When will my Samsung Galaxy S2 get Ice Cream Sandwich in UK?

The long-awaited update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 to the latest version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), began on 19 March.

Samsung pushes the new software to the various networks -- such as O2, Orange and Three -- which may or may not tweak the interface before setting it loose on your phones. I've been in touch with all the UK operators to see exactly when they plan to release it.

When am I getting Ice Cream Sandwich?

As far as we're aware, every major network has pushed out the ICS update now. SIM-free S2s should have the upgrade too.

We haven't had confirmations from any of the operators who piggyback on the major networks -- companies such as Virgin Mobile, Tesco and so on -- so do drop us a comment if you're still waiting.

Who's got it already?

Three was first out of the gate, rolling out the update to its users on Tuesday -- and leaving the other networks looking like the laggards they are.

O2 originally told us it expected to release the update "at the end of March" -- but it sprung a pleasant surprise by unleashing ICS on 27 March, a handful of days before the end of the month.

Vodafone was next, teasing us with the prospect of an update on 12 April but delaying it at the last minute. The delay was only a minor blip though -- the operator confirmed to us on the 17th that ICS is now available for its customers to download.

Orange said the update would be available "by the end of the week" on 19 April.

T-Mobile was the last of the major networks to update, with its rollout beginning on 23 April.

SIM-free owners received the update on 17 April, nearly a month after they were first promised it, after a Samsung exec admitted they would be last in line. It didn't quite work out that way, but the delay was still extremely galling to S2 fans.

What's taking so long?

This is just the next chapter in what has been a long tale of mixed messages that's left all of us here at CNET UK -- and no doubt every S2 owner in the country -- rather frustrated. It's not surprising though. Android updates are typically slow to come out and are one of the main irks users have. Our own Luke Westaway even went so far as to argue that it's the biggest threat facing the operating system.

I suggest you bookmark this article and check back to see when your network is going to serve you your frosty software treat. In the meantime, check out the 10 reasons why ICS beats Gingerbread and head over to our Facebook page to tell us just how livid you are with Samsung's awkward update process. Keep it family-friendly please.

If you'd like to see how we installed ICS on our Samsung Galaxy S2, watch this video:

I've got a T-Mobile S2 .... if I root it, will I be able to use the stock Samsung ICS rom?

I did this successfully on my old HTC Hero

anonymous 13 March, 2012 11:36

If my phone is unbranded, does that mean I will get ICS on the 19th????

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 March, 2012 11:56

YES, if your phone is sim free/unlocked, you'll get it.

Come on Three, don't delay the release any further!

Does anyone know or have a best guess of when the S3 will be released?

I'm worried about losing flash, which i find very useful...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 13 March, 2012 17:31

Re: flash - I wonder if the update will remove the stock browser (which has flash) in favour of chrome (which doesn't). Might be best to back up the .apk just in case.

anonymous 16 March, 2012 02:18

Just to let you guys know:
I tried the instructions on the video, it worked perfectly. The only issue I had was I had to search for a decent way to download Odin, but search for Odin v1.83 and you should get it.

We'll done on the video, I'm using ICS! - AND my phone hasn't become a brick.
Thanks!

OK, it's the 19th, and my unbranded S2 is showing no signs of an update either via Kies or via the phones Software Updater. Come on Samsung UK, get your finger out!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 March, 2012 16:06

The same for me - Unbranded S2 in the UK 4pm and no sign of it :-(

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 March, 2012 19:06

Unbranded S2 in the UK, 7pm. no sign either on the phone or over kies. :(

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 March, 2012 22:35

22:32 no sign of update for UK T-Mobile S2

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 March, 2012 22:54

funny to say that update will happen in a week commencing 19 March. Generally speaking is between now any any time in the far future. Could be 2112 :D:D!!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 19 March, 2012 23:50

for those who are waiting ics, this might not be the right time to update your galaxy s2. I'm from Korea and so many users are complaining that samsung didn't do very good job for optimizing ics on galaxy s2. a lot of bugs have been reported so far and battery life problems. And it seems that even web browsing is lower than gingerbread. Most of them who upgraded to ics are downgrading their phones to gingerbread. I think samsung will release another ics after they fix the problem.

