Samsung Galaxy S3 pounds HTC One X into benchmark dust

We've run the Samsung Galaxy S3 through a barrage of benchmark tests, with our results showing that Samsung's latest toy is a proper performance powerhouse that manages to beat the beefy HTC One X. Read on, folks, and brace for numbers.

In the Antutu benchmark, which tests memory, CPU speed and graphics, the S3 racked up an impressive 12,112 points, beating the One X, which scored 10,827 in the same test.

A similar benchmark, Quadrant, awarded the Galaxy S3 with 5,289 points, again beating the One X, which mustered a score of 4,904. The HTC One X ran GL Benchmark's Standard Egypt test at a rate of 52 frames per second, but was once more bested by the Galaxy S3, which ran the same test at 59fps -- the same score managed by the frighteningly powerful new iPad.

The 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 even beat Apple's frighteningly powerful new tablet in one of our browser tests. When we ran the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark (in which lower scores are better), the S3 scored 1,498.9ms, while the new iPad and iPad 2 took slightly longer with scores of 1,890.9 and 1,884.6 respectively. The S3's result also aces the iPhone 4S, which scored 2,181.6ms.

HTC clawed back one victory -- sort of. In the Vellamo browser test the S3's score of 2,077 wasn't as high as the app's database score for the HTC One XL, a phone that's not out in the UK yet.

Despite the HTC One X also offering a quad-core chip and a slightly higher clock speed, our tests show that it's not quite as powerful as the Galaxy S3. That could be down to the S3's Exynos 4 Quad chip being made by Samsung itself, while the Tegra 3 processor in the One X is built by Nvidia.

Number crunching aside, my expert colleague Natasha reckons the Galaxy S3 feels slicker to use than HTC's offering, with no lag or stutter as you cruise around the phone's Ice Cream Sandwich-flavoured interface.

It's worth noting that while it's pipped to the post by the S3 in performance stakes, the One X is still a very powerful smart phone. For more on the One X's performance click here, and for more on the Galaxy S3, including test shots from the phone's 8-megapixel camera, observe our in-depth review.

Are you planning on buying the S3? If you own the One X, what do you think of its performance? Sound off in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

Update: The One X didn't fare too well in our battery test either. We fully charged the batteries on our S3 and One X and set them streaming the same video over Wi-Fi, with their huge screens at maximum brightness. After more than three hours, the S3 dropped to 68 per cent and the One X to 31 per cent.

Why is anyone surprised? Samsungs processors have always been the best. Since the original Galaxy S with its Hummingbird processor!

I always think these test should come with performace v battery life comparisons too, whats the point of a fast phone if it's dead by lunchtime?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 25 May, 2012 13:15

This is funny, as a quote from your review of the HTC One X states "Quad-core is overkill for most people". Why has that not been stated as a negative like the HTC One X for the Samsung GS3? I cannot understand why the HTC got 4 stars and this phone got 4 1/2? You also say the battery life on the HTC is bad even though they have fixed that issue with improved battery life and we haven't even had a review of the battery life on the S3 yet.

Luke, any chance you could add something to your to-do list? Would be very interesting to repeat this with some sort of non touchwizzed / sensed rom on each. Are both on the CM9 roadmap?

anonymous 25 May, 2012 13:22

There was a reported battery test on the Stuff Magazine website today that tested OneX vs G3 and with wifi on, screens set to 50% and a video playing, the OneX lasted 4 hrs 51.........the G3 on the other hand, made it to 8hrs 26 - a serious trousers down beating for the OneX!

anonymous 25 May, 2012 13:55

Surely the S3 should at least be awarded the title of "frighteningly powerful"? Or is "quite good" sufficient?

Not surprised by the benchmark results!
But I am not impressed by the S3 design One X has a better design
S3 is ugly & looks like a huge pebble stretched in all directions

Loving the pebble design! Tested this out in Westfield's and the screen is just something else. Seriously has to be looked at the appreciated. I've never liked Samsung's phones because of their TouchWizz but seriously considering it now...

The design issue is very interesting it seems such a "love it or hate it" thing. Some reviewers just blush at the site of it and others almost want to puke. I need to see this thing for myself I will definitely be going by Westfield the last time I went I missed the Samung Rep who had the phone. So I am hoping that the rep will be there when I go in today or tomorrow.

I know this is a bit off topic but i have the s2
and getting the S3 next week, is there a way
of backing up all my games (angry birds)
so i don't have to start from the beginning
again?

Sense is what slows down the HTC One X and every other Sense phone.

Holy crap. I wasnt so much surprised about the s3 beating most of the htc x one stats so much. But never thought it would beat the ipads. Tablets are supposed to be more powerful than smartphones. Well......wonder what the iphone 5 stats are gonna be like. No way will it beat the galaxy s3 in terms of power

Even... Galaxy S3 got twice better life time VS HTC One X

Is anybody going to ask the one thing that actually counts? user experience. I've been a displeased galaxy 1 owner for 2 years. gps didnt work, frequent lagging while typing, and do i even have to mention what a tragedy kies is. I mean who wrote that? Since moving to a htc one x its like going from my atom exec windows phone to my first iphone (3g). I actually care about my phone again because it does what i need it to do when i need to do it. Not being able to transfer a picture over usb through kies after unplugging and replugging 5 times or even more, and being unable to get a gps lock without turning it off and on again just makes it so easy to hate sammy's attention to placing numbers over practical usage.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 08:19

