Some Galaxy S2 owners who shelled out to buy their device SIM-free -- often in the hopes of being at the front of the Android update queue -- are still waiting to get the official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, which Samsung started rolling out on Monday.
Samsung has provided us with this update statement: "Samsung UK is working hard to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our Galaxy S II customers. We are unable to confirm exact dates as the software testing and approval process is subject to several variables, but we are working as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience."
The company did not respond to a request for details of how many UK SIM-free S2 owners have been updated to ICS so far. It was also unable to tell us when the rollout to UK S2 users not locked to a mobile network would be completed. Samsung's original statement about the update only specified a start date -- "the week commencing 19 March" -- which has led to a lot of confusion among SIM-free S2 owners.
Several CNET UK readers have complained they still can't see any ICS update when they connect their S2 to Samsung's phone management software Kies. "Just checked for update via Kies again and as of 13:22 it's still saying no update available, and that I have the latest firmware," said one reader posting a comment today.
"I am a SIM-free owner. Bought my phone through affordable mobiles with contract on Three but still no update, I have checked every day but I am now getting bored," wrote another.
Many S2 owners are especially angry that mobile network Three has been able to rollout the ICS update, seemingly before Samsung itself has rolled it out to all the UK's SIM-free S2 owners.
"It's Friday 23rd March and SIM free users of the Samsung Galaxy S II (SGSII) are still waiting for the official ICS release," said another CNET reader who contacted me directly. "Three UK branded phones have already received the update, which means they've had time to get it from Samsung make their modifications and release it. This makes it seem ludicrous that Samsung cannot get a release out to un-branded phones, especially when some people could have spent ~£500 upfront in order to get their hands on such a device.
"If the problem is that there is bugs in the software and Samsung are wanting to hold fire for a while then why don't they just announce that to everyone? Communication is the key here, I'm sure people would rather hear that they're having to delay it due to bugs that have cropped up rather than just having to second guess what is going on," he added.
Many readers have also complained that Samsung has not given a more specific timeframe for when they should expect the release.
"It is pathetic to see there is no news on update for unlocked SGS2, Samsung could have at least released a statement. Do they not care about customers who bought the phone outside a contract of have an unlocked SGS2 from their network provider? What a shameful way to manage such a major update!" yelled one reader posting a comment.
"Samsung should not have announced the release if it did not plan to stick to it," railed another irate S2 owner.

I got bored of trying and have just been checking on a morning and evening now to see if the update has been released.
I don't mind not having the update at the moment as its not life and death but I am writing a web application and would like to see how it functions in the new browser, suppose that will also wait. Lets hope something happens over the weekend but im starting to think it will be the middle of next week now at best.

Good article :) Finally it's being acknowledge. Be interested to see if Samsung respond to yourselves at CNet.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 16:46
This is a bit embarrassing.
It sums up, as clear as day, what do don't have to put up with going with the boys from Cupertino.
We love the freedom of our Androids, and these types of event are the flip side of the coin.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 16:47
Thanks for this article - I'm SIM free (with Tesco/O2) been waiting all week for some information. As is usual with these things, may be best to wait until others have found all the bugs before upgrading anyway...!!
dj9928 23 March, 2012 16:57
Not impressed by how Samsung has handled this, Its the total lack of any communication that's the worst part, and how can the networks get it out before Samsung themselves.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 16:58
First with my i8910, then with my i9000, now with the i9100 - I've always knew Samsung were terrible with their update schedule, but with their consistent failure to deliver on software updates to the people who shell out premium money for their devices, it doesn't surprise me loyal Samsung owners are starting to sniff up what other manufacturers are doing this year for their upgrade.
If I kicked my dog in the balls every time he brought me my slippers, do you think he'll continue to bring me my slippers? My balls are sore now Samsung, so I'm going to start bringing HTC's slippers now.

Also any news on ICS for HTC sensation owners?

And I'm also going to look silly by posting three times because I pressed refresh.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:02
I just followed the super easy guide on Cnet and loaded my phone with the Odin version. It's great and circumvents those idiots at Samsung. HTC One X looking favourable next time given Samsun's lack of interest/communication.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:06
It wouldn't be a problem if they hadn't published a date to start the role-out, leaving unlocked users assuming they would be at the start of the queue. But since they did, it would be nice to see some feedback to all the questions rather than the same old rhetoric about working with the networks - surely this should have been done before announcing the date. It makes me think we might be at the back of the queue, after all the networks have tested it.
I have never had an iPhone, but at least when Apple issue a date for an update, that's the date you see it, regardless of carrier.
Natasha Lomas 23 March, 2012 17:06
@Choccie Milk It's a pun on a Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet, using the exact wording that Shakespeare used with one crucial exception: it substitutes 'ICS' for 'Romeo'. This pun highlights the fervent desire S2 owners are feeling at this transitional moment in the S2 upgrade schedule. If you would like to read the Shakespeare quote in its natural habitat I suggest you consult the 1623 First Folio Edition: http://etext.virginia.edu/etcbin/toccer-new2?id=ShaRJF.sgm&images=images/modeng&data=/texts/english/modeng/parsed&tag=public&part=2&division=div1

An epic public relations disaster for Samsung. The PR department should all be sacked!
Choccie Milk 23 March, 2012 17:15
@Natasha Lomas Don't worry I know that and it's a good title. I just have a bit of an obsession with correcting people with that particular quote when they think it means "where".
