Samsung Galaxy S2 vs HTC Desire S vs LG Optimus 3D vs iPhone 4

Mobile World Congress 2011

We're jaded phone junkies with a pocket full of busted-up smart phones, but even we're excited about what's coming out of this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. After getting warmed up with the dual-core wonders of the Motorla Atrix and the LG Optimus 2X, let us assure you this fight is getting real.

We've taken the hottest phones that are burning up Barcelona -- the Samsung Galaxy S 2, the HTC Desire S and the LG Optimus 3D -- and put them mano-a-phono with the phone that remains one of the world's most craveable, the monstrous iPhone 4.

Samsung Galaxy S 2

We love the Samsung Galaxy S 2 so much, so far, that we wrote a little poem to it. It goes like this: Roses are red, violets are blue, you are slim and powerful, we just hope your software is reliable.

Okay, it needs work, but the fact remains that in person, the Galaxy S 2 is insanely cool-looking. Its huge 4.3-inch touchscreen is stunningly sharp, but the phone remains shockingly light. The size may be a tad excessive for people with small pockets though.

It also promises to be lightning fast, if it lives up to the billing of its 1GHz dual-core processor. But much depends on whether Samsung has sorted out its software woes. The original Galaxy S only fulfilled its potential after a couple of software updates. Samsung's syncing software, Kies 2.0, will also have to come crawling to us on its knees before we forgive the unstable first version of Kies.

Good for: Great looking and amazingly light
Bad for: Software must prove itself worthy

HTC Desire S

The HTC Desire S is too much like its predecessor, the HTC Desire, to inspire love poetry, but we understand it -- after all, why mess with a good thing?

The Desire S fine-tunes its looks with a slick aluminium case. It also sharpens up its user interface with a fresh version of HTC's custom Android skin, known as Sense. It's one of the few successful attempts to improve Android, and it's zippier and better-looking than ever.

Good for: Glossy user interface; sturdy case
Bad for:
Doesn't feel all that fresh

LG Optimus 3D

What is this I don't even. The LG Optimus 3D has dual-core Android power, but whoa -- it also has a glasses-free 3D screen.

It can record 3D video thanks to two 5-megapixel cameras, and as gimmicks go, that's a corker. In our initial hands-on look, the 3D effect looked cool in the right circumstances. A skydiving video seemed to hover off the screen, and an animated 3D pop-up book had layers of depth. There were moments when the animated menus didn't quite do it for us, but you can turn 3D off to play games in two dimensions if you want.

Going by LG's other dual-core phone, the LG Optimus 2X, we expect the Optimus 3D to be lightning fast, too. But the 2X suffered from severe software glitches in our tests. The 3D will have to offer a stable, reliable experience as well as its 3D bells and whistles. The battery life will be another challenge for a phone that's packing so much power.

Good for: It's got 3D, for Pete's sake
Bad for: Look out for battery life and software stability

Apple iPhone 4

Hey there old-timer, welcome to the party. The latest incarnation of the Jesus phone has been around since June 2010, which in phone years makes it eligible for a bus pass. Nevertheless, the iPhone 4 remains near the top of many people's must-have list.

The iPhone 4 definitely doesn't have the screen real estate of the other phones in this battle, with only a 3.5-inch display. But bless its heart, the resolution is amazing. Packing 960x640 pixels into that space means text is so sharp you can cut yourself on it.

The iPhone App Store is crammed with offerings, with Android's App Market running a distant second in terms of numbers. They both offer most of the big brands and top games, but the App Store remains the shop to beat.

Although the iPhone 4 is a fast and fabulous mobile computer, it's not very good at just being a phone. Antenna-gate rages on, and we can vouch that holding the phone in a certain way can cause the signal to drop, and it has an annoying tendency to miss incoming calls, without ringing, even if you're not holding it.

Good for: Apps and screen sharpness
Bad for: Being a phone

The S2 is a clear winner. Blows every other smartphone out of the water. The iPhone is a clear loser. It's not powerful, it's got less features than the others, and it's crap at it's most important function-being a PHONE

@J4M35

I wonder why every other review site chooses the iPhone 4 as the best smartphone currently on the market - including CNET. Oh, by the way did I mention the iphone 4 won the best gadget of the 21st century? I am using an iPhone 4 right now and I can say that it tops any other smartphone out there. I don't also understand you saying it is not powerful. It features 2Ghz processor, same as other phones and the retina display tops any screen resolution on a phone. Now go buy yourself a Nokia and be done with it, I bet that's the only phone you can afford right now.