********. Samsungs GPU may be better, but one x still beats it in terms of speed ( htc is clocked at 1.5 ghz while the Samsung is clocked at 1.4 ghz)
The screen on the one x is better too, with a better pixel density.
These differences are so minor that you will not feel or notice any difference, so technically the s3 does not outspec the one x in any real way, just on the benchmark test. Both are great phones and the only thing you should be comparing here is what look and feel is right for you.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 09:43

Your reviews always contradict each other like you cant make up your minds, htc one x review Quad-core is overkill for most people, massive handset won't suit everyone not mentioned as a negative on the s3 review, screen flex is a fault on the handset you had (why mention it). You even mentioned quad core as a plus on s3 review, your reviews are so inconsistent.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 11:17

Why does it say that the HTC One X is overkill with it's quad core processor and it is too big in it's review but in the SG3 review there are no mentions of that in the negative list? Cnet is a bloody joke.

The title of this article is really misleading too, it's not a pounding by any stretch of the imagination. If one phone gets 52XX on quadrant test and another gets 49XX then they are pretty much equal I don't think it makes any difference at all TBH

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 13:45

far to many jelous htc owners commenting on here, made the wrong choice!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 14:33

my htc one x has acheived quadrant benchmark results over 5200, and to be honest the speed of it is better than i need, technology always advances and i'm not surprised that the s3 is so powerful, but it's entirely unnessasary, all the extra power gives you is bragging rights! there is few games out that use the full potential of the one X and the same will be true of the S3. we're getting to the point where technology is more powerful and have more resources the developers can use!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 16:12

Is there some deal CNET signed with Apple where their hardware always has to be described as "frighteningly powerful"!?

Just saying..

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 16:30

Htc one x rules them all... Simples....

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 21:59

`HTC hater.. I don't see where the One X got pounded...Also the quad core is overkill comment has come back to haunt you Mr Westaway

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 May, 2012 22:32

Can I just say that CNET are too heavily biased towards this. How can a Quad Core chip in a One X be too powerful and 'overkill' when it's amazing on the S3? And how can a 4.7' One X be too big when a 4.8' S3 is amazing?

I have the HTC One X and it's an amazing phone, for me better than an S3. It looks nicer, very fast, a great camera and a great screen. It's very powerful, admittedly it lags sometimes but I can't imagine an S3 will NEVER lag! I love my One X but however, there is one phone I would swap it for and I hate to say this and criticising it so badly...an iPhone 4S but in terms of Android, I don't reckon you can beat a One X!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 May, 2012 03:52

The way that this article describes the HTC seems like these people work for Samsung. I have both phones and honestly the HTC performs better in real life. The s3 is also nice but the tests really meaning nothing but TECHNICAL WRITERS NEED SOMETHING to write about, sooooo we have to hear these WACK **** opinions. The ONE X is probably the best phone I have ever used. The screen is amazing at 720 res. And THERE IS NO LAG AT ALL on HTC's beautiful new 4.0 sense interface, quite brilliant. The beats audio are extremely amazing, it's ridiculous how deep the music sounds, every instrument easily heard. Why aren't u writers mentioning this?? Honestly HATERS BE HONEST, YOUR EXCITEMENT LIES ON MEDIA HYPE.FROM A USER WITH BOTH HANDSETS, HTC ONE X HAS MORE FEATURES AND GREAT
BATTERY, I DON'T HAVE TO CHARGE IT TILL AROUND 9PM EVERYDAY AND I USE ALL FEATURES A LOT. THE S4 WILL SURELY MAKE U FEEL STUPID WHEM IT COMES OUT (10 MONTHS FROM NOW).HTC ONE X WILL STAY DADDY AT HTC CAUSE THEY PUT MORE THAN JUST PAPER SPECS INTO IT, IT'S LIKE THE PHONE HAS BEEN TESTED TO MAKE ALL ASPECTS OF IT EXTREMLY PERFECT. THE CAMERA IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER USED. IPHONE IS NICE TOO BIT THIS CAMERA TAKES WHAT LOOKS LIKE PROFESSIONAL PIXS ALMOST ALL THE TIME. SORRY S3, HTC CAME OUT SWINGING AND TKO'D YOU!!!!!!! COME ON WRITERS DO BETTER!!!!!!!

my htc one x runs at 5500 on quadrant

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 May, 2012 16:49

As good as the SG3 maybe i cant get over the fact it looks like a stretched out Samsung Galaxy Y..Which is not a good thing..

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 May, 2012 00:12

I've just put up my Htc one x for sale in anticipation of the Samsung galaxy s3. I haven't been to impressed with the one x especially because it's let me down twice now when I tried using the navigation app to find my way. I'm not too sure if it was wholly down to the phone or just T-mobile network messing about. I still have my Samsung galaxy s2 which I bench for the Htc one x but I'm thinking of selling that off too because I never bonded with it the way I did with my previous Htc phones. I hope Sgs3 lives up to the hype though.

anonymous 28 May, 2012 10:06

~300 Quadrant points = pounded into dust? Really CNet?

I've never really liked Sammy's designs. Props to them for shifting so many but they're just not for me - and no I'm not using an HOX before the fansungs rip my head off

To the person unleashing the capslock fury - please calm it down. Just a tad. Writing entire paragraphs in uppercase doesn't strengthen your point, it makes your post hard to digest.

I love my h1x but I'd love it more if the signal was better and the screen didn't flicker like mad. Hopefully when three roll out the next ota update it'll be cured. If not, I'll be exchanging it for a h1x that works as it should.
