhone 3G but the lack of a physical keyboard was a problem so I went back to Blackberry with the Torch. Ugh blackberry really lost me with that one.
so this summer I will get a new phone an it looks like I will be going back to M$

That's a great point, and exactly the place where Nokia was before the iPhone came out. I think the CEO of Nokia was quoted saying something like "We've sold that many phones since lunch" in reference to the first quarter of iPhone sales way back in the beginning. Nokia were quite the smug bunch, they seemed to have passed the torch though and are now the ones that will be innovating, along with Microsoft. This stuff runs in cycles, some longer than others. I've been waiting for facebook to make way for the 'next big thing' for some time, but it hasn't happened yet.

David, on your comment .. "Incidentally OS X.7 actually looks mostly similar to OS X.1. Apple rarely reinvents the wheel, they strive to do it right the first time." ... I agree, Apple does strive for quality, but I feel there is some arrogance and stubbornness showing through in some of their decisions. It will work for a while, as it did for Nokia, but number 1 is a hard spot to be in ... and keep.

The cool, cutting edge "Amazing Everyday" marketing campaign looks like genius. The light show in London with Deadmau5 was so spectacular it put a boring iPhone launch to shame.

The eggs and bacon guy rocks. (look him up on YouTube!).

Nokia Lumia devices appear to be topping all the major European operators sales charts.

Nokia are a great partner in the Microsoft ecosystem and are clearly leading from the front and turbocharging it. Sure the ecosystem still faces some hurdles and media scepticism but it's off to a great start. The Microsoft ecosystem now has a rocking marketing campaign, the best hardware and the best software tooling on the planet for developers to rock the future.

Apple is for Granny, Microsoft is the new counter culture underdog now.

anonymous 29 November, 2011 05:20

Finally a tech journalist who gets it. Not enough people know the difference between wP and wM. WP7 is a breeze to use with a massive ecosystem and a woken giant behind it. It IS the phone to own right now.

OMG that show in London was insane!
Coming from a developer for WP7 standpoint, Microsoft's support of the devolopers for the platform is top notch, with top notch tools etc. This is what sets it apart from the other platforms for us. Microsoft definitely has a lot of experience in this area and it appears they are using this to their advantage as they are drawing more and more developers to the ecosystem.
As for the new Nokia WP7, it is a stunning 1st entry by Nokia and I expect many more goodies from them in the months to come.

Apple - 1 phone where youll always have an upto date OS
Android - 20 phones a year, with different versions of OS's, hoping 1 will sell well.

Android is a cheap alternative to IOS, sry folks.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 06:12

The incredible thing is that Apple and MS have switched roles in the phone world. iOS is like Windows (3.1 heh) with the marketshare and the apps. Android is like Linux. And WP7 is like MacOS with low marketshare and not as many apps but an innovative interface.

Great article, but interface itself is not KING.
Usability is KING and thats interface + apps.
That is exactly why Nokia and Microsoft are mistakeful for thinking that interface will bring them glory. Both app stores' blow!!

Im not so pleased with my 4s, but nokia is not a competiotion anymore, or yet.

anonymous's avatar

I have a Windows Phone 7 that was chosen for me by my employer. I would rather use a Sidekick, had Microsoft not destroyed it. This UI isn't innovative. I can't find anything. Screens spill into each other like fat hanging over a belt. There is nothing intuitive about it.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 08:38

The only point to your rant is that Apple need to innovate, and improve their home screen interface. IOS user do want widgets even though some refuse to admit it. IOS is in dire need of a real revamp.

I got the Lumia since last week and I agree with most of the article. It IS a breath of fresh air in the way the interface works, it's reactive, works brilliantly and looks nice. What more do you want?
btw fanboys, tried opening Twitter or any other non-apple app with Siri? It works on WP7, flawlessly.

One thing about Android: I don't understand why everyone says it's complicated and 'Linux'-like. I have a Desire HD which is fantastic, never crashes, and doesn't need constant tinkering.

Open your eyes before judging. iOS is so dated... the choice of a gazillion icons to rumidge through. No, thanks. Droid isn't much better. Yes, you have the power to customise, but honesty? Apples iPhone is (almost) over! Everybody saw the reactions when the iPhone 4s was announced instead of the iPhone 5!
Most of the customers were angry and disappointed and you could also see this effect on the share price! I think it was the first time in Apple history that the share price went down after a keynote!?

Anyway, the point is, that the Windows OS is doing exactly the same that did Apple 2007 with the first iPhone....reinventing the rules of the market! The new iOS gets with every update complicated and confusing (Apple and Apple-fan-boys call it flexible) and Android knocks of it self with new Firmware updates which are announced months ago and are going to hit the actual devices apparently in the next 3-to maybe 12 months (who knows)!

Anyway, I have an iPad and my dad has an iPhone4 and the new OS reminds me of the old Symbian, where you had to search through options to get to the target....most of the time you forgot the way and you have to search again for it :D...it's fun! :D

MARK ANDERSON say's it right!

"Anyway, the point a lot of the people here are missing is this: the iPhone is a very good phone but it's also a very, very boring phone because everyone has one. It's about as individual as, well, you guys. Sorry, but it's all just a little bit last summer."

couldn't agree more Mark!

29/11/11 10:51 PM sophistication." there's no doubt.

