Samsung's flagship phone for 2012, the Galaxy S3, has just been announced, and I've had some hands-on time with it already. Watch the video above to see what I thought, and come back a little bit later to see a more in-depth video. Below is most of the video in text form for those that prefer reading to ogling.
The key thing is the 4.8-inch screen. This is half an inch bigger than the screen on its predecessor, the Galaxy S2. The screen resolution is 1280x720 and it looks bright and colourful with crisp fonts.
The S3 is running Android ICS, which as usual has been heavily customised with Samsung's Touchwiz interface.
One of the main things Samsung is pushing is the camera. The rear snapper packs 8 megapixels, and it's super-quick to take a picture. Samsung says the camera will automatically tag your friends and share the photo with them, providing you have their picture stored with their contact details, although this feature wasn't finished on sample I saw.
Burst mode lets you take up to 20 photos in one go and something called 'select best shot' takes eight photos and recommends the best one.
Elsewhere, you can record 1080p videos and take still pictures simultaneously, although only at 6-megapixel resolution.
At the front is a 2-megapixel camera which works with something called 'smart stay' to keep the screen from dimming while you're looking at the phone.
Inside is Samsung's own quad-core chip running at 1.4Ghz. Samsung says this uses a lot less power than the dual-core processor in the S2. Now combine that with the high capacity battery and that means the S3 will last longer away from the mains than the S2, or so Samsung says. There's no final figure for battery life yet, but I'm told to expect roughly 13 hours.
The S3 feels really good in the hand - nice and light and it's just 8.6mm thick. There's a physical home button on the front and a couple of touch-sensitive keys that are a little close to the edge for my liking as I kept hitting them by mistake, but you'll get used to it.
Other cool features include a video player that you can move around the screen. This means you can browse the internet or text without breaking off from the video you're watching. There's also something called S Voice, which is basically Samsung's version of Apple's Siri, so you can say 'what's the weather like today?' and the phone will go away and find out.
With S Beam you can share files over Wi-Fi with another Galaxy by tapping the phones together, and you get a free 50GB Dropbox account with every S3, which impressed me.
The S3 will arrive in 16, 32 and 64GB versions, and there's also a microSD slot for a further 64GB of memory if you need it.
The best thing of all for me is the removable battery, so if it dies you can replace it with a new one, unlike many other high-end phones.
The HSPA version of the S3 is going to be available in Europe first towards the end of May, then in the other countries that use the GSM standard. An LTE version for the US will follow, but not until December. Sorry America!
What do you think of the Samsung Galaxy S3? Let me know in the comments below or on our Facebook wall.

iPhone who? ... lol i cannot wait to get my hands on this!!!
anonymous 3 May, 2012 19:32
Why is so much being said about how thin this thing already? It's basic. If anything is rolled out, its surface area gets bigger which its depth decreases. Extend it to a 5.3 inch screen and knock another 0.5mm off it's depth. Volume is still the same. Jeez. Stop being impressed by it's thickness!
And how is this in anyway better than the iPhone?
Unless your hands are huge, you have to readjust when wanting to move from the bottom of the screen to the top. It's simply not gonna sell like the SII for that one reason. Ridiculous move by Samsung...
iStevieC 3 May, 2012 19:35
go away iPhone lover! (you always get a horde of fanboys slating off stuff that really if they dont like then why are you here?)
anonymous 3 May, 2012 19:50
To check out 'competition'
Still can't answer what makes it impressive? Surprise surprise
We'll just wait till Jelly Bean comes out... Or sorry when it's available - about 5 months after release wasn't it? Hmm...
Ridiculous move number 2 - Samsung still layer with TouchWiz.
When will they ever learn!
anonymous 3 May, 2012 19:51

anonymous 4 May, 2012 00:19
why do these ignorant people always think everyone is copying Apple when it is actually the other way around. Apple did not create voice control so how can they sue samsung for that. Also, who would I trust, a company who have made fantastic TVs for the past 30 years, with a proven track record (Samsung,) or a company who are gonna release there first TV in the market (Apple). Hmm....hard choice. This obsession people have with Apple, I will never understand it.
anonymous 4 May, 2012 03:24
Haters GON' HATE.
anonymous 4 May, 2012 04:14
I happen to think that every samsung since the vibrant have been better than Iphone. I owned them all and I do happen to prefer samsung. With that said, this S3 does not seem all that different to me. Okay so talk about the camera: 8mp...please you cant really tell the difference between 5mp and 8. Oh its bigger...well heck I can just go and buy the galaxy note. It will have ICS...please I can get a custom rom. Nope unless they are giving them away, I will keep my S2 thank you very much!
anonymous 4 May, 2012 04:26
siri is apples version of googles voice activation
anonymous 5 May, 2012 16:40
This thing is gonna bomb... Especially considering how much Sammy are gonna spend on marketing.
High end superphone made of plastic?
Unnecessary quad-core.
Simply FAR TOO BIG - most analysts set a minimum of 5 inches to become a tablet.
TouchWiz present.
I really can't think what makes this different or better than the SII or the iPhone, the 2 leading phones right now.
They missed the chance to make anything ground-breaking or innovative, while simultaneously missing the chance to really improve on anything that exists already.
Disappointing, and I think it's gonna show through sales. Don't expect to see the market leading headlines of late this time next year.
But hey, what do I know, I own an iPhone! Lol.
anonymous 5 May, 2012 19:28
It's soooo awesome. Only less than month to survive lol
anonymous 5 May, 2012 19:30

anonymous 5 May, 2012 19:51
I am just waiting to get my hands on it
anonymous 5 May, 2012 19:51
ugly?? coz it was designed by a team of lawyers since Apple feels threatened by competition and is just looking for anything rectangle to sue!!! s3 is still gonna be hugely popular coz of its hardware! plastic or no plastic... plastic survives falls... besides end of the day your not gonna be keeping it on a display.. you are gonna use it. so screw what it looks like. this phone is a beast!

