Samsung has confirmed its flagship phone the Galaxy S3 will receive the update to the latest version of Android, known as Jelly Bean, as soon as October. If you can't wait that long then the 4G version will be available with Jelly Bean as standard.
Samsung doesn't have the best track record when it comes to updating its Android phones, with last year's Galaxy S2 update delays causing something of a riot among its customers. Thankfully it's not mincing its words this time round, explaining to me that "the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system will be available on the Galaxy S3 from October."
During the launch of the UK's first 4G network however, Everything Everywhere (or EE as they now like to be known) indicated that the 4G version of the S3 will be available with Jelly Bean as standard, so there's no need for you to hang around for updates. The 4G version will of course be able to take advantage of the high-speed data promised by the 4G network, providing you're in one of the 16 UK cities where it'll be available.
Sadly there's no firm details on exactly when in October you'll see the update, but try not to be too miffed if you don't see it on the first day. The news came from Samsung directly, so it's expected that the update will be released to SIM-free handsets first.
Each network will need to properly test the update to make sure it runs properly with their respective services, so phones bought locked to a network will likely receive the update slightly later. Indeed, Samsung went on to explain that "Details regarding the availability across network channels will be announced in due course."
Customers on Orange and T-Mobile were among the last to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update on their S2s, but as they're the ones (under the EE brand) who are launching the 4G S3 with Jelly Bean, you'd hope they'd be among the first this time around.
We'll be keeping track of exactly when the different S3s will be receiving the updates. Be sure to keep it CNET UK to find out exactly when you'll get it and can start taking advantage of the buttery smooth transitions, Google Now and other treats that Jelly Bean promises.
In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on Jelly Bean and 4G in the comments below and over on our Facebook page.

anonymous 11 September, 2012 14:06
Cool, now we just need to wait for the further announcement from Samsung (probably around late October time) stating that the update will start rolling out sometime 'during Q4 2012'
Then at some point late in December there will be another yet another announcement claiming Q1 2013 as the roll out target.
And so on............
We've been here before.

Does the 4g version mean the quad core will be changed in the s3 as it was thought that LTE and the Exynos chip did not play well togetjer ?
Dario Crosier 11 September, 2012 16:55
And there I was shelling out half a grand thinking it was already 4G (LTE) compatible.

I'm feeling rather let down with this, the update was going to be August, then the 29th August, then the 31st August, then Samsung say Very soon, (very soon to me would mean a few days).then September, andy day now, now it would appear October.
I get fed up with the carrot being dangled and then taken away again. So - if I wait till October will it then be November, then December, then January - lets have a time and stick to it, no more guess work or speculation. do I risk the warantee and download a leaked ROM, if I have a date that it WILL be then at least I can make an informed decision. What does VERY SOON really mean.
anonymous 12 September, 2012 04:22
Next time, let me get the nexus devices. At least their OTA date will be more accurate.
anonymous 12 September, 2012 11:01

Does my head in, look what happened with galaxy s2 it took forever we love our samsung but pls sort it out they are making a right meal of things. I think it will end up being november

"last year's Galaxy S2 update delays causing something of a riot among its customers. "
If I recall correctly the SGS-II (international version) was the first or second phone (after the Nexus devices) to receive ICS. As usual American carriers were dragging their feet and no doubt with the SGS-III that will be the same.

anonymous 19 September, 2012 13:54
Will this upgrade resolve the problem with dropped connections?
My phone keeps dropping connections and there appears to be no set pattern to the problem. Even when I rest the phone next to the router it still only shows 1 - 2 bars whilst my Iphone shows the full packet. A wonderful phone spoiled I'm afraid.
anonymous 19 September, 2012 19:42
An unbranded phone is one that was original not tied to a network, so even if you unlock it via that particular network it will still be branded to that network just that you can you use any SIM in it..
anonymous 22 September, 2012 01:44
Samsung have more "style" and potential than realised i reckon, the products have never let me down,my ipad is limited but was the in thing to make it simple to get before and sold good, now its time to look at the tech specs not just the so-called macdonalds or mac or jack-all-trades hype.

Nexus 7 doesn't work properly with Bluetooth headsets (JellyBean). Will Jelly Bean update for S3 mean the same for it?
anonymous 12 October, 2012 19:50
Why does it take so long just to get an OS update? One that has been out for months.

That wasn't Jellybean, that was an ICS update. It added camera features, S voice updates and stability. It came out on my mates 02 S3, 3 weeks before mine on Three.