What I find strange is that 3 has managed to start updating people before Samsung it doesn't really seem to make sense.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:16
Well done chaps for getting Samsung to do what thousands of us have failed to do - spill the beans. Did you have to use thumbscrews ;)
Samsung really are pants. Won't be bothering with them again. HTC next time for me.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:24
How do I go back to Gingerbread 2.3.5 on t mobile uk? I have LPB version of ICS and its good but I cant use Kies to update now, I need to go back to the stock!!
Any help or links to the official software would be much appreciated.
Natasha Lomas 23 March, 2012 17:28
@Choccie Milk The quote has to be seen in its full context of Juliet's yearning for Romeo. Sure it's literal meaning is about why he has to be who he is -- not someone from her own side of the political divide -- but the subtext is of her desire to be with him, and therefore 'where' is also implied, especially if you consider how many theatrical productions have Juliet lean out over her balcony in a show of looking.
It is also possible to construct a literal interpretation -- if ICS on the S2 was not ICS but some other piece of more easily acquired software then S2 owners would not need to yearn so much for what is proving to be a difficult-to-acquire update but could just go and download the more easily acquired software.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:28
When companies behave illogically then I usually find its worth looking for revenue streams you might not have considered. I suspect the truth is that 3 paid for an exclusivity window on the ice cream sandwich update. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. Samsung has made it all ten times worse by not engaging with its customers. How hard would it have been to tweet "Not today" ?
Choccie Milk 23 March, 2012 17:31
@Natasha Lomas
I think I'll give up and say your logic is definitely sound. I don't think I'll question your titles again :P
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:33
I have purchased many Samsung Devices and now I wont no more. Scr*w you Samsung, You reap what you sow and Samsung have sown many bad seeds this week. Samsung is a lame duck in a Pond of Alligators.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:34
What a way to manage a key update for "Smartphone of the year" !
anonymous 23 March, 2012 17:46
i got a message on my unbranded sgs2 saying a software update was available, but when i go to update it i get no update available. so close :)
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:06
Samsung is losing all of it's popularity built by S2 "smartphone of the year" as it contnues to frustrate sim free customers with delayed update as usual. Such a huge company & not at all serious about customer satisfaction !!!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:36
Samsung are customer awareness and service is awful - i have been waiting for fault correction since december - i am thinking of returning my phone and an HTC
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:37
Last year HTC was a runner in updating to gingerbread this year Sammy is dragging they feet on ICS for sim free device.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:37
Samsung could help matters by changing the "You have the latest firmware" to something like "no updates available".
By Samsung stating someone has the latest firmware they are clearly lying to us - it's not the LATEST firmware 4.0.3 is, but rather, there is no update currently available (but why?!)
Sim Free - no update as of 18:36 GMT.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:42
I paid a substantial amount more for a sim free gs2 because I knew from experience that networks are typically terrible at update schedules, surely the manufacturer would be on the ball. But it seems not, Samsung already had one false start with updating, other countries have their updates, even here the Three network does! There is no possible excuse for not releasing the update.
This may seem like a small issue to people, and of course in reality it is, but I paid money for a better service and now I wish I had saved myself the cost and bother. Samsung don't even treat their customers with enough respect to inform them on what is happening, thank you for your patience.. seriously, you aren't doing us any favours Samsung you have ran out of time, we pay for your product and so are quite right to expect it in good time.
I have decided rather than switch to Apple, my next phone will be a Nexus. There isn't much between top range phones now, but at least with a Nexus I know I will receive the service I want.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:42
Disappointing to say the least. I run an SME and if we adopted Samsung's comms strategy with our existing clients, we'd be out of business in a month. Why they can't communicate a realistic time frame for SIM free phones is beyond me. They will certainly loose business and reputation as a result of this tawdry approach and frankly, they deserve to.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:48
What I don't understand is that Samsung are saying that the update is being rolled out to Sim Free customers in phases but nobody seems to have it? Unless they are doing 1 user per day I don't think anyone has it as certainly nobody on the internet is saying they have received it (unless they are on 3UK of course).
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:05
just a couple of points...
W/c stands week commencing
This is amazing pr because everyone is talking about it. No such thing as bad advertising
Why would you want ics with samsung's bloatware on it. I flashed revolution remix rom and have a pure ics which is 5 times faster than what you are waiting for.
Keep complaining though because is good brand awareness for phone of the year
Sent from my s2 with pure ics
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:17
@ anonymous 23 March, 2012 18:42 I'm afraid I think Nexus are made by Samsung ...
@ If mine wasn't still under warranty I'd be happy to do so - previously had an HTC HD2 which I flashed from WM to Android - but as it is, best to wait for the official update.
Samsung could have avoided all this bad publicity if they'd just kept customers updated - there's still not a word from them on their official twitter feed -if CNET hadn't managed to pin them down we'd all still be in the dark.
If samsung do have a PR dept, they need sacking.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:23
@ anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:17
Yes the Nexus is made with Samsung, and I don't question Samsung's phone making abilities, but the updates are handled by google and so the Nexus range is very promptly updated.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:23
The actual saying is "no such thing as bad publicity", and it's been disproved time and time again, especially where customer service is involved.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:36
i only wanted the ics update because of the way it looks but it does,nt look any different to gingerbread cos of touchwiz, so i just opted for installing go launcher and the ics theme. phone works great, and now looks like ics. samsung can keep its forever promised but never delivered bugged ics.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 19:37
as luke westway said before that this is pretty much letting samsung down. if apple can update all there o/s easily enough to there phone's. it showing up samsung pretty badly. know i have an s2 and i've been with samsung for a long-time there phone's never let me down. but as we are pushing into a new era of mobile device o/s must be upgraded to keep up with moving tech and customer demands. know because of the lack samsung is showing with the update with the ics for galaxy s2, ive been considering to move to apple because all my mates are happy with there iphone and thats never let them down thats with the phone and apple the company itself. for myself i got a gaalxy s2 because the deal you got and its considerably cheaper than apple, but service is on a slant from samsung.
