Sony Xperia Ion coming to UK, Xperia U on T-Mobile

MWC 2012

More Sony phone news -- the Xperia Ion will come to the UK this summer, Sony announced during its press conference at Mobile World Congress.

And not only that, T-Mobile is the first network to announce it'll take one of Sony's freshly unveiled handsets, the Xperia U, this spring. Expect to see a lot more Sony handsets around in time for the Olympics.

The Xperia Ion was announced back in January at CES, but it was 4G, so was billed as strictly for the US. How times change -- in the press conference this evening, Sony said the Ion will launch outside the US this summer, getting a global rollout. Couple it with 4G arriving in the UK by the end of the year, and you've got a pretty exciting prospect.

The Ion features a monster 12-megapixel camera, and a 4.55-inch touchscreen at a resolution of 720x1,280 pixels. It runs Android Gingerbread, though we're sure it'll be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich, much like the Xperia P and U will be soon after launch. Under the bonnet is a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

"Hi all," T-Mobile cheerily announced on Twitter, "just to let you know we plan to launch the Sony Xperia U in Q2 2012." That's between April and June for us non-industry types. It said pricing will be published on its website in due course.

The Xperia S, meanwhile, is on sale now exclusively through Sony Centres in Barcelona, where Mobile World Congress is underway. So if you happen to be in town, why not swing by and pick one up? If you're not sure about it, find out more here.

What do you make of Sony's Android line-up? Is Sony back with a bang, or a whimper? Let me know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.

Back with an explosion, these phones are gorgeous and they aren't being put into the "gimmic" group of needing a quad core, you don't for a phone, I'm glad they have left the quad core out atm, I look forward to getting the Sony Xperia Ion at the end of this year :)

I don't see how they can keep making these 4.5" + handsets. I mean all the manufactures. I'm not comfortable with a handset bigger than 4" 4.3 at the very most but that doesn't mean I should have to get low end sets to keep to that size either.