But still I crave for the control and now my main is still the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Still I find myself wishing for that middle ground. I'm just not sure it's Microsoft to the rescue.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 15:22

lol at some of these comments. I've like my Android, but its old now and I've loved the look of WP7 since I first saw it and the Lumia 800 looks fantastic. I think MS have found that middle ground. Whether the average Joe can see this and not be absorbed by Apple's reality distortion field or Androids "cheap 'n cheerful" device cluster, is another thing. Microsoft have a bad rap thanks to the early days of Windows 9X and Windows Mobile, they've got a lot to do to rectify that. Apple, Google (via Android) and Microsoft will be the big three in mobile (phones / fondleslabs / insert other device type).

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 15:50

Android, regardless of iteration IS buggy... I have a HTC Evo, my fiance a Galaxy S and a Asus EEE Pad, all of these devices require frequent restarts, the Samsung Galaxy being the worst - freezing on various screens and stuttering on apps being commonplace. I've read comments from WP7 users saying they've owned the device for a year or more and NEVER has it frozen. For me that's pretty compelling that level of realiability. Android is just too complicated to use, comes in too many varieties and doesn't "just work" the way a $300 ($500 in the case of the Asus tablet) device should. And it is remarkable that Apple mobile OS IS pretty much the new Windows, with the static grid of icons . The experience does feel a little dated on Apple and Android. MS made a good move by sitting back and really thinking about how people use their phones, for what, and how to improve the experience and make it about the core OS instead of jumping in with a Iphone clone like Google did with an experience fundamentally built around 3rd party apps that users have to find, download, learn to use and that eat up resources. And, as has been noted even the apps we all know so well from Iphone and Android are or can be BETTER on WP7, pinning a specific place within an app to your home screen so you don't have to find the same thing you found previously is pretty powerful, as are tiles that update in real time. Pinning specific contacts so you can ignore calls from your cousins but get the calls from your wife and kids is super powerful. Android widgets don't do that, Iphone icons don't either... only Live Tiles... Looks to me like the future in mobile may very well be between Iphone and WP7 with Android eventually being the loser (most of us don't want to hack, customize and jailbreak our $300+ device any more than we want to modify the exhaust or interior on our new car, we just want it to work), Android doesn't... WP7 and IOS do.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 17:03

not a fan of the article but we do ahve to get used to it...Microsoft is coming. they are always late to the party but they always have the last dance. Just look at history..they were not the first or the leader in...Networking..Novell was King...but now? Lotus123? Lotus Notes? WordPerfect? XBOX?Netscape?the only innovative thing they came up with is Sharepoint. whether you love them or hate them, they will throw everything at the phone market just like they did in all those other markets and eventually they will win!

I had an iPhone 3g on a 2 year contract and stuck with it for a year before abandoning it and going back to my old Nokia. Why, because I found the key pad very difficult and kept miskeying when composing a text, and none of the SMS alerts were any good and I couldn't customise it like the ring tones.

Sure the apps are great but you can use an iPod Touch for them and then have a decent phone.

I'm glad there's one person who won't switch. At the rate people are ignoring WP, you'll give it a new boost. I recently paid through my nose to jump ship from a Focus to iPhone 4S. What with the denial of lack of features (yes I have to be able to "do" things with the interface), the lack of any commitment to add features, the complete ignorance (refer to craig mundie's comments on Siri), and the audacity to tell me I don't really need a feature, lack of good apps (I can quote names lest someone spam me with death threats - Yelp, CallToPark, Public transit in Maps, lack of compass in maps, photosynth, etc.), lack of any site to provide feedback, etc. I just needed to follow Microsoft's advice to put the phone out of the way, and really get a phone that allowed me to do the things I want to do. I'm sorry, but the 4S is also more responsive than the Focus - purely objective observation - bring your focus, we'll it it beside my 4S, and we can juggle between activities and video-record the whole thing. I'm not arguing "my side" vs "your side" here. I'll pay another 400$ to break 4S contract if you can prove yours does whatever the 4S does, and does it faster, AND does it with a better UI.

So in short yes - all things being equal, the WinPhone UX wins out. All things, however, are not equal.

WinPhone may improve - granted. I'm being asked to pay 300$ now, not when it becomes feature-compatible, for the same price at which I can do more with the iPhone.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 November, 2011 21:34

There's a lot to be said about looking at the competition, learning frmo them and then doing it again.

Apple wants to be the only company in the world and wants everyone else to quit their day jobs. Microsoft wants to be in everything the world sells but let other people sell it. Android just desperatly wants to be there so it gives itself out there for free. The Apple guys will remain loyal... but its the companies who sell android devices that are going to find it compelling to switch and license windows mobile... because of the pipeline. When you can get different companies to all make money, they will play the game.

Just think about what Nokia added to Mango (maps).. and now imagine what adding skype and kinnect will do. If the new versions of kinnect are lip reading and skype is bringing millions of users to the platform. This is just in the next year or two. Now imagine the next year's acquisitions and how that will take things further.

Windows 8 takes the metro UI to the PC and allows Nokia to enter the PC tablet market at the same time samsung has just had enough of Android. Watch what happens there.

Microsoft has done an admirable job going from huge market share, down to nothing, and then stacking the cards so that it can come back.

If nothing else, it will be very entertaining to watch this

You either are being paid by Microsoft to write such crap, or you simply do not use phones for business and/or applications that need to work. Frankly, I am waiting for iPhone5 which will make use of ios5, which someone compared to ios4 as being the same, not. Obviously the comparison was superficial and the anonymous writer does not code. Also, HP would not have shutdown a billion dollar company if Apple was not ahead and frankly will be ahead for quite some time. It is all in the software - and Microsoft never wrote code that works right - it was always cheap and always has problems to this day. Microsoft is dead, but does not know it yet due to its size. If and when Apple falls, it will NOT be Microsoft that replaces 'the ever changing king of the hill'........