It is ICS update :) Three Network Users in the UK can download via Samsung Kies

anonymous's avatar

Interesting. As mine is unlocked and unbranded bought on contract via carphonewarehouse and still no update..

anonymous's avatar

did anyone having XEU sales code get update?! mine is CPW still no update

anonymous's avatar

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 16:33

I just got the update on Three!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 16:40

I have SIM free S2 with XEU still I have not got the update in Kies.
I am not sure when we will get

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 18:05

it all depends on your phones sales code I guess. You can find your code on kies under firmware information in the brackets.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 18:10

I also have a sim free galaxy s2 with a 3 sim in and nothing yet, probable dependant on how old your phone is. I've only had mine 6 months.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 20:01

it dos not matter what sim is inside. matters who sold you the phone. as in above comment. once connected to kies you can see firmware code in the brackets. That code alone determines who is getting when...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 20:36

I've got sim free unbranded SG S2 XEU and no sign of update till now.
they just laugh on us. what a shame they are ...................

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 March, 2012 22:33

So far only the Three network has released the ICS update in the UK. I was surprised that the unlocked version of ICS hasn't even come out yet.
Just a note, your phone needs to be locked to the Three network in order to get the update, by inserting a Three sim won't do the trick, the update works with the network your phone is locked to, not what sim you have inserted.

This is what Samsung tweeted earlier today:
We are working as quickly as possible to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our Galaxy S II customers. The UK roll out commenced on Monday 19th March and will continue over the coming weeks, however the availability of software upgrades will be subject to each network’s own software approvals process.

I hope o2 don't take the piss!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 March, 2012 09:59

try as i might still dont see why an unbranded un locked s2 update is not done 1st still waiting a bit longer wont hurt anyone dont forget we are waiting on touchwiz a verson of ics from samsung and we all could have downloaded a vanilla isc elsewhere

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 March, 2012 13:52

sure you can download the stock samsung ICS, BUT you may find some things may not work properly,, due to special bits needed by your phone service provider....

- It will look OK, until certain things happen, and then it will either give some error code, look like it has done something and NOT do it, or just totally freeze up..

- of course you may NEVER need the 'missing' function, until some idiot 'presses the wrong button... :O

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 March, 2012 14:52

Got tired of waiting..so I flashed mine. Thanks for the instructions video CNET!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 07:56

I think a week testing should be all and more than sufficient. what are they doing? making sure it keeps working in every event? all need to do is make sure the version works on phone, holds together during datr change and also month change which can do yourself also wont freeze and totally lock out like mine did with no update last week and ensure compatibility with apps, tho most app developers have done that already. vodafone dont need to put 360 test or mobiletv test on as they never worked on sg2 anyway. they just need to make sure the pathetic my bodapone works and then done

am in Dublin and on the tthree network. I updated my s2 to ICS using kies on my laptop
Brendan

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 11:30

I've S2 with Three (however my handset is not locked to Three) and I still can't update it as KIES shows that my phone's firmware is up-to-date...why??

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 15:42

you are lucky if you not on Vodafone ... it seems like vodafone never gonna relasse update

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 19:36

Ive an unlocked gs2 and still not received ics ota or on kies thumbs down. what the hell are they upto????

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 22:11

This sucks! One of the reasons I bought an unlocked SIM-free version was to receive future firmwares promptly. Now the firmware for the branded, subsidized phones are rolling out, and still nothing for us who paid serious money up-front!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 March, 2012 22:43

I still have nothing on my sim free s2 and am very cheesed off with it. Also, I don't have a clue how it is going to happen - Kies says it is up to date, and it can't be done though the phone, so stalemate all round!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 March, 2012 10:40

i have a sim free s2 AND im with 3 yet im still waiting !

does anyone with a sim free s2 actually have it yet ?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 March, 2012 11:18

ffs! give me ICS already! There is no testing to be done, that is what we have been waiting for between when ICS was launched and now, and that seems like ages ago now!!
Simon - unbranded Galaxy SII on t-mobile!

JASB's avatar

JASB 23 March, 2012 11:31

Where is the information about this? Where can you turn to for a definitive answer?? I have a sim-free S2 and I am still just as in the dark as I was when I first heard about this update. Regardless of the network surely the updated firmware for a SIM free phone comes direclty (via Kies) from Samsung. Either ICS is available or it isnt.

This is turning into a bit of a PR fiasco. Come on Samsung - show me how professional you are or do you really not care about your customers?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 March, 2012 11:41

I'm on Vodafone with an S2 and have got fed up waiting so I decided to bite the bullet! and use the instructions on the video, it worked perfectly.!!!

Nice one ! thanks I know have ICS how cool is that and love the extra features like data manager not to sure I like the face unlock I do not see the point.

Well do all for the video! and will done Google!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 March, 2012 12:25

Shame on you Samsung! Will root my SGS2 now and will never do business with you again. In fact, I just covered the text "SAMSUNG" on the front and back of the phone with some black tape. Too annoyed to see that stupid name there!