Your both idiots. I can tell your both fanboys from both sides, just don't get it. What kind of tech lover sprouts bullshit like that, you should appreciate all tech! The iphone is powerful and is not crap, however it doesn't have a 2ghz processor (its 1ghz) and i HATE how iphone fanboys think the only reason people don't buy iphones is if they cant afford it. Now, i agree the Samsung Galaxy S II is the best (amazing phone!! and totally owned MWC) but its only right we compare it to the next gen iphone as the Galaxy S II and & iphone 5 will be actually released at a similar time period (within two months of each other)

J4M35 16 February, 2011 20:45

I HAVE an iPhone 3GS and a 2010 iMac which I paid a HELL of a lot for, so yes, I CAN afford an iPhone 4. I love my iPhone, but the competition is phenomenal, and it annoys me that Apple aren't being innovative anymore to keep ahead. The iPhone 4 is basically a mid-range phone with a high-end price tag!

Anonymous: Excuse me?! I'm an idiot? I 'get it' a lot more than you do, obviously. I never said the iPhone 4 is crap, I said that the phone functionality is crap on the device. Also, the processor is 800MHz, not 1GHz. Oh, and if anyone is 'spouting bullshit', it's you two. The Galaxy S II looks absolutely incredible, and you are right, it did own MWC. If the iPhone 5 isn't something special, and isn't significantly better than it's predecessor, then I will be jumping ship to Android.

Could you people actually stop arguing, I understand everyone likes different products and have their own opinions, but I like my iPhone, if you are going to complain just keep it to yourselves. I did not come here to chat nonsense about which phone is the best or which is the worst, I am just telling from experience that I personally liked the iPhone 4 than the other competitors, is this too hard to understand?

BTW, anonymous: I am no fanboy, the iPhone may be on the expensive side, but the features it has tops all other smartphones - the "iPhone" gave the smartphone industry a huge leap forward back in 2007, where after that date other manufacturers started getting ideas/enhancements from Apple and their iOS in the iPhone.

J4M35's avatar

J4M35 16 February, 2011 23:01

bk93 - I do understand why one would prefer the iPhone 4. The ease of use is unparalleled in the industry, the app store is incredibly vast, offering arguably the largest game library in existence, and the device itself is absolutely gorgeous to look at. But no, feature wise it is actually very behind other smart phones, so don't lie. Yes, the iPhone did help popularise smartphones, but that doesn't automatically make it the best. Also, it wasn't exactly nice to say all I can afford is a Nokia, was it? >:(

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 16 February, 2011 23:18

Just love the way the LG X2 gets mentioned and even though its powerful it still has software problems.
LG will never learn and I will never get another LG phone.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 16 February, 2011 23:46

Well, technically the iphone 4 has a 1ghz processor but it's underclocked to roughly 800mhz. But to be honest nobody actually knows for sure what the clock speed is, but if it was running at 1ghz i would have thought Apple would have said so.

@ bk93 - You say your no fanboy, but then you assumed the the only reason J43M5 could possibly say a word against it was that he couldn't afford one, thats a very fanboy like assumption.

Ive got iphone 3GS on three service provider here in Australia.
few things i like however web browsing, its shocking...too slow..

I tried the sim on another smart phone...i was amazed...
hopefully iphone 5 allows users easy access to music sites to download, at least
it may reduce customers jail-breaking their handsets.

i dunno what to get...galaxy s2 or htc hd2....

weaz1981's avatar

weaz1981 17 February, 2011 09:07

Despite the speed and design the three reasons i wouldn't get an iphone are:

itunes - it seems to mess up my gf's phone every couple of months
no flash - i use it quite a lot on my android
price - it is way more expensive than phones with comparable and exceeding specs

i don't consider myself a fanboy as at the end of the day it's just a bit of metal, glass and plastic and if you have such a connection to something then it says more about you than it does about the gadget

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 17 February, 2011 09:21

The exact reason I wouldn't get an iPhone is the no flash content. Plus it annoys me how many people just have an iphone because it has become a fashion icon and everyone thinks they should have one to fit in. The price is ridiculous, you can buy (in my opinion) phones that are better for free on a decent contract with data, but with the iphone you're still looking at 2 - 300 pounds on top of the contract which i think is rubbish. All just my opinions so don't start having a go :).

@bk93 do you know how stupid you sound? The Iphone 4 with 2Ghz processor???? Really? You are the reason that "Apple Fan Boys" get their bad reputations.

The patronising final line in your "Statement" really just tops it off. Bet you either a) still live at home with Mummy or b) drive a tractor and have just discovered technology

bk93's avatar

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 17 February, 2011 21:47

Sorry But Function Over Features, I Cant See The Need For Over clocking An Android Phone With All Its Amazing Features, But When It Comes To Function, I'd Always Pick Up An iOS Device Simply Because Its Much Easier Too Use Than Any Other Device I Can Think Of.

