Samsung Galaxy S3 on sale in black for Jelly Bean, Halloween

Black is the new black for the Samsung Galaxy S3. The smash hit Android smart phone is available in a spooky shade in time for both Jelly Bean and Halloween.

The black S3 is on sale now at online retailer Expansys for £410, although there aren't any in stock yet. Delivery is 'normally less than five days', and postage is free if you don't mind waiting a few days. We've asked Expansys and Samsung to nail down a date for the new phone and we'll keep you posted on what we hear.

The phenomenally popular S3 is currently available in blue, white and red. It's a quad-core behemoth of a smart phone, sporting a 4.8-inch high-definition screen and an 8-megapixel camera. And it just got even better with the arrival of the software update to Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google's Android software.

If the S3's epic screen is just more movie-watching, game-playing or web-browsing space than your eyeballs can handle, Samsung recently launched the cut-down 4-inch Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, with slimmed-down specs and a more pocket-friendly size.

Since the iPhone reinvigorated the smart phone market, high-end phones have come in any colour as long as it's black, or if you're lucky, white. But now it seems colour is coming back: not only is the S3 available in an ever-widening selection of shades, but the new Windows Phone 8 line-up is fizzing with more colours than a bag of Skittles.

The new Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 are particularly colourful, cleverly matching the colouring of the case with the hue of the software -- and even making a hue and cry about drab phones in adverts.

Will you be picking up an eldritch S3? What's your favourite phone colour? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

CNET reporting wrong again !!!!!
In the UK, the S3 is also available in Brown on the standard 3G model and in Titanium on the 4G LTE model.

That's 5 colours for the 3G model and 2 colours for the 4G LTE model (white and titanium).

Is it the 64gb version? I've been putting off getting the S3 until I can get the 64gb version. They're only hurting themselves by not being clear about when/if it's going to be released.

Can someone please tell me the issue with plastics? As an engineer we use plastics in a wealth of applications. It's durable, lightweight, colours can be integrated with the material, caters for an easy access modular assembly and demonstrates reduced interference with GPS/Wifi signals. This fascination with metallic phones is completely unjustified. There is no single benefit to a metallic housing other than pure aesthetics, with perhaps the exception that metals are generally harder materials. My counterargument would be just don't drop your phone...

Actually, when it comes to dropping a mobile phone with a metal frame/housing is generally worse than one with modern plastic composites. The kinetic energy of the drop and impact is more aggressively transferred from the rigid metal housing into the other materials surrounding it, number one being the glass screens which then easily crack or shatter (very popular problem with a very popular phone) unlike the non-metal frame/housing phones which 'soak' up some of the kinetic energy and therefore transfer less into surrounding materials and reduces the changes of cracking/shattering the main part of your phone... the screen

My wife has had an S3 for about 3 weeks now.
She chose it having been impressed with a couple of her workmate's S3's.

Now she's saying it's too big and cumbersome, and it won't fit in her smaller clutch bags or handbags when she goes out.
She saw and handled an iPhone 5 for the first time the other day and told me that she would rather change to that.
I'll now going to have to see if her phone supplier will do a swap, or it's a case of hard luck.

In the UK I believe the S3 is available in blue & white everywhere, red only at Carphone Warehouse & brown at Phones 4 U. The only places I have seen black advertised for sale are the sim-free online retailers. I wish Phones4U chose to sell black instead of that nasty brown colour. I would have been first in line for it!

Am thinking now of going for LG Optimus 4X or HTC One X+ - I need a new phone and I can't keep waiting for Samsung's irregular updates on it. Shame. I love the look of the Note 2 as well, but it just doesn;t fit in my pocket!
