Nexus 4? What Nexus 4? Samsung appears untroubled by the introduction of Google's mega-cheap own-brand smart phone, proudly boasting that its Galaxy S3 smart phone has hit the 30 million sales mark.
Samsung boss JK Shin calls the company's quad-core marvel a "runaway favourite" on the corporate site. The 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 hit the significant milestone in 157 days -- impressive compared with last year's phenomenally popular Galaxy S2, which Samsung says mustered a more modest 10 million sales in its first 150 days on sale.
The news comes just a few days after Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Note 2 had shifted 3 million units. That's not as impressive as the S3's 30 million of course, but a sign that even Samsung's slightly quirkier smart phone is finding an audience.
The figure likely refers to the number of Galaxy S3s shipped in total, including those bought by retailers, so it's possible there aren't quite 30 million Galaxy S3 devices nestled in the pockets of ordinary shoppers yet.
For those of you wondering how many humpback whales would be represented by the weight of 30 million S3 devices, Samsung's put together the following infographic. That's whaley impressive, Samsung. Almost unbaleenvable, in fact.

Meanwhile, Samsung is considering ditching its current logo, as part of a corporate identity revamp, our sister site CNET News reports. Here's hoping the Korean company can craft something as Earth-shaking as Microsoft's recently unveiled, life-changing logo.
Will we be celebrating 50 million Galaxy S4 sales this time next year? Or has Google harpooned Samsung's cash cow with the introduction of the £239 Nexus 4 smart phone, which offers S3-beating performance at half the price? Tell me in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

Didn't CNET report this before?? The Nexus 4 murders the S3 in every way except for storage and 4G models, which aren't an issue for most people. I expect the S4 to be priced below £250 for the 8GB version, and includes an SD slot, 4G and lots of gimmicks.

I can't see that happening. I'm sure Google are heavily subsidising the Nexus 4, which obviously won't happen with the SGS4.

Wishful thinking CaptainPicard. The reason the Nexus 4 is so cheap is because Google sells them at cost and makes money from their numerous other services. Samsung cannot and will not try to compete on price because their only source of profit is the sale of the devices themselves. Instead they will continue to offer the S4 as a "premium" device that is hopefully good enough to justify the price tag.

@CaptainPicard We did report the sales figure before, yes. Luke was so beguiled by the whale-related infographic that he forgot all about that. Apologies for the duplication.

No probs Nick. And anonymous 1&2 I was thinking Samsung would have found a way to cut the production cost of a phone by then, like arranging special deals with parts suppliers. The S3 was a wild success, part suppliers will be more competitive.

Google have acted with its relaunched Nexus range, because they've spent too long sitting on the sidelines watching Samsung making all the money out of Android, while they themselves can only hope to claw back some of the huge amount of money they've spent on Android by selling content from their embryonic Play Store and from search income.
Google need Samsung to feed that business model, but they have had to use the Nexus brand in an attempt to accelerate the growth of content sales. They weren't getting that from Samsung's or any other vendors sales success.
It'll be an intriguing conflict now between Google and Samsung . A wierd paradox of competion and reliance on the other company.

Thing is. I wouldn't want to buy a nexus 4, reason is because its made by LG and I hate phones made by LG. Had nothing but problems with LG phones in the past.
Going to stick with my Gnex until the next nexus phone appears. Hopefully its made by Samsung or Sony.

Apparently LG Nexus is likely to hit all the android giants especailly Samsung a hard blow. Don't know how Google has happened to offer it for such a low price. Time for Samsung to play really smart.

I'll wait to see all the complaints before going for a Nexus 4 - as someone above said, the fact its made by LG is sure to guarantee problems

If the Nexus 4 (and any successors) starts to hurt Samsung too much, they may shift more of their smartphone efforts in the direction of Windows 8 Phone.
They've already got the Ativ, an uprated W8P version of the Galaxy S3 and there are bound to be other models to come later.
At the end of the day, Samsung will have no particular loyalty to the Android OS. For them it's just a useful vehicle to help them sell products. If the next vehicle that comes along gives them a better deal, they'll jump on board without any qualms.