Have fun being a Microsoft fan....

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 30 November, 2011 01:17

I hold an Msc in Ergonomics from Loughbourough Universtiy so I am not quite sure what you mean by

"It's exact negation of ergonomic and any style"

Ergo = Work
Nomos = Natural Law
Ergonomics = Natural Law of Work

Ergonomics is a complex inter-disciplinary field and should not be trivialised by such general comments purporting to cast expert opinion on a subject matter which you clearly do not have a grasp of.

In fact your sentence itself is very lacking in good ergonomics since it is not expressed clearly using correct grammatical constructs and evokes a sense of confusion for the reader. It also indicates a sense of aggravation and physiological imbalance. This can in no way be reconciled with the lofty end user design objective of ergonomics, which is to create products that humans can use efficiently, effectively and help improve the general wellbeing of all stakeholders who may be impacted by the products existence. Perhaps you are being failed by the current generation of products and tools with which you are surrounded and thus create such a condition.

Competition between companies is generally a good thing Apple out innovated the broader smartphone market years ago with what was a notable improvement in user experience. No question. Nokia and Microsoft have done a similar thing now and it should be applauded they are turbocharging innovation in the smartphone market, Android is doing likewise, competition brings out the best in us and is a good thing. In terms of the Windows Phone the superior design language of the Metro UI, the typography, the iconography really do make this phone easier, better and more pleasurable to use for the average user. Siri may be an innovation in the Voice Recognition space, on the surface it looks quite compelling, but they have by no means cracked it, I have seen it fail many times already and heard some amount of negative feedback. I myself am a software developer, my own company Effective Computing Ltd is creating next generation voice recognition systems for the Windows Platform. One day this year I issued 2612 commands to my system. I am quite pleased with that, but still feel we still have a long way to improve. It’s a tough problem space I can assure you.

We can only hope that future generations of products will enable us to work together more collaboratively and effectively. Fundamentally we are not in the process of "just" creating shiny new toys and putting each other down because I think my technology is superior to yours, we are in the process of battling for survival, solving tough real world problems like War, Terrorism, Disease, Education, Environmental Degradation and so forth. We will not solve these problems with an immature and socially retarded culture, we need to aim higher.

Sometimes I wonder what evolutionary purpose all the negativity in comments feeds serves humanity. I remember a great tweet I came across it said:

“Against trolling: Every minute spent thinking about things you despise is a minute you could have spent making something admirable.”

Please bear this in mind as you move around the internet weaving your web of influence.

What I find funny, is that the article is talking about people who are using a smart phone but have never posted a comment on an article like this one. By posting a comment, you are already disqualifying your own comment. When I read the article, I thought about my parents (retired), my sister (a lawyer with a blackberry), and my other sister (the teacher with a Mac, but a basic phone). I am the only one with a smartphone, but they all think that my Windows Phone is really neat and easy to use. Interface is King!

MS has a very good phone with WP7 with Mano update. I hope they do an even better job with WP8, and get the phone makers to produce better phones with duel core, better screens etc...

LMAO I was an early taker of smartphones way before Steve jobs declared himself creator. I had Sony Erricsons P900 and W960i as well as offerings from Samsung and a Hewlett Packard with a 900Mhz processor all were touch-screen all had apps and all worked extremely well and all before the iphone was a glint in apples itchy ******. But then Apple would really like us to forget that technology existed before they reinvented it so lets forget about early computers that laid the way for them the BBC micron and ZX spectrum never existed and Xerox did not invent the paperless desktop lmao. lets also forget about apples re invention of video calling lmao sorry I just cant help lmao sorry I just have to lmao

I personally find the iPhone dull, love my Android, but I am fascinated by Windows.

Has anyone seen the Nokia Lumia launch party gig that deadmau5 did with rocking techno tunes and the unbelievable lightshow projected onto Millbank tower?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX2Gd-kqV5s

Nokia's marketing for the Lumia is verging on Genius, it's so much more creative and edgy than anything Apple could come up with.

Nokia rock!

deadmau5 rocks!

Welcome to the cutting edge.

You said earlier

"Interesting comments, folks, thanks, great to hear from both sides. This article is just my opinion as someone who's a bit bored of both Apple and Android, so keep your opinions coming!"

I am not a Nokia marketing person at all. I actually just love their marketing, the Eggs and Bacon Guy, Gangsta Ironing, hillarious. The deadmau5 gig is in my opinion the best commercial ever made.

I absolutely LOVE my WP7. What was said before, cannot be stressed enough. Try it before you bash it, you just might be pleasantly surprised. I no longer feel the need to go back to my iPhone (haven't used it in over 6 months), and the Android tablet mostly just sits on the living room table.

The thing with WP7 is that it's not just a bunch of big boxes on your main screen, but a bunch of 'live' tiles which animate themselves, provide you information, updates, news and more. It just makes one smile when using the phone, and it's not just the interface which is King, but also the usability, and in my honest opinion, WP7 has this in droves. The apps are often linked allowing you to do a number of actions in lower number of taps than on either an iPhone or an Android based device.

Granted, it may not be to everyones liking, but for once Microsoft delivered and this is not the travesty that Windows Mobile was (ugh, possibly even more crash prone than any Android device I've ever used).

Anyway, I'm a happy user since day (owner for a year now) and the app store whilst not as expansive as with the competition, has provided me the apps I need and use.

