Samsung Galaxy S3 specs leaked: quad-core, 1080p screen, ICS

MWC 2012

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the most keenly awaited smart phone since a certain iPhone 5 failed to make an appearance last year. Well it's one step closer to becoming reality, as we have a spec list right here. And the big news is it has a 1080p screen, quad-core processor, and Android Ice Cream Sandwich, according to BGR's sources.

The screen is 4.8-inches across, pegging it just shy of Panasonic's massive Eluga Power. The Full HD resolution means 1,920x1,080 pixels, so movies should look amazing on this thing. It also has a 16:9 aspect ratio, making it perfect for films.

Inside is a 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor -- it's a bit of a surprise Samsung didn't go for a third-party model. Ice Cream Sandwich brings features like face unlock and the ability to group apps in folders. It's 4G too -- that doesn't mean a lot for us Brits just yet, but it could do before the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

It's no slouch image-wise either. An 8-megapixel camera sits on the back, with a 2-megapixel front-facer. That's pretty high resolution for video calls, so you'd better check yourself in a mirror before making one.

The Galaxy S3 also has a ceramic case, according to the spec list.

This thing has been the subject of more rumours and speculation than a Hollywood A-lister. It's rumoured to be just 7mm slim. It was originally thought to be given an outing in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, though its reveal has since been pushed back. It may well go on sale in July. It's so keenly awaited we've collected everything you need to know about it in an enormous guide.

What do you make of that spec list? It's not exhaustive, but is anything missing? What else would you like to see? Let me know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page. And for all the MWC news, stay tuned to mwc.cnet.co.uk.

Unless your watching a 50inch screen or larger the human eye cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p so on a tiny mobile phone screen isn't this overkill. Still sounds like an amazing phone. The balls in the iPhone 5s court now

It depends on how close your eye is to the screen though. That's why on the 50 inch TV, it can be hard to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, because that's assuming your sitting far away. Move close on even a 32inch TV, and you'll notice the difference.

I wonder if there will be anything left of ics by july after apples attempts to stop it! If they do succeed then surely it will delay the s3!

Is the Battery life significantly improved over te S2 s the killer question for me. 7mm thin and those high specs worries me that it will suffer a very short battery life

It's gonna look pretty stupid with that big 4.8 inch 16:9 ratio screen...

I would like to see much better battery life. More robust, so tougher glass and case. I hope there is motion stability for video. That is something that you really need on a phone.

I know every detail that has been rumoured regarding the Samsung Galaxy S3. I WANT IT BADLY!

No onboard IS would be a deal breaker!

Fast NFC is a must.
It would be nice to see them introduce a better scheme for holding tickets electronically on it - something that sellers will trust.

I'm sure the camera's pixel resolution will be improved. They had already show cased a new camera sensor capable of upto 16 Meg in October. The screen size is irrelevant.Samsung will the screen with a much smaller border especially by dropping the hardware buttons. For instance, if you put an iPhone next to the s2 it only slightly larger, but the screen is much bigger..

i think this is still rumour and not official no? i've seen other sites saying its rumour - either way i think screen size is getting silly. 4 or 4.3 inches is big enough i think. how about decent connectivity to the tele so we can play games on big screens or play our movies on there? the specs for these phones is better than my freaking laptop, yes its old! :) so would be good to just be able to hook my phone up to the tele and surf etc.

A 4.8 inch screen is a bit too much. For me and most of the people I know, a 4.3 inch screen would suffice. Who would want to carry around a 4.8 inch slab in their pocket, no matter how thin it is.

My upgrade is due on March 1st. Go for S2 or wait for S3 is the question.

In response to the comment about the 4.8 inch screen this is a definite for me I would even go for the note. I almost bought the 5" Dell Streak but I preferred the supler amoled of the original galaxy s.

When displays on mobiles get good enough you shouldn't need to ask people what resolution is your screen or mine is better. A display will be a display. Simple as that!

Screen is pretty much the most important aspect of the phone besides the processor. People whine about screen size, but you get used to the large screens quickly - and you don't want to go back to anything smaller...

for the love of any god you prey to i hope this thing doesn't ship with touchwizz and all the crap "hubs" the S2 came with....

ICS is out; I have it on my new Transformer Prime. And the rumour mill has it that the i5 will have more res than the S3.

On a screen thats 4.8 the viewing difference may be miniscule yes, but HDMI ported TO a 50 inch and you have yourself the reason why the technology has moved there even if COMPLETLY incapable for human eye viewing at 4 inch.

720p display would be ideal, 1080p is just overkill and may even negatively impact battery life and/or performance. I'm sure it will look beautiful but it would barely look any better than a 720p one.
