After months of sleepless nights and anxious waiting, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is finally a real device that you'll soon be able to acquire in exchange for precious, precious money. But how is the Galaxy S4 different from the Galaxy S3?
Similar design, but subtle tweaks
Not a lot has changed from the S3 in design terms, and Samsung has stuck with the rounded, pebble-shaped style that it debuted last year. Visually the S4 looks a lot like its predecessor, but has a flatter back and a neater, more uniform shape.
Despite rumours to the contrary, Samsung hasn't ditched the home button, opting to keep a mechanical key nestled 'neath the S4's screen. The bezel surrounding the screen has been slimmed down, meaning you'll be looking at more screen and less plastic. The S4 is also both slimmer and lighter than its forebear, despite being larger overall.
Available colours have been given a shake-up, and while the S3 originally came in blue and white, the S4 comes in more traditional black and white -- or 'black mist' and 'white frost', if you prefer Samsung's daft colour conventions.
Bigger, higher-res screen
The S3 was no slouch in the display department, but the S4 takes things to the next level with a 5-inch, 1080p Super AMOLED display. Pixel density is dramatically increased from 306ppi on the S3 to 441ppi on the S4, meaning onscreen text and images should look razor-sharp.
Eye-control and hover gestures
Samsung always goes big on bespoke software, and has crammed the S4 with eye-control features such as Smart Pause which pauses video when you look away, and resumes the clip when you look back. Eye-tracking gestures are in place, while you can scroll through content by tilting up or down.
As if that's not oddly futuristic enough, you can control the S4 by hovering your hand over the screen. This works in the browser as a magnifier, or you can wave your hand in front of the phone to accept a call -- handy if you're driving as it goes into speakerphone automatically. You don't have to hold your hand too close to the phone to make this hovering tech work.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung will update the Galaxy S3 to bring these new features to its older mobile. Fingers crossed though. The S4 contains even more bizarre apps -- check our in-depth preview for more.
Tonnes of camera features
Samsung has followed the lead of HTC and Nokia, pumping its new smart phone full of camera tricks, including a dual-shot model that takes a shot with both the rear and front-facing cameras, combining the two shots into one image. The front-facing snap will be placed as an inset, so you can see your reaction to taking a photo as well as your subject. Useful... maybe.
Sound and Shot takes a picture with 9 seconds of accompanying audio, while Drama Shot combines burst shots into one image, giving you multi-stage action photos, handy for capturing pets or feats of sporting prowess.
Cinema Photo creates a static image with specified bits of the picture continuing to move (think Cinemagram) and exports this picture as a .gif, while Eraser Shot removes people from your photos. Yikes.
The camera itself has a 13-megapixel sensor, up from 8 megapixels on the S3. Pixel count alone doesn't necessarily indicate better quality snaps, but rest assured we'll be putting the S4's snapper through its paces during the full review.
Faster processor and 4G
Exactly what kind of processor you find in the Galaxy S4 will vary depending on your region, with some countries getting a quad-core Qualcomm processor and some getting Samsung's own-brand Exynos 5 octa-core processor.
We'll need to perform our own tests before we know how much more powerful these chips are than the S3's quad-core processor, but as there's still very little out there that can push the Galaxy S3 to its limits, I'm confident this will be one of the snappiest smart phones out there. You get 2GB of RAM thrown in for good measure.
The S4 is LTE-capable, so you'll be able to hook onto the 4G networks that are starting to spring up. This is something the S3 didn't manage, but its sort-of-sequel Galaxy S3 LTE could handle.
Different enough?
So, a host of crazy apps, a slightly bigger screen and more power under the bonnet -- but is that enough new tech? For the most part, the software on board both the S3 and S4 will be broadly the same, as both mobiles are running versions of Android Jelly Bean that have been smothered in Samsung's own TouchWiz interface.
The design is very similar, which could prove divisive, as many Android fans weren't too chuffed with the plastic casing that ensconced the Galaxy S3.
Do you think the S4 is a good enough update, or is Samsung getting complacent? Let me know your thoughts in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

I'll stick with my S3. This is a Iphone 4 Vs 4S situation... I'm getting worried that Samsung will follow Apple's footsteps!!! :-/

You have no idea what your talking about, this is no Iphone 4 Vs 4S situation. The S4 is miles better then the S3 in terms of hardware and software. I'm guessing you making that comment based on the look of the phone.

Yeah, I have an old blackberry bold and I'm debating between a new samsung or apple phone when my contracts up. Samsung seems to be more powerful and have a few more features, but the iphone seems better as far as being a music player and apps and it has some quirky features too. This really does look like a 4 to 4S style upgrade, but for someone like me, it's way better than what I'm using. Still have 10 months on my contract so I might wait and see about iphone 5S or galaxy 4lte/5. Always worth waiting with the way technology keeps improving by almost 50% each year.

All the most popular apps on ios are on android, and theirs an app that copies the exact music UI app ios has on android,

You might have just sold me then lol. I guess I know less than I thought. I always enjoyed the ipod touch interface so that's awesome too. Although I could probably be more open and try out other music players.

What's changed?
Higher screen resolution.
More powerful processors (may be of dubious value in the end?)
Features and apps copied from other manufacturers.
Headline novelty features which are really of little, or no value.
Different coloured plastic.