To each their own, and for those who add lame comments berating one device over another, at least try to provide a cohesive, non-fanboy like reasoning.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 30 November, 2011 11:42

p.s. If your phone doesn't make you smile, you're using the wrong phone. Just had to get that out since some people don't seem to understand why some of us smile when using a WP7.

When I first saw WP I was doubtful, but after getting my hands on it, I absolutely love it. The interface is like a breath of fresh air compared to other brands, which look so dated now. Im up for upgrade next year and have been looking at WP and iPhone. Apple do have the best app portfolio and ecosystem intergration right now but the GUI and screen size is half a decade out of date. I love the pushed info to the tiles so I can see things at a glance. I love not having to open and close numerous apps to communicate with one contact in different ways. I love the tile customization apps and the singular GUI vision across OS and apps. And Nokia have produced a beautiful device to compliment the OS. Well done to Microsoft for their GUI innovations. Keep it coming.

Rich,

Still no apology for your rude statement?

"We did see the Deadmau5 projection, it was rubbish. Get off our site, Nokia marketing person"

Is this the level of professional integrity you wish to maintain with your readership? You are completely undermining your credibility by acting in such a way.

Please bear in mind that it is great companies like Nokia who pay your bills by providing you with the opportunity to work as a journalist commenting on their products. Therefore even if I was a Nokia marketing person it would make no sense to act so rudely. I personally would welcome a Nokia employee onto the site. As a reader I'd have no problems with that. In all the years of reading and commenting on blogs I have not come across a blog writer who treated their audience so badly. What's your excuse?

And do you really think the deadmau5 gig was rubbish? What specifically did you find rubbish? Was it the rocking tunes? Was it the quality of the professional production? Was it the exceptional cutting edge projected graphics? Or is it that you feel you lose credibility by admiting to your readership that marketing can actually also be cool and is actually a part of the product itself? It's the overall product and brand interaction experience that maketh the product, it's just another part of the interface. The Nokia Lumia deadmau5 gig is merely an extension of the product and brand experience to which you have already openly subscribed.

I'd never get an iPhone because I don't want to deal with the arrogant ********* at the Apple store. Case in point. I went to the Apple store at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. I needed to pick up three tiny screws that fell out of the chassis of my Macbook, yeah, just fell out, and it's only a year old. Crappy build for sure. The idiots at the Apple store wouldn't hand them over cuz 'they like to do that themselves'. Withholding needed parts, due to poor workmanship, and then charging to put them in (like all of three seconds), smacks of fraud. I'm done with Apple; they can keep their crappy products and attitude.

I think Rich Trenholm is absolutely spot on. I have been feeling exactly the same for some time now. I couldn't have said it better. I do feel like Windows is such an underdog, and it is highly respected. I personally think its metro styling and its "touch and go" idea behind the OS is revolutionary.

Its clear that alot of competitors are taking a giant leaf from MS book. Has anybody seen the new GOGGLE MAIL look on the web? Very metro wouldn't you say.

I feel like I am tied to Apple because I absolutely love the hardware! it is incredible, and I also have everything MAC, so for me the ecosystem is amazing but I still feel like with my phone theres something missing, and it really saddens me as I don't have the courage to break free from this ecosystem. I have the iPhone 4s, and have had every iPhone since the iPhone launch, and completely agree, it WAS a revolutionary phone. However, I now feel it hides behinds it's APPSTORE way too much. Which is a shame, because APPLE could do way more with the dated operating system to keep their consumers happy and on their toes. But I feel like they have become stagnant and lost alot of flair to be adventurous. i feel like they are more adventurous with the hardware than they are with the software. This is a shame because I feel like their needs to be a balance at some point.

With the Windows Phones, I am not a huge fan of the hardware yet, still not happy with the plastic phones. I would be more than happy to make the leap of change if I find a phone which blows me away, with so many manufacturers making phones for windows now...whats the delay!

I think Apple really needs to stop hiding behind the APPSTORE and really needs to go back to the drawing board...FIVE iOS's later...and I really cannot tell the difference. Atleast the Windows can hold it's own and still getting recognized despite their meager APPSTORE.

So the bottom line is Rich Trenholm, I completely agree with you and its about time somebody had to balls to say something real for once.

PS. to alot of the people posting on here...head over and read this: "The 7 worst fanboy groups on the Internet" http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gadgets/the-7-worst-fanboy-groups-on-the-internet-50006292/

In the "Wait, what just happened?" section you forgot to mention Palm. Treos were the darlings of the smartphone world and then became roadkill when the iPhones came out.

And it wasn't so much the lack of apps as that Palm had stopped innovating and settled on its laurels. That allowed Apple to kill it off with a sexy phone even before it set up the marketplace!

and the author has missed the glaringly obvious point that if the windows phone 7 interface is so intuitive, you can pop a clone on your android and have the apps as well (or whichever launcher the individual finds more intuitive launcher pro, SPB shell, Go Launcher, ADW launcher, slide screen etc, etc, etc, etc).

Personally I hate the tiles and helvetica or whatever of WP7 and judging from it's market share (equal to Bada if you need to know) so does most of the users too!

anonymous 1 December, 2011 13:07

"WIN PHONE DOESNT VIBRATE AND RING AT THE SAME TIME, I HATE THAT.."

My HD7 does.

It's been fun reading all the sour grapes from the iPhone fanboys. You guys are so sad!

