Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean on O2 today, Vodafone Monday

Look alive, S3 owners -- your Jelly Bean update is happening and you're just standing there like a lemon! The newest Android update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 hits O2 today and Vodafone on Monday.

The update to upgrade the S3 to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has been sent out by Samsung. Jelly Bean hit Three yesterday and arrives on S3 phones on O2 today, both wirelessly and via Kies software.

O2 hasn't specified a time, however, with many users impatiently checking their phones and reporting on the O2 forum that the update hasn't arrived yet.

Then on Monday, Vodafone customers with an S3 in their skyrocket will join the ranks of the Jelly Beans. You can get it by plugging your phone into your computer from Monday and firing up Samsung's Kies software. If that sounds too much like hard work, wait for the the tell-tale notification that the update is available over the air to download wirelessly.

Bear in mind though, Vodafone is staggering the over the air update, so customers will receive it in batches "over the course of several days". That means you may have to wait for wireless download.

The update is available now to those of you on Three contracts. The 3G network was the first to push out the update yesterday, while Orange and T-Mobile are yet to reveal when they will release the update to customers.

Jelly Bean is the latest version of Google's Android software, bringing with it the mind-reading Google Now feature, as well as souped-up notifications and more -- to find out more, click here for our guide to every version of Android. And if you're absolutely desperate to get your mitts on Jelly Bean today, read our warranty-voiding, not for the faint-hearted how-to guide.

Have you received your Jelly Bean update yet? What's your favourite Jelly Bean feature? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

If you're on orange or t- mobile or should I say EE now you're going to probably be the last to get it, orange are terrible at putting out updates, but does anyone know when the jelly bean update is out for galaxy s2 users, any news would be much appreciated...

Virgin s3 handsets are unlocked so you will need to wait for the unbranded version, which will follow all the other carrier releases if the same roll out strategy as ICM is being used (which seems to be so)

anonymous 19 October, 2012 18:20

Quite a lot of the O2 phones are unlocked too, meaning you will have to wait for the unbranded ones to be released (not sure why it's not being done today!)

stupidest thing is that i have unlocked S3 and still without update.. :)

What about HTC One X? I know it's not relevant to this article but I really want to know when I'm able to get it. HTC revealed it will sometime this month but when? The only news I can get is that 'HTC confirm the update will be rolled out this month' WHEN?? I bought the phone sim free and I'm currently signed on to Three on a rolling contract, will this affect when I get it? Tbh, I'm no Apple fan, but I have to admit they are brilliant at rolling out updates. I know there aren't as many iPhones as there are Android, but when the update gets released, its available to be downloaded instantly. With Android, it has to be confirmed by the company first, then it has to be confirmed by a network, then the preference is on whether you bought the phone on contract or sim free. It's so annoying!

I bought a full price SIM free S3 to avoid the wait for updates. What a joke!!! Samsung has screwed the pooch again!!!

If you have a unbranded s3 like me then root your phone people and download the many roms that are out there..why wait..cnet have good guides on installing them.I have wanalite's jelly bean Rom and I must say it's better than ics. .so get your unbranded s3's updated now without having to wait..

I wouldn't worry too much, if other people have the same experience of it so far as me it seems to have reduced my battery life (as I can see so far) and TouchWiz home keeps force closing. When its not doing that though its pretty cool.

Just to let everyone know, I've had Jellybean since Tuesday night on Orange...currently looking at my S3 and the Android version is 4.1.1, expected to be one of the last to get it and it appears I'm actually one of the first!

Still no update for me on 3...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 October, 2012 09:18

It really is all hype, I have had Jelly Bean for over a month from the 'offical leaks' It is exactly the same except that it runs a bit faster. Its no biggie,

I'm currently running Criskelo custom ROM on my S3 (unlocked / rooted).

Does anyone know how the official Jelly Bean ROM compares to the custom ones yet? Any improvement (or degradation!) in performance and battery life?

