Sky Go is a new way to watch Sky online or on your phone, and it's free

Sky Go is go. Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV, the two services for watching Sky away from your telly are being combined to form Sky Go -- and it's free to all Sky customers.

Sky Player lets you watch Sky online, and Sky Mobile TV lets you watch on your phone. With the introduction of Sky Go there'll be just one service for your phone, tablet, laptop and computer, which is free to all Sky subscribers.

Sky Go will show live programmes and catch-up TV from across the board of Sky channels. That includes all five Sky Sports channels, ESPN, Sky News, Sky Movies, Sky News, Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, MTV, Disney, GOLD, Nickelodeon, NatGeo, History, Eden and ESPN.

On your computer or laptop you can choose from 30 channels to watch on the go. Tablets and smart phones are limited to slightly fewer stations, but can get all the Sky Sports channels, ESPN and Sky News -- presumably so you won't miss the match when you're being dragged round the shops on Saturday afternoon. More channels will be added to the phone and tablet line-up over time.

You can register two devices to watch Sky Go, whether it's your laptop in bed or your phone on the bus. Sadly you won't be able to watch when you're on holiday, as rights issues prevent overseas streaming.

On other devices such as the Xbox 360, you'll still get the Sky Player's functions but it will simply be called Sky.

Sky is obviously thinking hard about technology beyond the TV. The Sky News iPad app is one of the best apps we've seen. Sky is also planning to make Sky Go available via the Cloud, the public Wi-Fi network bought by Murdoch's mob earlier this year.

Sky Go gets going on 6 July, and is free to all Sky subscribers. If you aren't a Sky customer, you can use Sky Go for £15 per month.

is that 2 registered per account or per sky boxes? I have 2 boxes so will that allow 2 each?

I use sky player for the xbox every day for hours! It has an absurdly large selection of movies and quite a few tv shows. You can also watch live tv which is great. At the moment your subscription allows you one pc/laptop, and one xbox device.

I notice they have dropped the number of devices to a pathetically stingy two.
I have a laptop, iPhone, iPad, and so does my husband. So how is two devices a helpful number? It won't even cover one of us, and if they follow the rules as they are now, you can only switch devices once a month. This makes the service next to useless.

Jesus. Some people just aren't pleased with something free! Choose your 2 most useful devices and pipe down. Maybe you can buy additional devices for a monthly fee like multi room. Which while I'm thinking will reduce in subscribers for households which may be happy with watching on iPad in other rooms of the house.

Up until now, it was more than two devices - five, I believe. So they are not giving something so much as taking it away and renaming the service in the hope we won't notice.

So does this mean that you can watch the sports channels online even if you don't subscribe to them?

This is definitely marketing spin. As an avid user of sky player, I will have much less choice and functionality than I do now. I currently have one main laptop as lead device as I am away a lot, plus home PC so I can watch live TV when in office, and similar for my wife. Given that we pay over £60 a month for sky subscription, I'm not impressed.

Works out perfectly for me. My son has the sky player set on his Xbox and the 2nd device is my Main PC. As I never use sky player on the PC it makes much more sense to use it on my iPad.

Will this now mean that you can watch sports on both of your registered devices as currently if I go to watch sports or movies (premium channels) it will only let 1 registered device access these channels at a time.

Most of sky channels are full of ads and american rubbish tv, as for watching sports perhaps we should all be doing and not watching and the obese problem wouldn't be a problem. Switch off your tv and do something usefull

It's limited to two devices because it's now free for mobile too, the mobile service used to be chargeable. If you have an iphone, ipad, laptop etc great, but why do you need it on them all? Can you think of a time you'll need to watch it on all those devices at the same time?

You pay for your subscription to sky, i.e. the boxes under your tv. If you use the mobile service so much cancel your home service and pay the £15 a month, save yourself £45 a month as you're clearly never in anyway, or lying.

So where's the app that was promised for yesterday?

This is a real pity - the new Sky Go is a load of rubbish if you have a PC. Before this was built in to Windows Media Center and was probably the best app around. Now I have to log in numerous times and then resize the viewing window and it will not work with a media remote control - pointless.
They need to listen to their customers and not become Apple lemmings - we dont all have an iPad or iPhone that we want to watch Sky on
Get with the plan Sky

You are supposed to be able to register with sky to get sky-go online on a monthly basis for a monthly fee. The trouble is, you can register but it is IMPOSSIBLE to get sky-go. There is a 'monthly ticket' you are supposed to be able to purchase. But you try it, just you try it. The sky money-grubbing, money--grabbing, globe-darkening, sport-destroying soul-less machine marches on and on and on.