After 18 months with a 3GS, I am so relieved to be free of it: The screen is too small and the spell checker drove me wild; causing more than one embarrassing moment. It completely screwed my Outlook calendar, which I had to restore from a backup. It never did everything my old windows mobile phone did and wasn't significantly easier to use(WM 6.5). It didn't allow me to transfer contact information with non-iPhone users via Bluetooth and as for transferring information to my HD7? Forget it, you might as well try to escape from Alcatraz! It's MY information Apple!

As for Android, my only experience with it is getting other people's phones doing what they want: downloading apps, setting up various file formats etc. The only reason Android is popular is that it's free, so the phones makers are pushing it. Android is a mess and a security disaster.

With Windows Phone you get the best of both worlds: a choice of form factor, so you can have a keyboard if you want it, choice of screen size right up to 4.7". You can have DNLA compatibility if you want it and many more features various makers have incorporated into their models. On the other hand, Microsoft have similar stringent control over apps as Apple, so security will never be the problem it is on Android.

My HD7 works the way I want it to, quickly and cleanly. My only gripe is that it doesn't sync with Outlook and SPB don't make a version of their Wallet for it. These 2 things would mean I'd only need one phone again,

Just thought I'd add my own thoughts into this gumbo of phone hatred.

PERSONALLY. And I say this with the greatest intent, so as not to offend those who seem to think that anyone posting an opinion immediately indicates that that person believes it to be fact.

I think the Windows OS is superb. It's clean, simple and intuitive. Sure it could do with more apps, and an option to tell Twitter to **** off given that most Brits don't give a flying monkey about it.

Both 'Droid and iOS are superb systems that work well for different people. iOS is again simple and easy to navigate, but the lack of widgets, customization (and no, sorting your apps into folders marked 'sport' 'fun' or 'media' does not indicate a customizable user interface) makes it poor compared to the more flexible lines set by Android.

Android on the other hand is chaotic when you first get it. That first fifteen minutes where you try and wrangle your homescreen into something managable can be damn stressful, the fact that the system is totally different on each platform doesn't make it easier to be honest.

The Author of this article said that Windows OS is a middle ground was absolutely right. Apple is locked up tighter than the glory hole of a thrice blessed virgin princess, and droid is the crazy wench that you met down the bar the other night after three too many shots of tequila.

Windows OS is the girl you meet at the coffee shop, cute, smart and sensible with a sense of fun.

Also I apologize for the god awful cliches and comparisons there..

By all means, keep buying phones with metal cases, but don't come and complain about reception issues. There's a reason why most phones are made of some kind of plastic. Since the antenna is inside, a metal casing is obstructing good reception.

Let me start by saying I have both, the 3GS and a WP7.5 HTC 7 Pro. I love the design of WP7, even befor Mango. The Metro interface is just beautiful. I enjoy the design of the fonts, the half cut interface tempting you to look further past the screen. It is very much a design statement, but still very user friendly. Apple on the other hand, is boring. I felt this way from day one. But the hardware outranks any design, still. And the apps are fantastic.

I am less than impressed with the quality of the apps for windows phone. Whatsapp is slow, quircky, history not entirely viewable. Huffingtonpost has no comments section, the most interesting part of the entire huffpo experience. And the home screen (live tiles) is, well, not really a home screen. Although I am imressed with the deep link possibilities of Mango.

I never owned an Android device. I just don't like the interface, although I was drawn to it due to the customizability of the interface. But I never made the jump. It is messy, unorganized clutter. IMO...

I'm afraid I'm just old school. I would love to see the smoothness of nowadays phones, with the design and multitouch functionality of iPhone on a Windows Mobile device. Back in the day I was so in love with my handhelds. Ever since windows CE and Pocket PC. I have still somewhere the Toshiba E800, HTC Advantage and SE Xperia X2...

I'm getting old... Back in the day.... Everything was better ;-)

Very good article raising points plenty of reviews simply ignore. Had the iPhone 3GS which I loved but just couldn't get myself to buy the 4S given that it's really nothing new and innovative (apart from Siri maybe). Siri is kind of nice but still too frustrating and faulty to use for me. Anyway, bought the Lumia 800 2 weeks ago after having given up on Nokia completely (let's face it, for the last 3 years those Finns have produced nothing but clunky crap). What can I say, I love it. Fast, easy to use, a fresh and intuitive approach to the UI and some things like navigation (free to use in any country without roaming charges) or umlimited free music (with Mix Radio) that Nokia throws in make it outstanding vs. other smartphones for me. Probably not the best smartphone out there (which is probably the Galaxy S2, I think) but very good and something truly unique. Would not want to go back to the iPhone.

Great article!

I am an iPhone user and it has served me well, but I am changing to the Lumia 800. Tried it out and it just felt so nice in the hand. Love the design and the new Mango interface. Im not a fanboy of any kind I just felt that same excitement touching the new Lumia as I did with my first iPhone.

I have also been looking at Android phones but none of them has a design of my liking. And then there is the UI can't say that I am a fan. Security issues, stutter, etc...

Well, it should not be stated that "touch screen" = "good usability". There are many people who DO NOT like touch screens. I have tried most kinds (Win7, Win 7.5, iOS, few androids, Symbian, Bada) and only touch screen interface I really liked was in Nokia N9. But for real business use and writing a lot emails, etc (the original domain of smart phones) I want full QWERTY keyboard with real keys.
At the moment still using my Nokia E75, waiting for something as good coming with full keyboard. Being able to run "Angry birds" is not good enough reason to get a new phone, IMHO. :-)

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 2 December, 2011 10:45

A good interview. iPhone was and still is good and well made system. It has a ton of apps and a large fanbase. After that, there has NOT been anything new. iPhone 4s is just like earlier version. OS looks the same and nothing has changed. Siri is nice, but thats not gamebreaking feature. Android is customization king. But it also has been the same for years. n+1 new features comes (most are cloned from others). Android is a phone for nerds who likes to modify "own system".