Been waiting on O2 Jelly Bean update, notihng so far people are not happy O2 said 19th Oct and still no update, it has been said it is just another way of selling more handset's very poor communication within O2 does not surprize me there customer service is very poor. Herd there might be a problem with Jelly Bean battery drain. But should be honest about what is going on

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 October, 2012 20:48

On a unbranded handset here using T-Mobile, no update, really samsung why are you not updating the unbranded handsets yet, pathetic, questioning my choice in this handset, android 4.1.2 is already circulating, and 4.2 rumoured to be releasing at the end of October at Google's event, slow, slow, slow, resisted rooting so far but this is pushing me so close to doing it

redmozzy's avatar

redmozzy 21 October, 2012 01:24

I have found the battery drain to be pretty bad on this Jelly Bean rom hence wondering if the official version is any better

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 October, 2012 12:19

i have just spoken to O2 regarding why i still have no jellybean update - their answer: 'im afraid O2 have not updated this yet and it will be released in a few weeks time, im afraid i cannot give you an actual date however if you give me your email address i can send you updates' ???!!!! wtf!!! angry is an understatement - so another couple of weeks wait for us guys on O2

I wouldn't worry about it. Its not really an improvement to ICS, if anything its worse.

You do get more information about stuff on the drop down box which is good and the standard android browser is more stable is better with text input boxes. Other than that battery life is reduced by about 20%, The Google voice feature is more useless than its predecessor as it always assumes I'm in London when I'm in Devon.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 October, 2012 18:44

T-mobile and Orange or EE, will be weeks or even months, while they mess with Rom to remove the ota update ability and add no real value to it!!! EE(Everything Everywhere) should be little or nothing, now and again.

I'm on o2 and p*****d off with this wait. I still dont have the JB update even though o2 is supposed to have been updating since Friday and it is now the early hours of Monday.
Why is there such a big secret about this update? Why can't Samsung/Android/ o2 be honest about the updates. Samsung said very soon in August, we are now almost 3/4 of the way through October. I think "very soon" should mean a few days, not months.
I phoned o2 today and still was told I had to wait to get an update message from Android, and that they could not tell me how long I would have to wait.
I am waiting for this update as I have intermittant problems with bluetooth which is apparently an ICS problem, also Svoice sometimes crashes and will not work so the phone is not able to do what it should do as a hands free device. This is why I am desperate for JB as I am hoping it will solve these problems. Until then it is not suitable for the purpose it was bought for so I will soon be returning it under the trade description laws and wanting something that works properly with bluetooth and the voice commands, unless the update comes in the next day or 2 max.
What really annoys me is the lack of customer care, also the reluctance to be truthful over the time for the rolling out of the new operating system.
Another new update is coming out and we havn't even got the one before it. This is ridiculous.
Come on someone, just be honest with us.

I have an unbranded galaxy s3 and if I knew that Samsung was going to release to networks first I wouldnt have bothered. This whole saga just highlights the problems with Android and why they will never topple Apple. Why didnt Samsung tell people that this the case so we can decide which it the best option for us. It will definitely be the last samsung product I ever buy that is for sure.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 October, 2012 14:31

Well I won't be updating for at least a month to Jelly Bean, as at least 3 quarters of the applications that I have crash or aren't compatible with Jelly Bean. I know this because when I go back to the Play Store to rate them I see people saying it's not working on Jelly Bean or its "Force Closing".

I don't care about the extra speed I just want all of my applications to work, which they do at the moment.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 October, 2012 23:48

Hurry up Orange!!! No one cares about the other networks

anonymous's avatar

Upgraded last night........don't bother battery drain is the worst i have seen @ 40% in under 2 hours with very little usage. Samsung have screwed S3 users with this update, i'll be lucky to get through to lunch time without a flat battery.

SERIOUSLY NOT WORTH THE BOTHER

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 18:22

I too agree, before I could get 2 days on ICS. Come JB battery barely lasts a day. It's really bad and not worth the update.

Do not upgrade unless you want a fast draining battery!!!

anonymous 21 December, 2012 23:23

does anyone know how to get back to previous version 4.1.1 my battery s messed up since the update...i hate it