"samsung buck-up or lose customers"
anonymous 23 March, 2012 20:03
I really cannot understand just what the issue is with releasing the sim free version ,!! i am starting to think there has been some backhand deal (financial perk) from three to samsung to have exclusivity for a week or so. :-)
failing that it is Really Really bad PR for Samsung, one that will have repurcussions, maybe not in the thousands but certainly hundreds of tech aware users that will probably think long and hard about future purchases.
I for one will certainly look a little deeper and at other companies and phones in the future , and i was a die hard samsung stallwart , recommending to all and sundry ,but this fiasco has certainly changed that.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 20:13
Im glad someone finally stuck up for the sim free uses out there thank you
anonymous 23 March, 2012 20:21
I have a sim free s2 contracted to 3 network but no update here either therefore it must surely only be any 3 branded s2 locked to the 3 network getting this update.
I have not heard from or about anyone who has got this update on a sim free s2.
The galaxy s2 phone will soon be loser of the year phone unless samsung get their finger out.
Hey ! Maybe South and North Korea have started chucking bombs at each other hence the reason samsung is saying nothing.........not heard anything on the news though !!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 20:35
Flashed the latest EU ICS Rom using odin in about 3 minutes and I now have ICS goodness on my sim free SG2.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 20:47
well this sgs2 will be my LAST EVER PHONE phone from samsung was going to get the sgs3 when it came out,,,but after all this? NO WAY,,HTC from now on
joebhoy 23 March, 2012 21:08
i have a sim free s2 from carphone warehouse and im with 3 yet still no sign of ics !
my phones firmware says PDA:KI4/PHONE:KI1/CSC:KH1(CPW)
can anyone tell me what/if this means anything at all please ?
the ironic thing is i originally had a three branded phone when i upgraded last may but over xmas i had some over heating problems so carphone warehouse replaced my s2 with an unlocked one which i thought was a wee bonus !!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 21:09
Ok i flashed ics using odin . and i was having problems with my WIFI . and setting up hotmail account aswell.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 21:12
Had exactly the same experience with my Samsung Wave, and now with my S2 (both bought unlocked). Do Samsung deliberately go out of their way to p*ss their customers off?
anonymous 23 March, 2012 21:40
I suggest everyone email Samsung customer support. Hopefully a flood of emails will get some action http://www.samsung.com/uk/info/contactus.html
anonymous 23 March, 2012 21:48
To the few comments who think there is no such thing as bad publicity. Yes there is. I have a sim free GS2 with Three Mobile and after this debacle I will definitely look at Samsung's competitors, including Apple for my next phone.
I hate to admit it, but this simply does not happen with Apple and the seamless nature of their products and releases puts Samsung to shame.
Samsung has a lot to learn about how to handle customer care and if they aren't careful they'll be completely dominated by their competitors.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:03
Samsung has one guy with one phone testing all regions of ICS who in turn has to upload all roms via 56kb telephone line. LOL
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:14
Guys, Samsung is counting on the fact that once they release ICS to everyone, all will be forgiven and forgotten (at least by the time people are ready to upgrade their phones again). I'm pretty sure that is what is going to happen.
While Sammy keep churning out great hardware, people will keep risking the PR and customer service nightmares.
At the end of the day, it is the poor communication and customer service we can't stand. The product still remains pretty damned good.
As a champion of the Android cause against all my iPhone-loving friends, this IS bloody embarrassing though!!!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:17
1- blo-dy FARCE !!!! BOTH BY SAMSUNG ABD APPLE IPHONES AND DRAMAS MEAN MALICIOUS OVER SOCALLED GODDAMN PATENTS AND SKY HIGH PRICES OF HANDSETS !!!
BLO-DY NETWORKS OVERCHARGING AND LIMITING DATA USAGES ON THE HANDSETS MEANT FOR INTERNET ON THE GO !!!!!!
AND NEXT SOME GODDAMN SCUMBGS SHALL PATENT MOON STARS SUN WATER !!!!
THIS IS 2012 AND THESE SCUMBGS ARE BEHAVING LIKE GESTAPOS HITLERS GREEDY ARROGANTS !!!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:17
My main hope for ics is that when it finally arrives on my s2 it will vastly improve the abysmal wifi performance that I and seemingly most other s2 owners are suffering! Smartphone with regular wifi dropouts?.....yeah, very smart!!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:29
Samsung need to realise that they have a DUTY to provide us with these updates and inform us on progress.
Sure we don't pay for the updates, but do you think Samsung would be able to charge anywhere near the price I paid for my sim-free gs2 if it wasn't an android device?
We are paying for a quality android phone, that means proper upgrades as well. Samsung are not doing this out of the goodness of their own hearts, they aren't doing it at all right now...
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:37
Next time it will be an iphone, that's for sure.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 22:48
You would think that by now Samsung would've learnt that it's imperative to keep customers fully informed as to the status of future updates. Sim Free Galaxy S2 owners have been stuck on 2.3.4 for a long time whilst networks in the UK have updated to 2.3.6.