Windows Phone is a fresh system which will be the name of 2011. When Windows 8 OS / Tablets / Apollo hits the road, it will be changing point. All these systems deserved its slot, but I am going to use Nokia phones with an excellent navigation maps, MS office etc. Besides Android is a cloned software and every Aphone pays license costs to MS, so they can make WP better! :)

Even now, you'd have to prise my Nokia N8 from my cold dead hands, you could offer me a SG2,or an Iphone 4s for free and I'd still knock them back.
Windows 7 with a phone with the spec of an N8 -would be the best phone yet IMO.

As for having to jailbreak your phone to be able to use it to the spec of the other smart phones?- erm- says it all really. Apple want to control you- they want to own you- tell you what to do and when to do it....fine, if your a sheep.

I have a Windows Phone 7.5, and I prefer it over any phone you can name. I love Metro UI, you can instantly see updates from home. It never locks up, and it works brilliantly. Maybe the marketplace isn't good as Apple's, but it soon will be. The marketplace keeps growing, at a very fast rate. And for those idiots who just hate Windows Phone because they think it's Windows Mobile based, STFU.

It's sad that some people's identities are tied to their phone's make & model. If you say something innocent, like "iOS looks outdated", they act like you just kicked their puppy. You people need to get a life.

That said, I just switched from an iPhone to an HTC Titan WP7. And I am never going back to iOS. Ever.

I did compare my iPhone to my HTC Titan... iOS looks outdated. WP7 looks alive and fresh. The way apps work is just so beautiful. Instead of having to tap a button to go to another area of an app, with WP7 you just swipe. It is gorgeous. The integration of social media is just wonderfully done. Facebook chats, Texts, Windows Live IMs, all in one stream. Facebook contacts, Google contacts, Windows Live contacts, Twitter contacts (optional), LinkedIn contacts all in one place, and some are even automatically linked together if they're the same person.

True, Windows Marketplace (App store) isn't that big yet. But, you have to remember that once upon a time, neither was the iTunes App store. They all start small. You can go from 1 app to 1,000,000 million apps in a day. And honestly, all the apps I used on my iPhone were already available in the Marketplace.

(BTW, a lot of those apps in iTunes are garbage. What good is a large number if a good chunk of it is filled with garbage apps?)

From what I have experienced with Android, it just feels like it's iOS's rebellious little brother with a criminal record. Especially now with the CarrierIQ issue, I really would not trust an Android device now.

Face it. Microsoft actually did something really, really well for once.

And no, Microsoft is not paying me. They don't need to. This is my opinion.

anonymous 4 December, 2011 22:53

What ever you say, WP looks just boring. Little squares on the screen, what on original idea, oh my...

But MS has manged very well with raising the hype. Who else could sell little squares as "innovative"?

Oasis (the band) was once joking "we are better than the Beatles". Soon it was taken as a fact amongst the fans. Propaganda is not about the facts, it's about repeating your message so many times that it becomes the fact.

Respect other opinions, and do own a HD7. I find the WP7 interface rather boring, and it requires too much scrolling because of the larger size of the tiles vs.icons. It is smooth, and fluid, I will give you that, but too restricted, and controlled ala iOS. Bottom line, the only platform that allows me to do the tasks I desire while out is Android. I used to be a Windows Mobile fan bordering on evangelist, and WM out of the box still does more of my needed tasks than any other platform. Unlike the horror stories you see on the net, for me, Windows Mobile was stable, finger friendly on 4" VGA screens, and was a great match for my needs. Android is now my main platform since MS abandoned the power user. I have found Android to be as stable as iOS, has many more options, plays Flash fine, and bottom line, allows me to accomplish the tasks I need unlike iOS, or WP7. I like having a choice of interfaces. Overall, I find the Android skins add features that I enjoy, and consider an enhancement. I don't necessarily like all the additions on TouchWiz, Sense etc., but overall, feel they are an enhancement.

After years of using WM, and Android, I find both platforms are stable, reliable, and I have to soft reset my iOS devices at least as frequently as Android, or classic Windows Mobile.

Again, I respect other opinions, and realize other posters have different experiences. I wanted to like WP7 since I was such a fan of WM, but WP7 just does not meet my needs. For other users, WP7 may be a good match.

How many people are aware microsoft make more money out of Android os than their own windows os.
Its simple Android stole all their ideas from microsoft, but microsoft sued them & they have to pay big time for it. That tells me microsoft are the real inovation leaders. I had an android phone, remember the old HTC Hero? I had one of them then last November I tested out a HTC HD 7 in the O2 store and I was AMAZED at how smooth and fluid the interface was. December 2010 I got a LG Optimus 7 after doing some research about all the devices and I ended up going for the one with DNLA support and the best battery life of them all. Of course as Windows Phones aren't locked to networks I didn't even have to change my network.

However, 8 months down the line and with no word from Microsoft about any updates, I got fed up with it, the few bugs, the patchy internet and lack of multitasking or app switching. I changed that month back to Android and got myself a Nexus S because I wanted a true android experience.