JASB's avatar

JASB 23 March, 2012 12:58

Its just not that complicated - Samsung should release a statement or something saying exactly when the sim-free update will be available. Obviously network tied phones will always be at the mercy of their networks and how long it takes them to bolt on all of their worthless bloatware but NOT the basic update.

Very very dissapointing......

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 March, 2012 16:31

Having experienced untold woes with the update of my S2 to Android 2.3.5 I will be quite happy to stick with my (restored) 2.3.4. 2.3.5 left me with worse battery life, random restarts, removal of the scrolling 'bounce' feature replaced by a hideous blue gradient image and occasional complete shutdowns. After Samsung restored it to 2.3.4 I now have an even better phone as there is no Vodafone bloatware on it and the battery lasts a full 2 and half days between charges with average use. If you enjoy the intuitive way that long pages move with your finger at the start and end I recommend avoiding any update. (Apparently removed as result of Apple patent dispute). http://fosspatents.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/apples-favorite-make-android-awkward.html

"Post a reader comment to let us know how you're faring and whether you've got ICS on your S2 yet."

Come on, wake up CNET! Have you heard of anyone with a sim-free gs2 who has got the update in the UK? I certainly haven't. So do some real investigation instead of regurgitating Samsung's words.

I'm on a contract with O2 (UK) but I think my phone isn't locked to them (no logos at switch on or anything). Was connecting to kies every day last week hoping for the update. Eventually gave up and flashed it via Odin. Will probably reflash once the real UK version comes out (I think it's possibly a Russian version that I've used). Liking it a lot and I think it's given me better battery life...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 29 March, 2012 21:12

Hi All
I am also sick of waiting on ICS with my Sim free GS2 so I emailed O2 (My Network)
and here is the offical response =

I'm sorry to inform but you won't be able to download the new ICS v4
update on your Samsung Galaxy S2. This is because you've purchased the
phone from other outlet (Dial A phone) and your phone may not have the
O2 variant Gingerbread software. This is also because of the security
built into the Samsung download tool via Kies, to get the right
software.

You'll still be able to upgrade your phone but will have to wait for
Samsung to approve the open market variant of the software and currently
we don't have timescale for when this will happen. Once this will
happened then, you'll get this version from social market.

For any other discussion, I'd request you to contact the point of
purchase. They'll check your phone manually and will help you further
with the settings.

Regards O2 Customer Services

An update on the update... don't bother its rubbish, no folder making abilities. Female pico txt to speech has gone just male now, no blue clock or icons ... the list goes on :( all in all a bit crap really. I will be rooting in work on Monday and replacing with a custom ICS that has not been done over by Samsung and Vodafone. So begins a disappointing weekend with an OS that's rubbish might take the sim out and put it in my trusty hero as that is much better than the latest update...sob sob.

Trevore's avatar

Trevore 13 April, 2012 19:07

Trevore's avatar

Trevore 13 April, 2012 23:49

it is a Vodafone rom until Monday when I put on a synagen Rom. Just for info orange released their rom today but unbranded s2's won't get the update until tmobile decide to release their version

Trevore's avatar

Trevore 14 April, 2012 15:28

All share has stopped working correctly too. Videos it would stream happily before now give an 'unsupported file format' message. It looks like either Samsung (who in my opinion destroyed the ICS update keeping the touch wiz format instead of the native ICS as I have on my Cube u9gt2) or vodafone have mashed the ICS update and spoilt what was at one time a great phone.

I have decided to definitely revert to the previous Gingerbread ROM or use a Custom ICS ROM.

I would suggest people think very carefully before updating maybe wait a month or too until any glitches are sorted out as you really are not going to notice that much of a difference but you will notice the bad bits

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 15 April, 2012 18:21

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 April, 2012 16:42

I wonder why everyone is so desperate to update? Updates don't necessarily mean a better OS or enhanced performance. Look at the trouble everyone had (including myself) when upgrading from OS3 on a iPhone 3G to iOSwhateveritwas. Killed the phone, basically. Its better to let beta testers and the phone companies vigorously test-run the software before releasing to the impatient public. I'd much rather have a working phone (my S2 rocks) than one with a brand new OS screwing itself up. I leave it to the desperate ones to screw their phones first now... you should do the same. I think its all kudos to the phone companies for delaying their releases until they know it won't ruin their customer's experiences. Mark.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 April, 2012 22:23

i agree with what Mark has said and wish i had read his comments before updating my o2 S2 to ICS. now my skygo wont work. also stupid little things like the memo lock pin no longer has the letters on the number pad which makes it harder to remember my memo lock password (which is mainly letters) i'm sure there are other things that will annoy me. now i just want to "downgrade" to gingerbread again until things have been thouroughly tested etc. However i doesn't seem to be as easy to downgrade via Kies. if anyone has any advice on how to do this without invalidating my warranty - please let me know. i miss my skygo so much :(

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 April, 2012 01:00

you pay a premium for your phone whether it is through contract or sim-free so the manufacturers should release the latest technology and software as soon as possible for older devices not several months later. it is this poor after-sales support that many will leave android for windows or ios phones!! the carriers just add their logo to the o/s, wallpapers and bloatware nothing more!! be under no illusion....