I'm glad the Galaxy S4 looks symmetrical compared to the Galaxy S3. I am impressed by it, the thing I like the most was the case with the screen, I think it'll help save a lot battery, I hope someone develops it for other phones, I'd love to have one for my phone which had abysmal battery life.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 00:55
Just so you know LTE stands for long-term evolution, which is basically the radio that receives the 4G signal. As this phone already has 4G they wont be bring a 4 LTE out. I think it looks good going to have to play with it first to see if i will get it. Loving my Nexus 4 so might wait until google bring out another phone which will be soon i hope as the only let down is the lack of 4G which is a pain.

I'm learning so much today. I know alot of people are waiting for the nexus 5. How are the google phones? They don't seem too different from the samsung phones outside of the glitter back lol. It probably helps that it was released after the S3 and iphone 5 too, but if it has some cool features, that would be interesting to know. I also hear the HTC One get name dropped alot. Maybe I should just come back and re-evaluate the top phones next year since I can't keep up outside of maybe 2 companies lol (I find myself more interested in laptops and gaming console specs when I am looking into technology).
anonymous 15 March, 2013 01:52
I think ill stick to my GS3 ;)

"This is a Iphone 4 Vs 4S situation" well they forgot to show off the built in pinball machine with the spinning thing and balloon animal maker... maybe they should make it taller and skinnier and add a letter to the name....wait a sec... "V" yepp a new letter just like that fruit company
anonymous 15 March, 2013 02:40
I think if they reverted back to something more like the S2 form factor and included a bit more of an OS upgrade or more ram or just a little more then it would be an upgrade worthy of the new number. If you go back, 4 to 4S actually had many similar improvements (like with the processor, camera and the voice implementation among other things). Obviously this update is a little better with the decent screen improvement and the gestures though. I am with other people when I say I expected more change with all the hype (the hype was probably to help the changes seem more phenomenal). The device is certainly an evolution and not a revolution, and since my upgrade isn't for almost a year, I have no problem waiting to see what phones are released Q4 2012 to Q2 2014.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 02:42
*little more in general
*Q4 2013
Man, I'm not feeling editing, but that comment makes more sense this way.

this is like iPhone 4 to 4s upgrade.but without a better antenna.(4s never dropped signals like 4),giving 5 mp(8-13 vs 5 - 8) upgrade instead of 3,4 new cores instead of 1(4 core -8 core vs single to dual core).and some software tweaks like siri translation or crap
anonymous 15 March, 2013 03:48
I think the S3 is enough to daily purpose. There is no need to upgrade to S4. If you want to buy S4 just for extra and meaningless.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 05:00
meaningless? Are you SURE....??
anonymous 15 March, 2013 06:24
Seems to me that people disappointed with black of real change are only talking about the design? And here's me thinking that its hardware and software that really matters, not superficial things that make me look cool.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 06:54
Most of those software "improvements" are just superficial too.
There are so many gimmicky features on this phone that most people will never ever use, except for maybe trying some of them out once or twice, before never bothering again.
As for hand gestures; how many times will it misinterpret an innocent movement and jump to something else?
I can see that being a complete PITA.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 08:04
Did they even mention the word "Android", or "Google" ?
I think "Android" was mumbled once, or possibly twice in the entire show.
There was no mention of Google services or Google Play, with all the focus being on Samsung software and the Samsung Hub.
They are definitely setting up for a future switch of platform to their own Tizen OS.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 08:28
@anonymous 15 March, 2013 08:04
I noticed that too.
They are starting to soften up their fans for a change to Tizen.
roblightbody 15 March, 2013 09:14
I love my S3 but have had to fit it with a massive 4600mah battery to get acceptable battery life. When are the phone manufacturers at least going to give a big battery as an option? I like to USE the powerful features the phone offers me.
anonymous 15 March, 2013 13:25
why is it a comparison against the 4s ? why not the 5 ? i thought the s3 was a comparison against the 4s
anonymous 15 March, 2013 20:45
Samsung are releasing some amazing new features. Question is, are they going to sell all the stock that's stuck in their sales channels. They're having the same issue with TV, check out the ridiculous discounts on the old sets http://www.tvsonsale.co.uk

I strongly believe that the S4 is a good enough update. I have S3 and Lumia920. I much like S3. The Lumia 920 is very complicated to use. The Lumia 920 has a very noisy issue, when make a call the screen goes black and could not hang up!! Unless push up a bit to release it from the case!! because the hell sensor does not work under cover !! I did not experience any problem with S2 or S3. So the S4 will be great too.
anonymous 16 March, 2013 05:37
i think the big point is people who fall too quickly for a handset are pissed they are locked in a contract and now over paid. FYI S3 goes for $0.01 on A**zon now! And by holiday season S4 will probably go $75-$100 as the S3 did. And by April next year same thing will happen when S5 will come out. Same goes for Apple =round and round. However these new gens are peaking at awesome features, where the S3 and Iphone5 are not peak performers. So just wait till sale season and get an awesome "phablet" cheaper than what impulse buyers got and paid for the S3 & I5

Android junkie quote of the day "It would change my life to be able to use my phone without actually touching it. I could eat way more Cheetos." = S4 air hand & eye controls
anonymous 16 March, 2013 20:16
most comment confusing other people because they are confused. the deal is very simple:
if I want to buy a phone I have to check the speed of the CPU, the Higher resolution screen and the Battery life of daily basis. the iPhone 5 lost with Samsung because the CPU, Apple is using just Dual Core but Samsung is Quad core and that makes Galaxy S3 double speed than the iPhone 5. the Galaxy S4 is higher with the three most important features to buy a phone: CPU Quad core 1.9GH, Resolution of 1080p with 441 ppi and Battery of 2600mah. a LOT better than S3