Totally agree about Samsung Galaxy S 2 being the best of the lot so far... the winning factor for it is the screen size and being slim and ultralight....
I am currently using an Iphone 4 which feels very vulnerable without a bumper but wouldn't trade it with any other phone just for the resolution of the display... none of the phones from this new crop come anywhere near... the day they get it right I will come back... and not to mention the App store... any mobile app will first come to the App(le) store... I still remember how I had to wait for ages to get Angry Birds on my old Android phone... and not the least (the most annonying if you are a techie and need new features as they become available).. about the software updates tricking through the chain take anywhere between 5 to 10 months (from google - to the phone manufacturer - to the network provider - to your phone) and they are not very well optimized for your phone as the hardware is not uniform... agree Apple is a control freak.... but I feel a lot lot more secure using the apps bought from the App(le) store than from the Andoird market.... my 2p :)

iPhone 4 doesn't even belong in this group. It is not new, it was not shown at MWC and it does not have a dual core processor like the other three phones. Someone is totally obsessed.

I have an iPhone and a HTC Desire HD.

For mine the iPhone and its ecosystem is the best devise I have owned. However with all the updates the iPhone have become bogged down and very slow browsing the net, so much so after reading about the HTC D.. HD. I got one as indicated.

The HTC phone, has created a major change in how I view my needs. It is a far cry in speed and some aspects of the software, eg GPS and how I use Facebook. The screen size is perfect and the speed of which the unit offers net browsing is, well no comparison to anything else I have used. Power plus.

The problem is APPS and how they are managed. The Android system is hopeless, say no more!

I must say I am an iPhone fanatic, so much so I have converted many to it,. but with the advent of all these new phones coming on the market Apple need to up the ante on what they will offer in the future. Bigger screen size, GPS, a fasters processor more ram and a bigger flash drive. The same can be said for the iPad!

It is going to be a pain carting 2 phones around unit this happens.

I'v got the iphone 3gs and have had 2 just over a 1 year period due to software faults and dead battery.The Samsung G2 is really powerful but lags in certain areas.LG - AVOID AT ALL COSTS, the company couldn't make a good phone to save themselves lol and HTC do make really good phones but feel the design of the phone lets it down but do have faults.I was looking at the HTC Desire HD but my friend got one last week and has 2 new 1's in this space of time due to software and battery issues (lasting 4 hours lol)

Overall - ipod touch 4g & Android phone. ipod does nearly everything the iphone 4 does for more than half the price and andriod has a better market and get great full games for free e.g Angry Birds. It works out the same but the choice is yours.

It has been at Nokia Service Care three times! I believe my Nokia is very well built which leaves me and many others (i think) that Nokia's operating system is the problem)
I hope to get a genuine, modern and competent phone soon. S2 or HTC?

Here's an opinion from someone who actualy owns both an iphone 4 and a Desire HD.

I love the way the iPhone feels to the touch but thats it. The Android phone does everything better. It's more flexible and usable - Swype keyboard is wonderful. The iPhone's os feels old, and unreliable.

I think if iphone owners where honest, they would agree

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 30 March, 2011 17:53

1. The Iphone 4 does not belong here.
2. Apple ios is the most user friendly out there, but does notmean it is the best.
3. Samsung make the best hardware in the phone industry- but need to focus on software.
4. Galaxy s 2 for the win here, but i reckon the lg will hold its own.
5. The retina display is not the best screen, even though it has the has the most pixels. Deal with it!
6. Iphones are mere status symbols now. Still waiting to be impressed with their 'revolutionary' ideas.
7. Goodbye ):-)

I phones of all flavours have been issued to staff at the company i work at, everybody hates them but we got them on a cheap deal. Poor battery life, bad signal acquisition, appauling web browser speed and truly woeful keyboard. Everyone here has their personal phone too even though the apple ones are free, says it all really. We have a mix of smartphones but 90% are of the Android variety (HTC, Samsung etc.) As a leading technology company with PCB labs and a hard core R&D department we want kit that does what WE want not what posers think is cool. :)

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 11 April, 2011 16:01

For me the iPhone is far too restricting on the customising side of things, I like to be able to arrange my phone exactly how I like it, every aspect of it. It is something I use constantly and I like to be able to change it to suit my needs, not the other way around.

When it comes to the available apps, I don't see this as being a major factor in my phone buying decision. I am not an app crazy person, I don't download a lot of them. I use it more for mobile internet/emails/maps/information. If I want to play games then I will use a console or PC when I get home, it's not something that I feel a need for when am out and about. I really don't understand a need for 50% of the apps out there, a waste of time.