I don't understand any of this! I have just connected to Kies, and no sign of an update. I am on Orange and other people have said they have already upgraded, although Orange told me that the upgrade isn't available to the 26th.

What on earth is going on?

I don't get it either. I'm an Orange UK user, and there's no ICS update available over kies (tried twice this morning).

I think people are getting confused with 2.3.6 as it hasn't been out long for orange??

I got a T-Mobile S2 on 17th April and as soon as I connected it via Kies it updated to Ice Cream Sandwich.

I think I know what's going on. If you bought your phone from a retailer such as phones 4 u or carphone warehouse, then technically your phone is "sim-free", regardless of whether it's an orange sim-phone or whatever. I know, confusing. Moreover, carphone warehouse S2's have their own software (it says CPW at the end, have a look the next time you are on Kies). Both "sim-free" and CPW ice cream sandwich software was made available on April 17th, hence why some people (even if they have an orange sim) was able to get the ice cream sandwich update, even if they are on orange.

It seems Orange isn't upgrading the Galaxy S2 to Ice Cream Sandwich today. "There's been some confusion, sometime soon" they say..

Orange released ICS on the 20th April, but they have not released a version for S2 with NFC yet... thats why some of you may not be able to update. @OrangeHelpers "Hi all, the Samsung Galaxy SII Ice Cream Sandwich update will be rolled out from tomorrow via Kies. ^Steve,"

Just got a call back from Orange today regarding ICS on GS2 after relentlessly pursuing an answer from them. I have been checking Kies everyday and wondering why others have been getting ICS on Orange galaxy S2s but I haven't. Rather unhelpfully, I was informed that Orange havent yet released ICS for branded Galaxy S2 and dont even have a date for doing so (she said end of Q2/beginning of Q3!!! What a joke!!) I have the Orange branded GT-i1900P version with NFC (i think this is the more recent model i.e. if you upgraded within the last 6 months). I hope this may explain things for people like me who are growing more and more frustrated. I'm toying with the possibility of taking the plunge and rooting my phone and flashing it with custom ROM. I'm growing tired of this.

still no update ics GT-i1900p orange branded sim free?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 April, 2012 22:11

you need to carefully check you model number, a google search gives a lot of 'GT-i1900p' that is the WRONG code..
It is then referred in the title correctly as the Galaxy SII (GT-i9100)

next, do you want to *lose* your NFC???

If you dont mind that, just d/l the standard ICS... (but I guess that would depend if the samsung downloader gives you the choice... )

I called up Orange this morning and they told me that they can't give me a date for ICS update. Though I've read all different dates including the 20th the 22nd the 24th and 26th. Orange seriously need to pull their socks up. Beginning to think this ICS on Orange lark is a bit of a myth. Knew I should have gone onto O2! >.

anonymous 25 April, 2012 09:16

I'm on Tesco (so O2 network) and have just downloaded ICS. All OK apart from losing my 3G completely. Called the network team and they say I have to get a new SIM card ??!! Anyone else had this issue, seems a bit of a pain considering T-Mobile just resent their customers their 3G settings...

This is what I got from Orange on Twitter

Sorry, we don't have an update on the NFC version of ICS I'm afraid ^Jon

NFC is Near Field Communication or can be known as 'Quick Tap' ^Andy

ICS has already been released for the SGSII. It's available via Kies ^Jon

Now I can even get Kies to see my phone at the minute......

Galaxy S2 with NFC on Orange UK contract, branded.

Updated to 4.0.3 via Kies and USB few days back no problem.
Was a relief as my previous update via Kies was not particularly successful without patience.

Also to note that certain cases don't fit the NFC model. BarelyThere being an example. I'm sure it's known about but I missed it and regretted not checking first.

I updated to ice cream on my Orange Samsung Galaxy S2 on Wed via the Kies software. By Thursday the WIFI has stopped working completely. Rang up Orange and they had no idea what I was talking about - got a replacement phone sent today but it is still Gingerbread :( I'm so tempted to update again - but worried the wifi will stop functioning as before. Anyone had similar problems?
