T-Mobile Sidekick III: Lots of swivel, but no speed

Being the first UK network to launch a flat-rate data tariff is some boast, but you need to make sure you have decent Web-browsing handsets to back it up. Fortunately, T-Mobile hasn't disappointed -- since launching the web 'n' walk tariff it has provided a healthy offering of Internet ready phones.

For example, there's the recently launched T-Mobile MDA Compact III, which features a handy BlackBerry Pearl-like trackball, a colour touchscreen and built-in GPS. Then there's the T-Mobile MDA Vario II, which has built-in Wi-Fi and a Qwerty keyboard.

If you're searching for something a little more unusual, however, something a little more Paris Hilton and a little less Bill Gates, then cast your eyes over this number. It's the T-Mobile Sidekick III and it's just been launched exclusively on T-Mobile. At first we weren't sure if it was coming to the UK, but now it definitely is.

The Sidekick III features a large swivel colour screen, full Qwerty keyboard, trackball, instant messaging, email, an MP3 player and a 1.3-megapixel camera. While these aren't the most advanced features available, the Sidekick III offers an innovative way to access your emails and browse the Web on the go.

The only problem we have with this device is that it doesn't have the same connectivity options as the MDA Vario II. There's no Wi-Fi or 3G, just plain old GPRS and EDGE.

While we really like the swivel-screen feature, it doesn't live up to its image as an Internet beast once you start using it. If you're looking for a good-looking email and IM device it's fine, but if you value speed and substance over style then the Vario II is a better bet. -AL
