Sony Ericsson Xperia Play price slashed to £200

We've some bad news for anyone foolish enough to have splashed out on a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play in the last few months: online retailer Expansys has slashed the price of the phone to a mere £199.80. You may commence repeatedly kicking yourself in your own face.

We'd be pretty miffed, too, if we'd paid nearly £600 for the thing when it was launched less than five months ago, but it's your own fault for believing the hype. We warned you it was pants, but you wouldn't listen -- you dove in head first with your insatiable lust for decade-old PSOne games, and now you've only got yourself to blame.

Expansys hasn't given a specific reason for the dramatic price cut, but we're guessing it's not because the company was feeling charitable. It's probably fair to say the handset hasn't been selling as well as expected and now Expansys has decided to clear its remaining stock at somewhere near cost (or possibly even at a loss) in preparation for the iPhone 5.

Those who resisted the urge to buy an Xperia Play will probably be asking themselves whether it's now worth snapping one up on the cheap. The answer to that question is, of course, 'no'. The hardware is fine, but we can't justify splurging two ton on the thing when there are so many flaws to the software.

Believe us when we say there are far better ways to blow £200. Donate it to charity, blend it and make a cocktail, get it changed into twenty thousand pennies and swim in it like Scrooge McDuck, feed it to rhinos, buy 20 bottles of supermarket vodka and use that to give a top model a Tinglebath Flambe.

No, we don't know what that last one is either, but we think you understand what we're getting at here -- the Play is dead in the water.

What I find a little disappointing with this is the comment "The answer to that question is, of course, 'no'. The hardware is fine, but we can't justify splurging two ton on the thing when there are so many flaws to the software." This is based on the original review - most sites have now updated their reviews to take into account the many software updates the Xpera Play has had...
I haven't got one myself, but as per usual with CNET if it ain't Apple it's "dead in the water"...

It is still £150 too much. I have one and it is the worst smart phone I have ever owned. Sow, buggy, terrible selection of games and a utter nightmare to use.

I have an experia play and i love it. R-Type and Minecraft in my pocket. Its seen me through many a boring shopping trip out. I honestly don't see why cnet are so down on this phone. The software updated as i first turned it on and no bugs to speak of. I wouldn't recommend it to a noob. Anyone else will get a lot of enjoyment out of this for £200 and loads of old school emulators. My advice is, if ur a gamer, its a great choice.

This is an absolute steal. Had this phone for around a month and its incredible. Standard android phone with the advantage of emulating games without relying on terrible touch screen buttons.

All this BS cnet recycles about the poor software is irrelevant anyway, its been updated a lot and I don't have any problems with it.

If you're on the fence disregard this pointless article and make the jump. Playing super mario land 2 on the bus with decent buttons, can't ask for more.

The above report is wrong. The price cut is due to the fact that the 4g version has come out in the USA and soon will come out in the UK.

please see www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2393351,00.asp

These lot have no idea what they are talking about,

Yes as usual, CNET are clueless...

What a pointless article.

If the phone had a name change to Apple Xperia Play they would no doubt be gushing over it...

As we don't have 4G in the UK, I'd be very surprised if that phone came out here.

@Grier78
Thanks very much for letting us know, we'll look into that.

Pathetic article from an Apple lover! I hate your website!

Very good article.

I fully expect all Sony products to lose value in this way as consumers aviod this corrupt former global giant.

Nevermind what this article says about the Play, as it's rather obvious the article is junk, and written by somebody who either doesn't know what he's talking about, or has an axe to grind. It just shows that Rory Reid must be a bit thick if he thinks he can produce such twaddle and get away with it.

This phone is mint it,s like a laptop I use it for everything my friends have iPhones & HTC & thay are no betterthan the Xperia play
All.phones have problems with the software and other tech that's why we have uupdates to sort them out dont let anyone tell you different!!!
The only thing is that it bit heavy at first but you soon get use to that and you know when you not got it on you
And when I get time away from all the other apps on this phone I play the games with I am moor than happy with no other phones can touch this because touch screen games are not for me my fingers get in the way that's why I like this phone you just slide your Xperia in half and wow ther your joystick it just an allround great phone
Allso if you have other money products i.e. Tv / PS3 you can connect the Xperia play straight to them. What moor do you need!! A+++
Remember the phone you hold in your hand is just hardware and everything you see on the screen is software for those ho dont know?

What a joke of an article. Typical useless 'journalism' from CNET... the constant Apple bias is shocking. Every CNET article I read has some dodgy mention to Apple.

Also, if he had done his research correctly he would know that the software issues on this phone are now ironed out, making this a pretty good deal..

Just picked up an Xperia Play for £150, a steal compared to the overpriced £429 iPhone 4 or £499 iPhone 4s.
