Sky infuriates Android fans with limited support for Sky Go

Sky has angered its Android-using customers by refusing to speed up or widen Android support for its Sky Go service.

Sky Go is an app that lets you watch the Sky stuff you pay for -- including live sport and the latest movies -- on your phone or tablet.

Android fans are outraged that very few Android devices are supported, particularly as all Apple devices are catered for, and they've been piling into a huge thread on Sky's forum.

While the problem has been rumbling on since Sky Go first appeared, this latest thread has escalated the issue. It accuses Sky of being in breach of its customer code, which states, "At Sky we will do all we can to provide you with the most suitable response specific to your particular situation and to ensure, where possible, that your complaint is resolved to your satisfaction."

Sky's customer support rep Andrew Stevens promised an official statement several times last week, with users exasperated at the length of time it took to get a response. Stevens even drew criticism, perhaps tongue in cheek, for using his iPhone to post on the forum.

Excuses

But when the response came, it wasn't what the users were looking for. Wendy Schratz, a Sky director with responsibility for E-Experience and development, posted, "Our key objective... is very simple: we want to make our content available on as many platforms and devices as possible -- regardless of manufacturer or platform.

"We have two equally resourced teams that work on app development for Sky Go, one for Apple development and one for Android. However, due to the nature of the Android platform -- in terms of both the variety of operating systems and the sheer number of devices -- the reality is that developing for Android throws up a number of additional challenges when compared to working on iOS devices."

In a follow-up post where the technical development team answered users' specific questions, Sky put the blame firmly on the movie studios. Many Android users were furious that Game of Thrones-maker HBO was able to support all Android 4.2 devices within a week of its rollout, whereas Sky has yet to support any 4.1 device.

"Unlike some other content providers we have a lot of 3rd party content available on Sky Go," the Q&A says. "We have multiple contracts with varying obligations in order to protect this content. For example, Sky has rights to content in the first pay TV window (following DVD release), whereas some other movie services do not, therefore our security requirements are different. We have a very sophisticated Digital Rights Management system which we which we work hard to protect.

"It means we are unable to release one generic app that will work across all Android handsets, and to ensure each handset adheres to our content protection requirements, they do need to be tested individually."

It would be an understatement to say the forum users were not impressed with this. "You've simply taken 5 days to come up with a statement telling us nothing new whatsoever. The only thing you have proved is that you have not heard a word we, your PAYING CUSTOMERS, have been saying for the last year. 'Believe in better'? Practice what you preach Sky," writes KingfisherUK

Android has exploded this year, particularly in tablets, which are arguably Sky Go's natural home. While cheap tablets such as the Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and Nook HD have only come to the UK in the last few months, they've been hugely successful. Sky has been slow to respond to this, but most major media companies favour Apple's App Store over Google Play.

Platform problems

Is it harder to develop for Android than iOS? The BBC thinks so -- it had to twist Adobe's arm to put Flash Player back on Android so it could continue to support its iPlayer app there. 4oD doesn't have an Android app at all.

But because Sky Go doesn't support Jelly Bean, some customers can't upgrade their phone to the new OS without losing the service. "My phone is asking me EVERY 3 HOURS to install updates and I have to cancel this because of Sky Go," complains user Mighty Red.

Unfortunately for infuriated customers, Sky holds all the cards. No other service provides as many of the latest movies in a pay-monthly package; no other service has as much live sport. As user Alistair+Burns says, "It was only the coverage of the rugby today beyond the final whistle without an ITV style leap to adverts that kept me from ringing up and cancelling my £720 a year subscription."

It's clear though that the number of Android users feeling ripped off by this lack of support is increasing. The thread has over 500 comments and more users are joining the forum specifically to complain, with some reporting that Sky's call centre staff have suggested they buy an iPad to access the service. It's a simple equation: when its lack of Android support begins to outweigh the value for money it provides, Sky will begin to lose paying customers.

The worst part is rooted phones are also blocked from Sky Go. I've no idea why? There's no way to enable free content or circumvent Sky's control of the app so what's the problem?