I also have an iPhone 4 as my work phone but there is NO way I would ever use one of those as my every day phone, they're slow, clunky, they freeze often, iOS5 has not made existing iDevices better, everyone I know who had updated to iOS5 has complained that their phone or iPod is a hell of a lot slower.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't go back to Windows Phone, maybe when Tango comes out and I'm going to get myself a new phone around then I'll see what the latest Nexus phone is like compared and then make my decision. But for now I'm sticking with my Nexus S and I've made up my mind that I'll never be an early adopter again for whatever mobile OS comes out in the future

Love the article, I am also a iPhone 3G convert. I wanted the iPhone 4 but being a left hander and having to cover a phone a beautiful as the iPhone 4 with a rubber bans was to me, like Jenifer Aniston under a burka! That ad Steve Jobs saying there was nothing wrong with the phone, it was us customers who were holding it wrong. That arrogance drove me to Windows Phone 7!

The Windows Phone experience is so refreshing, it makes the other O/S's seem pedestrian at best and I have all the apps I loved on my iPhone (over 100 of them). I really don't care who has the biggest app store or who is has the biggest market share, all I care is that Microsoft and the hardware manufacturers quietly keep doing what they are doing, thats all.

I have had a few devices and my latest is the Focus S, it's awesome. Yes I’m in the UK and no you can’t buy it here n the UK

Nice article. I got a Lumia 800 on launch day so I've given it a good kicking the past couple of weeks. It's great. I find the interface to be very instinctive and fun to use. I also think the interface is very pretty.

I used to have a 3gs and I was a little worried I would miss the variety of apps, but that hasn't been the case. The Windows Phone version of Spotify is particularly excellent and that's all I really need.

I loved my 3gs and still do. If the iPhone 4s had received a more sexy makeover, rather than a new hat and a splash of Blue Stratos, I would probably stuck with Apple's blower, purely because I'd invested quite a bit in iTunes. But that wasn't the case.

I agree with the article, interface IS king. And for now at least, I prefer the Windows option.

Rich, so glad you like the phone! Your articles have always helped me.

The Nokias aren't in the States yet but this past weekend I recieved my HTC Titan in the mail. It is gourgeous and the screen is HUGE. I've been going around giggling like a school girl. I've now stopped Windows Phone Fanboying and just take out the phone to use. People ask to play with it and I don't say a thing. The interface sells itself. I even got my Mother a Titan as her first smart phone. (The Nokia 800 is beautiful buy the way. I need one of those too!)

I looooove my iOS 5 and I prefer when I can get where I want on my phone in under a few seconds, but I do like androids widgets and how the phone buttons always on the bottom

Enjoyed reading this article. Loved the childish humour. I've used both iOS and Android, as well as others, and I can honestly say that I really like the new Windows OS. When the iPhone came out, it was new and the app store really made it something worth having but the restrictions are insane. Everything is a chore to do. Even something as simple as changing the brightness without opening up the settings section. I prefer Android because they really filled in a lot gaps that Apple seemed to refuse to to in their OS, however overall, they're not doing much to really be different. They're like twins trying to fighting over an identity crisis.

Windows is completely different. It just makes sense to me. Simple but effective. Yea, its not perfect but what is does, it does very well. The tiles are awesome. Well done Microsoft.

OH AND FOR THE RECORD. The title of this article is "Why I", NOT 'Why we", NOT "CNET". This is this particular member of their staff's opinion, on why HE doesn't want an iPhone any more. Its his opinion, and he has voiced it. Judging this persons opinion, as if it represents the whole of Cnet is stupid.

I own an Windows Phone and I love it!

It is a Samsung Omnia 7. Just a 1GB processor - but is damn fast and slick!
Perfect user experience and UI flow. Smooth, crisp interface, automatic updates and a pleasure to use overall. I understand exactly what the editor (Rich Trenholm) felt when he wrote the article. Use it for 1 week and will be hard to return to something else. It happened to me too

Microsoft reinvented itself with this phone.
I'm a happy happy WP7 Mango user

I showed my Nokia lumia 800 to my colleagues today for the first time, after making sure i knew what i was doing with it, after being an android fan for last couple years. All my colleagues have android.

It was like watching small children with big round eyes on christmas morning marvelling at the toy they wanted.
I allowed them to play about with the phone & they all came to the same conclusion, its beautiful & simple interface was amazing. I was like a proud father.
When a person actually has time to sit with the phone & realise its beauty, you will become sold.

I was the most ardent defender of android & nothing could touch it. I wanted the Lumia though because of the phone, not the W7 interface. How stupid i was not to look outside my own little universe & give another os any chance.

I take it all back, some of the nasty things i said about windows phones & for that matter ios.

I was wrong & to be honest they are all fantastic inventions & we are so lucky to be using this technology in are every day lives.

I jumped to wp7 after webOS bit the dust and I couldn't be happier. It just works how a phone should. Its funny to see how vile the apple fan boys get when someone doesn't agree with them. Apple is for closed minded elitists who love themselves. Wp7 is the future! Win 8 is gonna be even better.

I liked my Iphone 3GS until the 5.0 update and 5.0.1 now the focus is out of wack and the images are fuzzy. Anoid that apple has not been able to fix this issue. My Christmas may be a Galaxy2

Windows 7 OS has been out for a year now. HTC, Samsung and LG all have had Windows 7 OS. Why is it all of a sudden there's is a hype behind it??...Oh wait!..it's because Nokia have joined the party. Don't get me wrong I like Windows 7 OS but come on! its all MARKETING. I have lost a little respect for CNET.

This review is to promote NOKIA Lumia NOT Windows 7 OS

Regarding some of the above comments: If you think WP7 is just about the "launcher" you have obviously never used one! ;) Android with a pasted WP7launcher is still...a chaotic ridiculous Android. And whoever said the article wasn't balanced - did you read the TITLE? lol
I LOVE MY WINDOWS PHONE! Agree with the author, except I like the Marketplace more. lol.