All you people complaining about the plastic back it's plastic because he back of phone is removable for battery and micro sd card. If it wasn't removable it wouldn't look plastic because you wouldn't know like htc and nokie lumia. iphone 4s, htc one x, nokia lumia, droid razr, razr maxx all are non-removable back so that's why they don't feel cheap. It all up to you what do you want removable battery and sd card slot or non-removable back cover that looks like GREAT HARDWARE...
anonymous 5 May, 2012 21:43
mmmmm..... i can't wait more longer!!!!
anonymous 6 May, 2012 02:39
Btw the camera is 8MP on the back recording Full HD video and 1.9MP on the front capable of recording
720P HD video.
Not 6MP and 2MP stated on the article. Did you check before publish on the internet?
anonymous 6 May, 2012 02:40
Too large, but the features are great! :)
P.S. Go away iPhone lovers! :)))))
anonymous 6 May, 2012 02:44
Hey, I don't like the one button, but its a nice phone. I'm still happy with my i896 over the i4 choice. Soon many apps and customizations...... only issue is Rogers is a bit of a pain to hack. Lmao. Btw to you apple lovers... the iPhone is made to be easy, so any h8tr can h8.

Go back to black!!! Nice phone but still like my black S2,would buy a white or blue S3 ever....
anonymous 6 May, 2012 04:26
This is to compete with 4s... And i'm sure it will like how s2 took over sales of iphone... Apple was enjoying the market share until the release of s2 and now it knows the competition and so it will work harder on iphone 5.
Both are great mobiles but samsung is more user friendly than iphone in terms of what you can do with the phone...just for that one reason i love to get s3...
Let meet here for s3 vs iphone5... Competition is good so both apple and samsung lovers will get mind blowing gadgets....
anonymous 6 May, 2012 05:57
I m a big fan of Samsung love this mob.can't wait to have this in my hands too!!!!
anonymous 6 May, 2012 10:52
I am mibile fanatic especialy samsung d best features of all times....samsung always make a diffirence...i cant wait to have it...awesome
anonymous 6 May, 2012 13:44
If no one is going to buy a over 5 inch screen as a phone then how did Samsung Note sell 5 million in the first month or 2? By the way the Note is a 5.3 inches. Just because you personally don't want want don't act like you speak for anybody else.
Anybody who uses Android knows it is the best system. The things you can do on it Apple dreams of doing. Apple cannot even multitask after all this time. They just got around to copying Android notification system but they still messed it up. They copied Android Google Voice and added an annoying robot voice as a sales gimmick.
You cannot customize anything and people spend all that money on a Apple just to have Apple tell them what they can use. IPhone users are sheeple who follow. Android users lead.
anonymous 6 May, 2012 17:37
me quedo con mi nokia N9
anonymous 6 May, 2012 21:20
Apple??? O0ps I ate it :P...
Yeah Android + Samsung ... it is an amazing combination and S3 is yet another example of that... I mean seriously all the Siri fans... please go and have a look at stonage age Nokia phones.. those have the same thing exepct an Apple Logo on it :P...
oh and as far as the size is concern, we have not imagined to have 4 inch screen phones a couple of years ago but now we are used to it.. :)
Thanks Samsung..

For all those who say high about Iphone, pls answer the following.
For iPhone 4 with out Jail Break / Installous
1) how many calls details are available in Call History - For a busy phone user, by after noon, he cant get details of person who called in the morning.
2) you call someone using iphone and if the call is in Wait, you will not get information that there is call wait. You will think the other person is not picking up the call and the other person will get irritated as to why we are holding the line even after it should be showing call wait....
We buy smartphones / high end phones etc all for primary reason of making and receiving telephone calls.....
Galaxy S2 rocks.... Waiting for first hand usage of S3.
anonymous 8 May, 2012 14:00
LOL , so its like they are copying both HTC one X Camera ( burst mood , video and still pictures) ...PLUS the iphones siri ....waay to goo samsung :D
with a stupid design...that my Grandma could have come with .
i dont give a crap about removable batteries...as they suck !
i prefer my phone to be just one block...as it makes it feel steady and good.
seriously after seeing this phone " which is a huge DISAPPOINTMENT to me" i would go with the HTC ONE X .
Disappointments : 1 - Pintile Screen... 2- Stupid design ....3- touch wiz ( which i hate) ...4- a Hard home button ..no multi-option button.
Good stuff : 1- the front cam with the new thing that prevents screen going off.
things i dont care about :- 1- SD card slot ( as i wont need more than 32 GB in my phone )
2- Removable battery .
anonymous 8 May, 2012 17:32
I'm sticking to my amazing Galaxy Note.
