Samsung's 'next Galaxy' phone -- sure to be the fabled Galaxy S3 -- will be powered by a quad-core processor, the South Korean tech monster has confirmed.
The Exynos 4 Quad chip boasts a mind-expanding four cores, and according to Samsung will be clocked at speed over 1.4GHz, CNET reports.
"Already in production", Samsung boasts, "the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smart phone that will officially be announced in May."
That May date doubtless refers to the 3 May Samsung event right here in London, where we're nigh-on certain to get a glimpse at the follow-up to the wildly popular Galaxy S2. Only seven days to wait now -- hold tight gadget fans.
I wasn't expecting Samsung to send its flagship phone into the wild with anything less than a seriously muscular chip -- and every rumour so far has pointed to the S3 sporting quad-core tech -- but it's good to get confirmation from Samsung itself.
The S3 won't be the first phone on the scene with a quad-core processor -- the HTC One X is already on sale and flexing its muscles.
A potent processor means snappier gaming and smoother video, but as my oh-so-wise colleague Natasha Lomas points out in her review of the One X -- finding apps that exploit the potential of these powerful new chips is a tricky business.
As such, Samsung's next effort will need more than just data-crunching prowess to win my affection. Here's hoping it delivers in the design, display and camera stakes too.
What do you want to see from the Galaxy S3? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

If they don't bring something very special to the plate next week, it will be a huge disappointment to a lot of people. They have to improve all aspects of it, specs, software and definitely a major change to the poor plastic design, which is just plain ugly. If your paying £500 for a phone, you would expect a better material to be used. If they don't do this, it will just be like the iphone 4s all over again. Just a poor upgrade and just like the Apple fans were called sheep, Samsung fans will be nicknamed the droids for not caring any more about design, just silly quad cores which aren't even been close to being fulling utilised.

ahhh 4 Juice drinkers !
Battery must be pretty good or else it will be as bad as the S2 - which is very average when it comes to battery already.

So it's not going to be as powerful as the HTC One X then. I'm glad I've got that phone then and didn't wait. It'll better be in other aspects like battery life, screen, RAM and camera or it'll be a big disappointment.

If it's a better screen than the nexus it'll be the best screen on the market by far, I've compared my nexus screen to a 4S screen of someone at work and it,s much better, even if they claim higher ppi the nexus looks better...

even better camera, ICS, improved design, use metal back (not glass like the iphone it just smashes) and improved design, 4.65inch 1080p/720p display all of that and this improved processor and it will be a winner.