I reckon all these anonymous comments are the same guy, posting over and over again, tirelessly repeating his fanboy drivel. Its pathetic how some people get so worked up over a piece of metal, which you have been told is the best thing ever by the companies that build them. People seriously get a life.

I have a Windows Phone and I'm very happy with it, what are you all gonna do? Call me an idiot and begin an endless tirade against me? Grow up and get real.

To me the UI is ugly, and live tiles will not be very innovative if one upcoming technology becomes more mature enough. Let me explain:
1. The UI is ugly - Why? because they are mono-color, and the texts are plain also. Many of the icons are also plainly colored. There are no shades or degrees of color within the tiles or texts, there is no shadow effect...My major issue with the UI is, however, that there are way too many texts! Too many words in the UI! I prefer icons to words.

2. The live tiles - This effect will not be very interesting if one technology becomes more mature in the future - proximity sensor and gestures. The major benefit of live tiles is that they show information without you opening the apps, and they show the info on the homescreens. (One problem of this is that you have to wait for a few seconds to see the whole animations. But I'm not going into this now) However when future screens are equipped with proximity sensors, we just need to move our fingers near to the app to show certain informations inside the apps, and when you move your finger away the information collapses.

Because of this, I don't consider that live tiles to be a winning asset of the UI, it is in fact something that is non-future proof.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 December, 2011 11:46

Some of the comments here are just plain ridiculous. Nothing is future-proof and taste/opinion are subjective; there is no right and wrong here, only grounds for comparison and debate. Not one person here, even the reviewer, is "right" about iOS, Android or WP7. One person's fancy new trainers are another person's garish nightmare.

Some say WP7 is ugly, some people don't like the live tiles and some people criticise the lack of apps (some 45,000 at the moment) as if they use all 140,000 on their iPads! I use roughly 10 apps regularly now, as WP7 has social networking built in, so I have Tunein radio, Spotify, eBay and Office Mobile on the go with a few other less essential ones, with some games to pass the time if needs be. As a phone to organise my friends/contacts/calendars and actually make calls (my old iPhone 3GS was notorious for missing calls) then my WP7 is, for me, the best phone I have ever owned...but it's not going to be the best that most of you have ever owned. You are neither right to criticise those who like WP7 or wrong to have a different opinion. All this "fanboy" nonsense is puerile and pointless, not to mention irrelevant.

If I was to say "Android is buggy and slow compared to iOS 5" I wouldn't be a fanboy of Apple...i'd just be a ****head.

To Daniel Cool though, I wish to say this; you have an issue with Live Tiles because they're not future proof and something may come out at some point in the future that's better....? OF COURSE SOMETHING WILL! Progress happens and it's inevitable! To criticise something based on an alternative that isn't actually available is, however, just dumb and I am right about that. Nothing but speculation there, which is no solid foundation for any kind of debate or argument.

We're all different, folks, we all like different things. I like WP7 a lot. You don't? That's fine, but don't tell me I'm wrong when all I have done is express an opinion. That's childish.

I think iPhones are quite good despite the fact it s not customisable. You won't like an iPhone if you are a hacker iPhone is just boring because you can't get live wallpapers and widgets like on android.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 January, 2012 00:21

I can't believe all these people slagging off the iPhone who have probably never even seen one, I have the iPhone 1.0 and it's amazing, it has 'touchscreen' which means you can make things happen just by touching the screen.

1000118233's avatar

1000118233 3 January, 2012 23:37

Lol!

Everyone has different needs. If an iPhone doesn't do what you want it to do, then you're free to like something else, no? If you're happy with it, that's also fine. I also had an iPhone and it was cool, but it hasn't evolved.
I like Android not because of the widgets and the wallpapers, I've passed that stage long ago.
But with Android I can access the file system, change the battery, change the SD card and it's free from the Apple ecosystem. Those things are important to me. Maybe not for others, I don't care.
WinPhone7 is somewhere in the middle. I don't like it that there's no SD card or access to the battery on the Lumia, but the interface is fresh and user friendly and certainly a promising sign for what's to come from MS.

Don't be a fanboy, it's childish.

Got the lumia on release date. On 3rd January 2012 got the Nexus & sold Lumia. Its simple very very very poor battery. Never owned a phone so poor on battery life & yes i did use the fix updates & still terrible. Also no battery percentage display, so no warning until almost too late. Another thing when bringing up phone numbers in people, the display is so small & no i'm not old needing glasses i have perfect vision although struggle with the display size. Yes it does have bluetooth, although it will only link to a bluetooth headset. No data exchange. Its also a heavy phone & people say excellent build quality, i dont think so. The screen on mine became loose within a week. Contacted Nokia & told them & their reply was i must have damaged it, when i had been treating it like a new born baby. No sorry, got nexus & how refreshing to be back with true quality.

Sorry to hear that. But as other commenters point out this is my opinion (not "hype") and as I specifically state in the article "It's only the arrival of Spotify in the Marketplace that has triggered this damascene conversion in your humble correspondent". There's always a point where technology matures, and for me , this is the point where Windows Phone matures.

windows phone looks nice, but there are a few major problems, for a start it doesn't support screens with a resolution higher than 480X800, and you can't record 1080p video using a windows phone mobile either. Also wp7 doesn't support flash or dual-core processors. This means that if you want to buy a windows phone, you're going to have to buy a phone with hardware that is already outdated, and that is why I'm not going to buy a windows phone any time soon