Samsung are not rewarding customers who have most likely paid £400+ to own a phone that in theory should receive updates prior to the Networks but this has not been the case.
I have contacted Samsung UK numerous times via Twitter about the status of ICS being rolled out sim free Galaxy S2 handsets but they haven't bothered to reply back.
I visited a Samsung service centre today and asked when ICS would be rolled out to Sim free variants and the customer service rep stated that its still in testing and they only have a beta version to hand, ICS will be made available in April.
To be perfectly honest Gingerbread (2.3.4) runs pretty much flawlessly however the reluctance on Samsung's behalf to answer customer queries and send updates in a timely manner has really annoyed me. I for one have voted with my wallet and have preordered a HTC One X and will sell my Galaxy S2 as soon as possible.
It's about principles...I really don't mind what version of Android I have but I paid a premium price to get updates for my phone only to fall behind network branded Galaxy S2's.
The upcoming Galaxy S3 could be the best thing since sliced bread but Samsung has lost my custom. A company that can't keep its promises or answer customer queries is not worth shelling my hard earned cash on.
Good riddance to you Samsung. Cnet I applaud you for doing Samsung's job and letting consumers know what's actually going on!
anonymous 23 March, 2012 23:26
"Sim Free Galaxy S2 owners have been stuck on 2.3.4 for a long time whilst networks in the UK have updated to 2.3.6."
That's because versions 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 fix specific issues with the network roms that aren't in 2.3.4.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 23:41
"That's because versions 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 fix specific issues with the network roms that aren't in 2.3.4"
Still that doesn't excuse the poor showing by Samsung UK customer services who can't even be bothered to answer questions.
You only have to look at the Facebook page / Twitter feef to see how many consumers are downright peed off and quite righly so.
Just because Samsung sold over 20 million SGS2's doesn't excuse them to behave in such a poor and arrogant manner. The consumer put Samsung at the top and the consumer can bring Samsung back down to earth with a bump.
I hope HTC et all have a stonking year.
anonymous 23 March, 2012 23:41
Enough Samsung, I get the message, you hate people who bought sim free.
This is certainly making me look at HTC
anonymous 24 March, 2012 00:00
obviously many people here don't know what Koreans are like... you gotta be more patient when you deal with them hahaha
anonymous 24 March, 2012 00:22
Obviously a lot of people here are new to the old days/ways of Samsung - cables not available, no response to emails, etc. Anyone remember how poor PC Studio was? This ICS situation is typical Samsung - but it won't stop me buying their handsets. I mean, would you start supporting another team because your boys have an awful run? I like Samsung handsets and will wait for any update.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 00:44
I would stop paying for that team if they repeatedly refused to answer my questions and reneged on commitments.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 01:06
I debranded my O2 Galaxy S II to XEU KI4 to be able to update to ICS. Been checking Kies everyday (Numerous times a day may I add), its getting a bit frustrating now.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 01:08
I will never buy samsung again , common 1 update is taking so long ..i am tired..
samsung along with making new devices , should work on updates also,,,they hardly care about customers...
anonymous 24 March, 2012 02:11
You said it right. This is beguining of brand erosion of Sumsung on android devices. HTC did earlier to them, they will also do for Desire series which is much older phones. I am selling my GS2 and switching to Galaxy Nexus (A lower hardware but fantastic upgrade potential). Thanks Samsung for serving this far!!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 02:36
I'm hoping this delay is due to them smoothing out the creaks that have appeared in the variant that has been pushed out to most devices thus far (LLLPQ). If Samsung end up pushing out LLLPQ to UK sim free devices serious words need to be had, as this is just pure laziness. I installed LLLPQ though Odin and quickly reverted to Gingerbread. The scrolling... honestly, it feels like a downgrade.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 03:24
i flashed mine to latest ics, and it works just fine!!!!!
info and firmware can be found at samsunggalaxys2 or sammobile (all firmwares here)
to be honest after using ics, i dont know what all the fuzz is about. its just an upgrade like any other and it isnt by anyway ground breaking stuff. as for battery well i feel like ginger bread was better, but i guess there will be updates on ics soon that will make it better battery wise.
if you dare to root and overclock(taking down the volt) you could change battery life, someone who used it for 3 DAYS without charging
!!!!!!!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 04:19
Someone commented this on the CNET crave......*** Samsung Galaxy S2 ICS update rolling out from today ***
By..
anonymous 23 March, 2012 16:47
I received my Galaxy S2 yesterday and was reading this list on the 19th with interest, mine is an unlocked version sent to me from Finland by DHL. Anyway this morning after yesterday playing with it, i found the update option in the settings and selected. It instantly found the 4.0.3 update, downloaded it in about 10mins over the wireless network, installed and i am now on ICS, it worked really smoothly and kept all my passwords etc, most impressed!
Sorry you guys are having to wait, but i guess as a new owner it was no big deal to me, but if i was a long time user, i guess it would be frustrating......
So I replied....
Hi there anonymous (23 March, 2012 16:47),
So you "found the update option in settings"..... that would be FOTA....(aka Firmware Over The Air)..... ummm i think you may be telling a little porky there mate.... If you read the 'Official' Samsungs ICS user/update manual available from Samsung... It States (page 8 to be specific).....
The ICS SW upgrade is not currently supported via FOTA.
When the ICS upgrade becomes available
to upgrade your GT-I9100 to ICS version,
please upgrade your mobile via KIES 2.0
You can download KIES 2.0 from www.samsung.com
was your SG2 running Ginger Bread, as this would be the reason that FOTA is not available for ICS.... just guessing.....?