Typically pathetic excuse from Sky. My S2 took an absolute age to get Sky Go. Then I updated to ICS and the Sky devs took around 3 months to bring it to ICS.

The worst devs in the app community are working for this company. It's pathetic really!!

This is not a problem for me as I have lost my S3. But before I did I was so annoyed with this app. First thing that annoyed me was it took yonks for the app to be compatible with the S3 then when it was the app does not work on rooted devices the app only works on quite high end phones (well it did when I had the S3) and I bet over 50% of these users had rooted phones and therefore were unable to use the app. I pay for sky and j had paid for the phone I should be able to use the app no matter what android phone I have and no matter what I do with my phone!

It boggles me how independent devs with small budgets can provide apps for 3/4 of Android devices, but Sky (BBC & many other mainstream media companies) can't.
I suspect it's the same problem Facebook had, all their staff are given iPhones and iPads, except Sky just isn't bothered about Android.

I agree with anon 15:44. Sky News advertise Apple products; their presenters are always holding and playing with iPads, and they make some content exclusive to the iPad but not any other tablet out there. Im pretty sure product placement is illegal on news programs.

Why can't a huge company do such a simple task of creating an app on android. Other companies like BBC and others can make apps that work on all devices and versions. The only reason they are not working hard to sort this out is because it's to do with the fact that people who buy iPhone are rich and will make the iOS app better to favor them.

Has some clever clogs managed to enable HDMI-out from Sky Go from rooted Android devices? If so the Sky developers will have to keep re-coding their app for all the Android devices it supports each time there's a new release of Android.

No HDMI out support from Sky Go is annoying. I can only guess it's to prevent people using mobile devices as an alternative to multi-room or dodgy pubs using it adhoc instead of paying the massive subscription fees.

I removed Sports and Movies from my Sky package in protest .... and managed to get an additional £10 a month discount as an apology.

Sky's attitude to Android development has been farcical and it doesn't look like things are going to get any better.

The problem is, Sky has made repeated arguments for why it's difficult to support Android, all of which have been shot down in flames. The screen resolution argument and media player incompatibility argument are the most obviously flawed ones, I'm no coding expert, not by a long stretch, and I could see that. Why is this Sky's fault? Shouldn't android users be lobbying google and their phone manufacturers to stop the fragmentation and build a coherent platform that is easier to develop for? Don't we all have a choice when buying a platform? The same apps aren't all available for Mac and Windows - you buy the platform that best services YOUR needs to run the applications of YOUR choice.

It's just too expensive. With freesat+ HD improving in quality and the ability to get many video on demand apps like TVCatchUp (or wherever the unnecessary capital letters crop in!) STV player and the BBC iPlayer etc. on your phone and tablet. I could very much see us cancelling our roundabout £1200 a year subscription. It's just not worth it. There has to be more to life than having 'the HD channel's' or the ability to access Sky Atlantic. I'd miss the Sky channels and maybe the box office. My Dad would miss the sports! But really, I couldn't be bothered either way! :D

anon @18:19. That would be a fair enough comment, if it were more difficult to develop for. If you want to see all the arguments Sky makes for why it's so tough, and the counter arguments, go and look at the thread. XDA developers were able to adjust the original app so that it ran on all android phones, only for Sky to actively block all phones except the chosen few from using it. So we know the app works, but Sky won't let it work.

Anon @ 1831. I take your point - but there must be issues associated with concerns over piracy or licensing of content that are harder for Sky to overcome in a coherent way on what is a less restrictive eco-system. I still maintain that choice of platform is a user decision, and that we have to live by our choices - in the same way that I made a bad call with HDDVD :) Although I'm an iOS user, I made that decision not based on a love for all things Apple, but because I was buying a platform that I wanted to have the broadest support. Reality is, iOS does tick that box. I was sorely tempted by the new Win 8 Mobile hardware, but couldn't bring myself to switch to that austere app environment (or austere at least for the apps that concern me). Had I bought Android or Win 8, and it didn't work with Sky, I would be frustrated, and would join the rally for Sky to support it, but at the end of the day I'd have to live with the choice I'd made. It's not Sky's obligation to provide App support for every platform. It is the users' decision as to which platform they choose to enable the apps that they require. That said, if support was touted and I made a buying decision on that basis, I'd still be annoyed (at MY decision) :)

XDA did fix it. Then Sky spent six weeks putting in a whole bunch of blocks to stop it.
Then Sky accidentally released a version without the blocks, where it worked fine. Followed by Sky pulling it.