Out of the phones in this article, I think the Galaxy S2 is going to prove to be the best one. From the various articles I have read about it, there is nothing that is really beating it overall. Seems like a very decent pievce of kit and has a fantastic screen size. Really can't wait for it to be released!

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 12 April, 2011 17:15

ok iphone is not great as a phone due to its signal woes.
As for the functionality arguments come on. iPhone has very strict developer submission policies that deliberately limit the functionality. when arguing about UI you are arguing about something subjective - really what matters is the number of interactions to achieve your goal. So until you start quoting figures please stop talking as its just noise. The huge consideration that people need to be making is the ease of developing high quality software. objective C is a very hard language in comparison to java this in itself should be a warning to anyone buying - time is not on the iPhones side unless it radically innovates.
As for the please stop arguing comment?! wtf are you so afraid of your iPhones integrity that you do not want discussion in the comments of an article that COMPARES different phones? You sir are insane.

Moreover phones are computers now, the policy of restricting what you can do with them is one that historically bankrupted many companies around 1999, it seems that apple has not learnt the lesson. A tool is a tool, it should be used in any way appropriate and not restricted by preconceived notions ... that is the opposite of innovation.

Anonymous 27 April, 2011 11:45

The one thing I tire of with iPhone is the users. They constantly tell me how its the best thing in the universe just before whining that they need to jailbreak it so they can customise it and use providers other than iTunes and the app store.
It IS a good product, it looks pretty, is well packaged and has BRILLIANT marketing that can convince countless people that they must have it even if the phone doesn't work! However I do feel that Apple will be heading for a fall in the near future if they don't catch up with the opposition. Other manufacturers hardware is obviously superior even if a huge number of iPhone users don't want to hear it.
The choice is simple, do you want easy to use from the box, good looking and an obvious status symbol... but not quite cutting edge?
Or would you prefer customiseable and kickass with lots of ways to do things that suit you, even if that means taking a moment to learn the best way?
I know which I prefer but I respect the decision of millions to take the easy option and see no reason to call them idiots for doing so. Misguided maybe, but not idiots :-)

the galaxy s 2 is fast and has some cool camera effects.however its ugly and can be laggy.
the htc is made for social networking and is really smooth. however its not got a good music player at all.
optimus 3d is cool, ITS 3D!!. however it is ugly and laggy and who wants a 3d phone ,really?
the iphone has a great music player, HUGE app store and a good camera and the smoothest ,best touch screen there is aswell asfacetime!!!, the downside, not very personalizable.
i think iphone wins. Trust me it might be getting on a bit but it still is well worth buying. The iphone 5 will be ere soon and thats sure to bring something new to the table.

I have the SGS 2 sim free, and it is without a doubt the best phone I've purchased. The phone is super fast. The app drawer is silky smooth, not even the slightest of judder I used to have with HTC desire ( android 2.3.3 custom rom). The TouchWiz 4.0 UI is pretty good, still not good as HTC's, but very smooth with some nifty little tricks. The screen is gorgeous, the super amoled plus, in my opinion, is the best screen technology outhere ( I have compared it to iphone 4). The camera is pretty good, takes pretty good pictures, but the 1080p video recording was icing on the cake. When it comes to web browsing, it loads pages almost instantly ( with flash). Even my iphone 4 owning fanatic mate is jealous.

Iphone4 is slower than most 800mhz, camera quality is low, small amount of ram, doesnt even perform well as a phone with calls ect, not the thinnest anymore, never was the quickest, needs a case on it just to work properly, video an music on it need to be fully licensed, app store is ok but only 19% free apps, android have 51% free apps. Only point the iphone4 has ever has ever won on is thier resolution, which funnilly enough is too high for the human eye to detect. Pointless wadte of time, is it even there? No human can tell! Lol! Apple are pimps who tell you there product is good an not to ask questions, any1 stupid enough to listen to them qualifies as a b##ch! I own a desire hd and im not too happy with that, even tho it smashes apple to pieces, imagine how stupid iphone owners feel holding thier weak defective paper weights, knowing that. Bless em!

why is everyone telling us their phones like their rich not everyone can be rich like you and it doesn't matter which phone you have or what you haven't got at the end of the day its piece of metal which you can use to contact someone - A price is a price doesn't matter how mutter a phone is it is still a piece of metal ---- I might not have a most expensive phone but If i did I wouldn't show off like most people on this website because i'm no geek

You showed us useful screens on the other three phones, but some dork's picture on the iphone - that wouldn't make me buy one. The Galaxy sounds sweet.

i have a galaxy s, yes iam an old timer both me and the phone. i like to look at what i need first ,then what i want and last what is the cost, then i compareand the i phone(3 at the time) fell very badly at the first hurdle, they forgot it's first and most important role that it's a phone and second it is far to expensive. you take a look and make your choice, and it's good to see the competition. shop around

bk93 - why do you comment on peoples opinions - if they say something is bad you always make them feel like their wrong its their opinions not yours - I know your saying your opinion but just make your opinion the way people like it not making theirs wrong and yours right!!

