Remember the Samsung Galaxy S3 that exploded in someone's car a few weeks ago? Well apparently it was down to "external energy" rather than the handset itself, according to an investigation by Samsung and a third party.
Samsung revealed the findings in a blog post. So rest easy, all you hot-pocketed Galaxy S3 owners.
Last month, pictures emerged on a forum of a burned Galaxy S3. Dublin-based student dilo2k10 wrote that he was, "driving along with my Galaxy S3 in my car mount when suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone."
The mobile was destroyed and it burned some plastic in his car. "I'm really annoyed," he went on. "That could have been the side of my face or through my pocket and my leg, or set fire to my bed."
Samsung vowed to investigate. The South Korean company contracted Fire Investigations UK (FIUK) to find out exactly why the Galaxy S3 seemed to spontaneously combust. "The energy source responsible for generating the heat has been determined as external to the device," according to the findings and the company found, "the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire".
"The only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner's damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave."
And the owner of the phone was quick to own up. "I would like to retract my original statement," dilo2k10 wrote on the forum. "The damage to the phone was caused by another person, although they were attempting to recover the phone from water this later caused the damage shown on the phone.
"It occurred due to a large amount of external energy and there was no fault with the phone. This was not a deliberate act but a stupid mistake."
So there you have it. Have you had any issues with your Galaxy S3, exploding or otherwise? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook page.

anonymous 8 July, 2012 10:18
Me personally would sue this guy for obvious reasons!
tinajane24 8 July, 2012 17:28
What a stupid man, as we all know people get found out in the end when they lie. there are no excuse for what he said, trying to rubbish the phone, how dare he, trying to give them a bad name ,well guess what it didnt work did it, there are lots of people that I have meet and they are now actually a fan of the galaxy and not the iphone, more and more people are following the tread and getting the galaxy, makes me laugh how people complain about the cost of the phone, I pay 34 pound amonth for my phone with 3 the cheapest on the market, and I get alote more for my money than I did with my other compnay I was with which was o2.
anonymous 8 July, 2012 20:24
What a stupid man ha. You ******* ****. Apple must be behind that man
anonymous 8 July, 2012 22:36
Samsung simply have to sue. This jerk lied from the beginning, clearly trying to screw them for compensation, but also working to damage the reputation of the company. He NEEDS to be sued as a deterrent to other morons who, in the long term, make life more expensive for the rest of us.
anonymous 8 July, 2012 23:19
They don't need to sue him. It would be silly for a corporation as big as Samsung to sue a normal person like the rest of us. He now feels stupid, the truth is out, sure it could have cost them some revenue but those sales will go back up once people learn the truth. The man in question will have to live with himself knowing he tried to publicly damage a company. Suing people who have no money is pointless, you waste more money doing so, paying lawyers and also time. Samsung don't need to damage their image right now. He got what he deserved - humiliation.

How about a massive information campaign on how S3 doesn't explode and some guy just wanted to ruin the good name of Samsung? That jerk goes on to make ridiculous statement on how it exploded in his car and could have been burnt and all that when what really happened was "someone" just put it in a microwave. During the short period of time when he told everyone his lies, could have huge effects on public image.
anonymous 9 July, 2012 06:23
2 things don't add up. The Victim said that he heard a loud pop when the phone was on and against his car dash, burning part of this dash in the process when it happened.. and the last statement he made after the fire investigation.. The Victim said that it was damaged by another person.
Carlo Francis 9 July, 2012 09:58
The burning was due to an external energy source, and was a silly mistake, says the owner....
anonymous 9 July, 2012 13:16
impressive investigative work
anonymous 10 July, 2012 09:06
LOL this guy is clearly an Apple Agent, working to bring down the competition from the inside :L ... what a spanner!
anonymous 10 July, 2012 13:51
So how did he find a microwave big enough for him to drive his car inside??? This is the question I want answered...
anonymous 14 July, 2012 21:12
oh my god anti apple fanboys?! he's obviously not an apple agent (if theres such a thing)
hes a young irish student who paid alot for his phone and dropped it in water not long after owning it. he microwaved his phone it burned. he could not afford another one so he claimed the phone spontainiously burst into flames on a forum for irish people boards.ie. possibly asking could he get his money back or another phone, the story snowballed and became bigger than him.
when found out he admitted fault. go back to your chemtrails theories