Sky have claimed that Android tablets don't have market penetration to justify support.
That they cannot block HDMI on Android so block the application, but are happy to keep the app on laptops even though they cannot block HDMI there either.
That they need to test every device individually and code sky go individually for each handset.
That every Android device has different screens resolutions so cannot produce a single app.
That Google don't release SDK for Google Android so Sky has to wait until updates are commercially available before starting development.
Jelly Bean testing started in July but Sky still cannot say when it will be finished and made public.
Sky also claim that "super connected" mobile users will use SMS for communication and connect to the internet on a mobile device once a month!

Sadly they have been using the same rubbish excuses since February, nothing had changed, and their rather rubbish excuses just insult users and make Sky look foolish.

I have only had my nexus 10 for a few hours but already it starting to annoy me because most of the things I bought it for don't work, in particular Sky go. BBC iPlayer also not working. ITV player is like watching TV through a letter box as won't work on landscape. For those of you fed up enough with sky follow your threat to leave. They don't let you go easily and you may get a discount for your trouble.
as for the nexus 10 If you can wait until it comes available in the shops to see if it will do what you want it to do before splash out.

Odd that Sky Go works fine in Germany on Android devices and tablets but not in UK.
Also odd that Sky+ app plays video on Android Jelly Bean and on Android Tablets, but the Sky Go app doesn't play video because " it's not technically possible to play video on these devices"
Or that Sky is worried about security on Android but allows its Sky Bet applications to work across all Android devices without concerns about user's financial security.
Or that Zee box, owned by Sky, is able to publish an Android app that controls a Sky box, but Sky's own app doesn't do this, again because of technical difficulties and it still needs to be tested.

I think your all chatting rubbish. Not to be funny but android is hard to make apps for. Apple have 3 os'es to make apps for not 10 or 15. I don't agree with sky but this should point out that android needs a standard in at least system requirement for at least a year to year basis to keep a successful audience base. It's a very simple thing to do. Having a successful platform can all come to a end if everyone starts jumping ship at the same time.

The excuse that android is harder to code for is complete nonsense. This is nothing more than taking sides and a foolish bet that iOS is the most popular mobile platform. It's not. I was rather surprised to find that sky go doesn't work on my phone but to be honest, I'm not bothered about it for the simple reason that I loathe tv programming. It is however the only app I am aware off that doesn't work with JB 4.1. That should be enough argument that they are lying through their teeth to their customers.

Netflix? Loveflim? TVCatchup? They all stream TV and film to Android and iOS. Netflix and Lovefilm are paid services so they have security. Sky is obviously keeping something back.

Back in 2006 Sky gave every one of its employees (around 16k?) a free 30gb iPod video (complete with an installed video of then MD Dawn Airey giving a motivational speech about the exciting times ahead... she left not long after), so it's probably safe to assume they have a friendly relationship.

I really struggle to see the difficulty. If it was developed to be compatible with a handful of the highest selling handsets, with knowledge that JB was on the way, why wasn't that factored into the development (isn't the code made available to developers before the OS is launched to consumers?).
In any case, I have an S3 and it updated to JB - in all I have had SkyGo active for a fraction of time when it was on ICS with the phone and a fraction of time before on my HTC Sensation.
I do seem to remember that at one point SkyGo was coming to BB as well, but not seen anything of that.
The easier thing here would not to have bothered. If it was exclusively available for Apple, then there would have been some gripes, but as a commitment was made that it is available to selected Android handsets the situation as it is now is laughable (although iriating!!).
If I am honest, if it worked for my tablet I would be pretty happy (more so than my phone!).