He/She replied............
Hi, no porkies, i am a convert from blackberry so no idea, it just worked, if there is any info from the phone that would be interesting please let me know.
It was on Gngerbread 2.3.5, i noticed when checking earlier.
it now states:
Android version - 4.0.3
Build - IML74K.XXLPQ
I have not yet even tried to connect the phone to USB as it doesn't have any software with it unlike my blackberry did.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 06:16
I'm leaving T-Mobile & Samsung as soon as I can. Both are idiots not to keep the millions of buyer up to date on exactly what's going on. It sure doesn't make the GS2 the phone of the year in my mind due to Samsung's negligence, in the way they've handled this. finally, is there any wonder that T-Mobile had to lay-off 1900 people & actually had more people leave their service than those that signed up. T-Mobile had a chance to really shine but as most companies these days they're more worried about their year end bonus than serving their customers.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:12
When you are lying on your death bed you'll wish you spent your life doing something better than plugging into Kies twice a day for weeks.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:23
My next phone will be the HTC One X. When I had my HTC I was one of the first to receive Gingerbread it was same with Sense 3.0. I miss my HTC Desire HD. GS2 is a good phone but Touchwiz is killing me. I was actually considering buying the Galaxy S3 but I think I will be wise!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:27
I will not be getting the S3 based on this debacle. Just checked again this morning. I have put up with friends on locked phones all through the year with more recent versions of ginger bread than mine. I had thought that as mine was unlocked I would be first with the up dates as it was with my unlocked HTC desire.
Have pre-ordered a HTC One X. Good buy touch swizz I will not miss you. I have just ordered an ES8000 tv so I hope this will perform better. Why cant I stay away from Sammy!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:34
I still maintain MOST people will stick with Samsung just as they would with their team. Also, I took the plunge and 'Ice Creamed' my GS2 via cnet with ease. Backed up EVERYTHING on the handset to Kies first. A couple of times, it looks like it's done but DO NOT be too hasty in removing that cable as the update will restore ALL apps, emails, etc to your device. Two niggles I had: 1. Refused to open the first dragged widget to the screen - just binned it and repeated. 2. Wi-fi would not toggle via the drop down screen first time round - restarted phone and all's well. Have to say though, apart from a cooler lock screen which is easier to swipe, visually it's much ado about nothing. People waiting may well be disappointed. Personally, will add 'Go Launcher EX', a fantastic app that makes a HUGE difference to the GS2. (PS. handset is working fine 6 hrs in.)
anonymous 24 March, 2012 07:54
I bet people will still be getting the amazing Galaxy S3
anonymous 24 March, 2012 08:05
I am usually very cautious, but agree that Samsung have treat customers badly ( by lack of communication ), and decided to follow your guide, using Odin. I have a sim free Galaxy S2, and have never done anything other than wait for official updates. I found it so easy. I am in the UK, my phone works 50% faster, and it seems totally bug free. Your choice, and your risk, but if I find it easy, anyone will. ICS is better than Gingerbread, but if you are undecided, hang on and wait for the official update. I will not by a Samsung again, just because of this update debacle .
anonymous 24 March, 2012 09:25
I upgraded manually from the Three rom, was not impressed. Three embedded so much bloatware and Samsung has hidden most ICS goodness with Touchwiz. Went back to root stock and will let the update come to me. Not all that bothered after seeing it first hand.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 09:51
HTC One X - here I come!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 09:58
I am really frustrated with Samsung. Excellent phone but really bad communications with customers which just isn't good enough. I emailed them a few days ago and their response just enraged me. Terrible, terrible customer services. I don't think they know what they doing.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 10:02
I have a sim-free S2... no updates coming through the phone or Kies. So much for the 23 March release!!! Absolutely livid that 3 customers are getting it before sim-free. Cheers Samsung!!! I don't think I'll bother with the S3 when it comes out after shelving the money for an S2 sim-free and getting this sort of sub-standard customer service.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 10:34
Why do people think they are paying a premium for SIM-free? Just goes to show how poor maths education is these days.
But yes I'm also frustrated that SIM-free seems to take longer than network locked.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 11:14
Exactly. I bought my phone SIM-free as it was cheaper than a 24 months rip-off price.
Finch 24 March, 2012 11:55
What people fail to realise is that the phone you get with your contract is (generally speaking) a freebie chucked in to get you to sign. You are taking out a mobile phone contract and paying for mobile network services, not the phone itself. Sim Free is the opposite, hence the frustration of paying £600ish up front just to have someone get an update on a contract before you.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 11:55
Just spoken to Samsung about the update. Don't hold your breath. They told me everyone would be updated by the 24th April. Naturally, my response was here in the UK a week consists of 7 days and that they should not use the term "week commencing". I for one will no longer be purchasing Samsung products or Android based phones. They're both a pile of pants!!!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 13:19
I have installed the 3 uk firmware using odinand i think ics is ok apart from the jerky scrolling action.
I will keep this installed untill samsung get there finger out with the sim free version.
Maybe they are working on a fix for the scolling but i do wonder if 3 paid to get it first though.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 16:27
"They told me everyone would be updated by the 24th April."
That is just not on, that is Samsung blatantly lying about rolling out the update in the first place and how long it would take.
This isn't just misinformation, but deceit and I certainly don't appreciate that after paying hundreds of pounds to buy the phone directly from Samsung.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 17:48
Theory:
The big telcom company's out there hate people who buy "unlocked"/SIM-Free phones. After all, if we were buying the branded phones thru them, we would end up paying nearly double for the device over the course of the two year "Premium" contract they would make us sign, right? Ultimately, by paying more up front, we save more in the long run, thus denying Shylock his pound of flesh.