I'm sorry if im wrong and you haven't been doing what i said you have but from the way I see it you are!

Congratulations to iPhone owners. You've finally got a wifi sharing earlier this year. And now, you've got the pull down notifications in iOS5! ..........which android users have been using this for years.

In the "near" future, you will have widgets, animated wall paper, ability to open a file in you phone, file sharing over wifi, opening a video file without passing iTune, better voice control, push a web page or apps to your phone browser from you PC/Mac, open source, customer ROM, overclock, changeable battery......... and more! You just have to be patient!

**P.S. don't blindly trust the articles/prizes/award on the internet, including CNET. They are just one of the marketing channels. To see the truth, you really have to see it with your own eyes.

Hey guys, QUIT with your bitching! It proves nothing! There are ppl out in this world who are barely able to find enough food to eat and all you guys do is moan on about which phone is better and some pathetic nonsense about what one phone has and another hasn't! Phone's from different manufactures have different spec's and ppl will always have their personal favourites, just like anthing else in life. STOP being victims to the marketing machines that get you sucked up into this world of what is best and what is IN and what is OUT. Consider yourselves damn lucky that you've been (most probably) born or raised in a place which can give you opportunities in life which simply don't exist for others in different parts of the world! Take a quick look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs and most of you will be near the top of it. People towards the bottom don't have the luxury to drone on like old women about this kind of stuff. They're simply eager to have somewhere nice to sleep and warm food in their belly. TRY TO PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE!!

Boxing Match

S2 vs iPhone 4 -> S2 wins in 3rd round
S2 vs (jailbroken) iPhone 4 -> iPhone wins in 1st round knockout

Trust me, unless you have truly used a jailbroken iphone 4, You Do Not Have The Right to Judge An iPhone

@ Kazzy

I'm no expert but I've visited a few of these sites and the nerds seem to think the it's a choice between

S2
desire s
xperia arc
iphone 4

Best bet is go in carphone warehouse, play about with these 4 and see which one you like best, then buy from somewhere else

The review was made as a comparison review 6 months ago. As you can tell from the author discussing potential problems, it was written before the release of 3/4 of the phones. Stats weren't yet available.

Well written review. Thanks

I-phone 4 has a great user interface and crisp menu scrolling. <br />
<br />
3-months later, I FIRED it at the floor as hard as I could --- A great way to hangup on someone. Nothing says you irk me like hanging up with a floor smash. Now it's a paperweight-- and I am contemplating the Galaxy S2 --- another iPhone 4-- or wait for the iPhone 5..... In the interim, I am using foul cheap **** that will no doubt earn an honorary breaking; for no particular reason. But wow, breaking phones is great stress relief and I am considering keeping cheap disposable one's around just to help reduce the afternoon cortisol....<br />
<br />
Strangely, I cannot find google references to people purposefully smashing their phones, but surely it deserves it own site.<br />
<br />
just recently threw my Galaxy 5 into to the floor as well... but prior to being crushed, and since the upgrade to 2.2 -- It had seemed a lot faster and not so bad a user interface. Thus I am vexed. So very vexed. Quite vexing it is. So just get a Galaxy S2 for a while or see what the iPhone 5 has? Wait for the mindless sheep to herd and call baaahhhhh baaaah for their iPhones. Most apple will offer a special skin adhesive so that new iPhone buyers can hold it on their forehead for maximum visibility.<br />
<br />
Now I like Apple's product. I like it a lot. But what I really DISLIKE is being seen as an Apple Drone Lackey making up for some shortcoming through an excess flashing of an iPhone4 -- as though it at 8 carat internall flawless pinky ring. or scantily dressed knockouts on both arms.... My biggest resistance to Apple--- is this cult-like phenomenon programming people into feeling cool on account of a phone.<br />
<br />
Feel cool because you mad a few million last year--- or explored a few hundreds holes before 30-- or because you save lives...... not a non-sensical phone -- cool or not.<br />
<br />
So at the end of the day--- it is the people who buy Apple products that compel me back to Android--- evening the S2 is buggy and will irritate me--- and surely rest along side its predecessor - the iPhone 4.