I got the s3 and 7'' tablet because they are new and up to date so I expected to be able to get this app, I got asked to update software so I did thinking it would get better now my colleague who didnt update and is on 4.04 can get sky go fine yet I cant because I 'upgraded' to 4.1.1 and my tablet although its on 4.04 cant get it either?!?!!? SORT IT OUT SKY PLEASE!!!

inaccuracy in the article above-- AMC (which stands for American Movie Classics) and Lionsgate produce Mad Men... not HBO. Just because something happens to be on SkyAtlantic doesn't mean that it's an HBO series... but from that pool you have Girls, The Newsroom, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Treme.... plenty to choose from. Not Mad Men.

This is so stupid. One of the reasons I have SKY is for SKYGO as i'm on the road a lot, yet I can't use it on my note 2! Guess i'm still watching the illegal stream while paying SKY nearly £900 a year for jack s**t.

Also isn't the S3 the biggest selling phone of the year in the UK? how can it possibly not be supported?

This is probably down, like usual in these cases, with some bigwig sat in an office who knows absolutley nothing about the market and how it is running just saying "well we will sort out apple first beacuse everyone has an Iphone" completley on presumption that barely anyone is an android user, when in fact 75% of devices sold at the moment are android.

SKY say they have done research, it clearly ammounts to less than a simple Google search.

This is very poor service from Sky When Android becomes the dominant platform then Sky's existing android users will still remember their own difficulties and Sky's lack of response. I use Android on my Galaxy phone and have no problems in accessing Sky go . However Sky go is not accessible on my Nexus 7 tablet again using Android but a later version. This difference in approach can be little more than a policy decision by Sky rather than a technical issue. That is simply deplorable Sky

It isn't Google that has the problem. Android is open source and people can manipulate it however they see fit (and no, not all people do it for illegal purposes). I personally know small dev teams that are putting content on Android which can be used on a large number of devices. It really isn't hard to put content on Android. If Sky used an earlier version of Android to produce for (say 2.3 and up); it should work on all devices unless there has been a huge change in the way Android works (which I know there are some large changes from then to now). Unfortunately, Android user wanting to watch Sky Go are going to have to wait or make sure their device can use it.

As for the randomer that said Apple is simply better than Android. You're a bit silly for saying that to be honest. They are both good in their own right. Apple is 'simple' to use and you get what you get. People tend to buy Android because the phones are normally a fair bit cheaper than Apple devices along with the fact that you have more control over Android phones.

Android Tablets like the Samsung tab 2 7 and 10 inch, the Nexus 7, and Kindle tabks are outselling ipads 10 to to 1 , due to the exceotional offers on at the moment combined with the fact they are more open and flexable devices (with exception of kindle).
Apples market share and dominance of the tablet market is rapidly shrinking as we will see when the next quarterly sales figures are released.
Pop in to any phone shop, pc world, Debenhams or Tesco extra and they will tell you how sales of ipad devices have plummeted in the last few months.
Samsung are out to make some apple juice at the moment and repeat what the Galaxy S range did to the phone market, this time they are focusing on Tablets.
SKY - 80 percent of new tablers being sold are android , sort this out otherwise it will go from bad to worse for you on publicity front.

Fact is Sky support the minimum number of android devices that is possible in order to claim Android support without bursting into hysterics while their nose grows pokes the stratosphere. Is Android more difficult to develop for than IoS. Of course. It is difficult to test every device/OS combo.

But they only support 11 ( eleven) devices, from 2 (count em, one, two) manufacturers (http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Go/Sky-Go-on-Android/ta-p/690532). Pathetic. Not even the increasingly popular Nexus 4, 7 and 10 are supported. I've not chance with my "who are they" Sony Experia Play stuck on Gingerbread (even though the first drop of Sky Go worked fine even if I did have to use 'unofficial' methods to install it).

l am very uunhappy with sky's low standard of service. I bought a. Galaxy note for my partner, shocked that sky can' be bothered to sort out an app for it. Netflix, lovefilm, I player all work fine. Sky sound like they are in a deal with apple-isn't't that something they should tell us about?

At least Android has a Sky Go app, more than people with a Blackberry device get, even though Blackberry is a partner of Sky Atlantic.