So, when thy Telcoms negotiate their deals with Samsung they take this into consideration these days. If I were a telcom company, I would gladly pay a couple of percentage points more per device as long as Samsung agreed to release the Upgrade for ICS a to my customers before releasing it to a bunch of angry nerds who thought they'd found a way to beat the system. Shylock, u bastard.
So, this being the case, I am just going to have patience and continue to convey the benefits of having a contract free device to whomever will listen. This strategy of the telcom companies does not make me want to rush back to them and sign a 2 year contract, it just makes me even more certain I'm doing the right thing.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 17:56
I think it's more likely (if they're going to be that underhanded) that they intentionally say a date that's way before the actual release so that people get impatient and do it themselves with Odin, voiding their warranty.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 18:40
I paid nothing for my S2 (through Orange UK - complete with their bloatware extras) as I pay enough for my con trick (sorry, contract) - however, I am still irritated to have to wait; an Orange techie friend of mine tells me that even in-house they're having to wait!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 19:05
This happens with ALL manufacturers not just SAMSUNG.... don't think for a second HTC or anyone else for that matter is any better... I had to upgrade my old Desire HD MYSELF having waited for months to get an update to Gingerbread!!!
Besides once you update you won't even be able to tell much difference from Gingerbread anyway and you would have forgotten about ICS... sheeeeesh! Oh and Jelly Bean is out later this year LOL!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 19:23
Just one question. Why does Google bother releasing new versions of android? No one can get their hands on them! the latest version of android is like the search for the holy grail. Absolute waste of time.
k9dinner 24 March, 2012 19:46
I bought TWO Sim-free S2s; one for me, one for my wife. Samsung is making water in a public place.
As my old rugby coach always said, 'The bigger they are, the harder they fall.' We will just walk away next time round.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 20:48
Umm... Hello? SAMSUNG! Can we have our ICS update, NOW! The only Ice Cream I'm having at the moment is in my freezer!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 21:16
It's really frustrating that sim free users have to wait that long for ICS when the network linked users can enjoy it already! It looks like Samsung does care more about big clients (networks i.e.o2, T-mobile etc.) and not individual clients. Calculation is simple! Who provides more profit than is more important! Shame on you Samsung!!!
anonymous 24 March, 2012 21:43
I've just updated my S2 and I'm on the three network and in UK through kies just let you guys know.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 22:23
I just updated using ODIN, and I have to say I'm not impressed. I was really hoping there'd be less TouchWiz, and more ICS, but this is not the case. TouchWiz is plain ugly.
Will definitely be getting a HTC One X next purchase as I can't stand TouchWiz.
anonymous 24 March, 2012 23:05
Bought completely Sim-free un locked from amazon - no ICS update.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 03:22
The only way to update Samsung's Galaxy S II to Ice Cream Sandwich is using Odin. The "now rolling" ICS update announced by Samsung 12 days ago is a total lie, there's no ICS update through Kies! The only ICS updates I know of were done with Odin, voiding the phone's warranty. I live in Europe and still there's no update available for my unlocked SGS2, using Kies or OTA.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 08:42
Aren't the phone manufacturers suppose to support their phones with two years worth of updates? If so, at least we know that we'll get the update within the next year! There is hope yet. Just hold in there people.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 10:10
Thank you very much for this article, this is one of the few places on the public internet where you can find out what is happening with Ice Cream Sandwich roll-out in the UK for sim free/unlocked phones.
Still waiting for ICS on my sim free SGS2
anonymous 25 March, 2012 10:54
Are sim free /unlocked phones from the carphone warehouse actually sim free/unlocked or skinned by CPW???
anonymous 25 March, 2012 12:52
Carphone warehouse are completely sim free and unlocked
anonymous 25 March, 2012 16:08

Have a SIM free Samsung Galaxy S2, currently on the 3 network. Absolutely no sign of an update on KIES or FOTA. I have been checking several times a day and it is turning a little bit into an obsession. This has caused a lot of resentment with a lot of people and the thing is a little bit of communication would have completely put all this bad feeling to rest.
If there is a problem then they should have said exactly what was going on then we would not have been over the moon to not have ICS but at least we would have known what to expect. Samsung need to work on their communication skills.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 16:27
I have been emailed this reply
Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I'm afraid that it tends to be the case that networks receive updates before unbranded phones. They pay for this privilige. ICS is only available on 3 to date but we expect it will be made available through Kies over the coming weeks.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

This is the response I got from Samsung after I sent a complaint....
First, My complaint....
I''''ve been checking Kies everyday for the proposed ICS update from week commencing monday 19th (As samsung stated it would), as of yet I have not been able to download the update. Kies is saying my phone is up to date with my current firmware version (KI4). I would like to know when this update is going to be available to download? If it has been delayed I would like to know why? And also I would like to know why netwrok 3 has already rolled it out to their customers. I paid 499.99 for my sim free factory unlocked handset and I don''''t understand why I''''m receiving substandard service?
The Response....
Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.
In relation to your query I am sorry that you feel the release of the Android platform 4.0 has not been quick enough all we can advise is that it has been released and when available for your handset you will be prompted for the update when you connect to Kies over the coming weeks.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.
Kind regards,

Simfree customer, I have signed up for my contract with E2Save, a company held by CarephoneWarehouse, what I was not aware of is that the phone is sim-free so I kept 3 bugging for what the issue was. Till 1 day I discovered that my phone is running the CPW software, well at least a good thing that came out of this is that I finally realized my phone is sim-free. However I would like to hear a statement from CarephoneWarehouse regarding the situation. On a positive not at least we do not have to suffer from all the bugs the 3branded customers are so in hinsight it is a good thing that we will get a less buggier version of ICS, and in that time hopefully more apps will support it.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 19:38
Put CM9 on my phone. Amazing. Samsung really need to sort this out.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 20:13

I got exactly the same response - clearly a script they are working to. No honesty, no customer service. It implies they helped us in some way in the first place - well I don't think so!! Just rubbish really.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 20:21
To the person
" I suspect that the reason we have not received the upgrade is much more sinister"
any gingerbread above 2.3.4 on galaxy s2 was released by networks because of problems wirhin their bloatware. sim free s2 didnt need these fixes hence no higher firmware need as 2.3.4 runs fine on sim free s2
anonymous 25 March, 2012 20:47
Thank you for your reply,do you work for Samsung or is this just a supposition ? Surely my point that the hardware is different holds water and this is the reason firmware was changed.Dont forget all the battery issues the first buyers had.
Does Samsung create the bloatware for the mobile companies and therefore the fixes ?? Wasnt aware of that. Doesnt make sense that this bloatware which causes extra problems gets an update before the pure Touchwiz....please explain that.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 20:53
Dont think you are right, these are not bloatware issues,so why has my camera, battery and gmail not been enhanced
v2.3.5
Released on 25 July 2011, Android 2.3.5 included a number of system enhancements:[42]
Improved network performance for the Nexus S 4G, among other fixes and improvements
Fixed Bluetooth bug on Samsung Galaxy S
Improved Gmail application
Shadow animations for list scrolling
Camera software enhancements
Improved battery efficiency
anonymous 25 March, 2012 21:07
I am happy with gingerbread :)
Whats the point of having ICS if its not going to be Pure ICS? Lets just all take a chill pill and find ourselves new meat for our next simfree investment or for those due an upgrade. However, if S3 is realsed in a few monthsand is a thing of beauty, i am sure majority of people complaining will still buy it.
Most companies are dodgy, look at Apple.. great products but come with major restrictions and not to forget their cunning marketing.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 21:27
At least apple delivers the updates to all gadgets at once,
Look at samsung --- some S2s been updated to ICS and most are still awaiting !!!!!
Come on Samsung , atleast give us a date when ICS will be available for unlocked versions !!
Samsung rather than making adds specific towards apple fans, I will suggest to concentrate on looking after ur fans and update the unlocked S2s to ICS
At least there should be a statement from Samsung stating the date when ICS will be available for unlocked S2 ---------------
anonymous 25 March, 2012 21:40
I dont work for samsung and glad I dont with the flak they're getting.
The 2.3.5 update was from me reading around the net as the wife had a galaxy ace for xmas and was on 2.3.4 while my s1 was on 2.3.5. I just remember reading about the s2 not having 2.3.5 on sim free (then I brought an s2) I really dont think there's a big scam going on with hardware. I think its samsung caving into preasure and allowing the networks to push it first, I think they have then cottoned on to all the glitches people are reporting and trying to fix them before they push it
anonymous 25 March, 2012 21:54
2.3.5 was for locked handsets to fix operator specific bugs with gingerbread. Unlocked handsets only update to 2.3.4 Those information found within 10s of searching the web.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 22:00
Thanks I l knew I read it
anonymous 25 March, 2012 22:11
Happy with Gingerbread -- really pleased for you -- so why are you on this page where people arent happy
anonymous 25 March, 2012 22:32
Hey find me one release, direct from Samsung that states 2.3.5 was for branded phones only,go on I will even give you 20 s
anonymous 25 March, 2012 23:20
samsung think very little of its loyal customers who bought sim free handsets at premium prices,
what company do you know allows a third party to distribute its goods before it doe's its own ?
or does samsung have shares in 3 ? i wonder
anonymous 25 March, 2012 23:25
Yes Samsung seem to have messed up but they're not the only ones who get these things wrong. I had a HTC Hero and two years ago when the update to Android 1.6 was due it was exactly the same and people were saying just the same things that people are saying here.
But I wonder how many of the 20m+ owners even know that there's an upgrade on the way or are bothered about it? That's probably the reason for manufacturers acting the way they do. Most owners don't know or care! And let's face it, if it's only available over Kies, even when it is available it's going to be quite a time before most people realise!
So, why don't we all chill and get on with using our great phones. The sky isn't going to fall in for the sake of ICS.
anonymous 25 March, 2012 23:50
Hi all
Just had an email (25/03/2012) in reply to my email i sent (22/03/2012) to samsungs official site, about my ICS update. They thanked me for my email and patience, and told me to keep checking through kies air for my update. Not one remark on if it is actually released yet or an expected due date. I asked in my email to them - when will us sim free galaxy s2 users be getting update, and why haven't we got it when the carrier Three has already delivered ICS to their customers with contracts. They have simply side stepped my questions and just expect all sim free users to keep checking day after day with no hint of when it is due to us. I think it is just the strategy of big companies to boost the sales of their new handsets and hope we will all upgrade to their new devices. Obviously by keeping us waitng they hope we will buy new phones. I am totally happy with my device and hope to still be using it in a couple of years time.