Totally agree about the ludicrous 2 limit for Sky Go Devices. The desire to attempt to limit use by people outside of your subscription you give a logon to is clobbering it's usability for honest people.

Between laptops, desktops, phones, iPod Touches In my house, there are a potential 8 devices that work happily with iPlayer, but only 2 for Sky Go. Even with a multi-room subscription, you only get 2 devices.

Surely someone can come up with a better method to 'shackle' users to your set-top box, to stop you using Gran-dad's Sky Sports subscription for free on your iPad ?

You can get more devices on skygo if you add an additional user to skyid. But that won't help you with the android incompatibility issues.

The sad thing is that they restrict access apparently in case it doesn't work, while people will tell you that it has been side loaded on to numerous devices and there are ways to get around rooted devices (worked fine on my rooted s2 with an app to temporarily unroot).

Perhaps it is more about managing server demand than anything else?

It's not just Sky Go, although that's biggest issue. There's also the fact that every 5 minutes Sky News says "see more on that on the iPad app" with exclusive content on there and no equivalent on Android tablets. Think there was a similar thing with their F1 coverage.

I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 with 3 back in Spetember and out of the box the Sky Go App worked just fine with the ICS system supplied.

A few weeks later the OS upgrade downloaded and installed bring the handset up to the JB system and bam........would not load at all.....just the stupid sorry stopped working message was displayed. Made sure this was a report at least twice a day as I had found the App useful and was using it.

Yesterday 11/12/12 an update was installed and now the App is working fune again.

As many have said it seems strange that small developers come almost instantaneously but a large communications Co such as Sky take several weeks to catch up.

Just cancelled my Sky Sports subscription. The excuses have been going on long enough. I will not be pushed into getting an I-collection of stuff by Sky. I hope more do the same.

I am a Sky customer at home and in my son's apartment. Now it would appear that the nearly £800 subscription is of. no use if I use my Samsung android tablet that I had for Christmas .
I ask my self where is the extended customer services.
I feel like changing Iverson to Richard Branson and. Virgin.
I don't know why I don't as the internet is faster.
Shame on Sky. for locking tablet users out.

I have a samsung tab 2 for christmas and after I find out its not compatable?!
Wish I knew, not fair as I am a paying customer of sky .
Feel that other companies should have the same alounces for their devices.

I remember when this app was launched for Android devices, I was so excited as I have Sky's full package and had just upgraded my phone to the HTC Sensation XL. I checked the website, and the forums. Was told "Support for the Sensation XL will be available soon". Well that was about 15 months ago........... WTF are Sky playing at ?????

I would like to know why Sky have decided I cannot use the app on my rooted HTC Sensation - it is not enough to just throw a message saying not supported on rooted phones, we should be given an explanation.
I pay Sky £70/month and I feel I should have access to the service, especially since they spammed me about it being available.

My Sky Go app my Nexus 7 has been brill until yesterday when I assume the upgrade happened!!! I believe a 'new' upgrade to be released overnight will cure the problem - here's hoping!!

Sky will regret their complete ignorance of the situation, I hope everybody decides that the situation with their monopoly on this Sky go leads to their demise, Virgin and companies renting Sky go are perpetrating the situation. Time to vote with our feet methinks.

have used sky go a lot, when I got my archos g9 80 I hoped to be able to use this to watch sky. they can do it for some makes( one thinks this is a financial agreement between them so you have to have a perticuler make).maybe wrong but as with apple they do pull some weight. complete lack of respect to what the customers needs. a note to sky - look what happened to comet stores when they did not take on the shopping online to full affect.

This is still the case. Half way through 2013 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 are not supported. Sky provides no real solutions to its customers just standard answers. Sales of these tablets are increasing, why are they not fast tracking the development of the app?

ive got an archos 101 and after i have spend 250 on a tablet i find out that sky go is not supported im really disappointed i pay a lot of money for a sky subscription and i cant even benefit of itis not fear like that they should enable sky go for all the android software the low it should be fear for everyone just like everyone pay their subscription im not happy i think i should switch on virgin that support my tablet