I can't see how they would have any tweaks they need to do to their software for us sim free users as they would not have released it to all the carriers first. They are sitting on it and they make more money off carriers who dish out contracts. I told them that also. Anyway, chin up, here's a joke to cheer you up.... What did Cinderella do when she got to the ball........? Gagged.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 01:37
Are you sure that 2.3.5 is only for carrier locked phones because i bought my sim-free gs2 from amazon but it has 2.3.5. Is there anyway to make sure it really is a sim-free phone and not just network unlocked??
anonymous 26 March, 2012 01:46
Shame on you Samsung
anonymous 26 March, 2012 05:52
This is what I think has happened. Samsung have signed an exclusive honeymoon period with the networks who, whether we like it or not, are more important than you or I. Collectively their bulk buying power holds influence. Once this honeymoon period has expired, whenever that is, us SIM-free owners will receive our updates.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 08:33
At least I won't have to keep plugging in my phone to check for the ics update, I'll just wait until you lot stop whining!
anonymous 26 March, 2012 10:24
Im on ThreeUK Network, phone supplied direct from Three. Kies is version 2.2
Still no update for me, I think it is all a lie!
anonymous 26 March, 2012 10:50
Hahaha, this comments thread is hilarious. To the nerds on here crying over the lack of ICS - you purchased a phone with Gingerbread, with no explicit promises from Samsung that it would ever receive the upgrade. They made no promises at all. Ever. Now that they have announced it, you should be just be grateful when it comes along, not sitting in front of your computer demanding apologies and daily updates from Samsung. Is your life really so much poorer with no ICS in it? How do you know what issues they are facing during testing? Maybe they found stuff that needs sorting out. If so, don't expect them to start coming out saying 'oh sorry, our release was sh*t, please bear with us whilst we fix our terrible software'. It will come when it will come.
I love some of the conspiracy theories here: 'ooo, I think they are doing this to force people to update via Odin and void their warranty'. It's like the ramblings of a mad man. Using words like 'enraged' and 'fiasco'. hahaha. Go outside, take a deep breath, maybe go for a nice walk in this lovely weather. Once ICS comes, after that initial 10 minutes of feeling good about yourself, and having some sort of tragic bragging rights to your ICS-toting 'friends', your life will by no measure be any richer. I'm patiently waiting for my update, I'm not letting it reduce me to tears and bitching over the internet. It IS coming so just be patient.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 12:35
I have a sim free Galaxy S2 and have checked regularly for the ICS update, still not available Monday 26th march - The product is great but the support is desperately poor. If Samsung want to keep their customers loyal, then they need to treat them better than this. I was going to buy my wife a similar gadget to replace her ageing Nokia, but I have decided in the last week that although it will be an Android, it will not be a Samsung. It is frustrating enough that I as a techie can't get proper support without having her ranting at me too :-) !!!!
anonymous 26 March, 2012 12:53
I really don't know why people are saying they are selling their phones or their next phone will be another brand etc etc... The S2 is still a fantastic phone.. phone of the year remember..which is probably why most people bought it. I know the update thing is frustrating but...still....jeez....awesome phone
anonymous 26 March, 2012 13:46
The S2 is still a great phone but Samsung UK did a very bad job in the past week (and it seems in the coming week too). If I'll buy another Samsung it will not be in the UK (I live abroad anyway).
anonymous 26 March, 2012 15:17
@anonymous 26 March, 2012 10:50.
You seem upset.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 16:49
Sim free & no update. Reading the thoughts of people on the Three network it may be a good thing they are still testing it etc as the feeling is that ICS is very buggy etc and not what Samsung owners expect. Probably a good thing it's not released yet otherwise people would be on here complaining about these bugs..........
J
anonymous 26 March, 2012 16:58
Official announcement on Samsung's facebook page that ICS is still in testing for sim free users.
So we have conformation from Samsung themselves that they have been attempting to deceive us and tech websites by saying that ICS has already been released to some users in batches. Absolutely despicable, I will not be purchasing products again from a company that blatantly lies to me.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 17:01
Jesus people...get a life...really. I came here to see where the update is. Obviously not here yet, so I'll wait. My phones not broken, Gingerbread works just fine, and by the sounds of it, it wont hardly seem like a new firmware. Like someone else said, go for a walk in this nice lovely weather, sounds like you need some fresh air rather than getting all angry about something that is not going to change your life one bit.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 18:13
It is now the 26th, and there is still no update for my unlocked S2. I am now considering the unofficial suggestion displayed in the video :'(
anonymous 26 March, 2012 18:46
I have updated mine through the unoficial methods highlighted above, very cool. The question is, HOW DO I REVERT TO BE ABLE TO UPDATE MY PHONE THROUGH KIES SOFTWARE?
alyusuph 26 March, 2012 20:03
I have also installed ICS as explained above, only to find out that my phone is no longer supported by Samsung KIES. HELP me on how to revert to Gingerbread. What are the steps to be followed?
anonymous 26 March, 2012 20:13
26th March. 20:12
Hello
I also need to know - if I update through the unoficial methods highlighted above, HOW DO I REVERT TO BE ABLE TO UPDATE MY PHONE THROUGH KIES SOFTWARE? Can anyone confirm if this would be possible please? Thank you in advance.
anonymous 26 March, 2012 22:30
Samsung have really blown the whole ICS thing. People have been talking about it for ages now and it just seems really old news that never happened. Meanwhile everyone is excited about the new IPad and a new phone is looming. Meanwhile people who spend a lot of cash on Galaxy devices are still waiting for what seem like an old update! Samsung should just scrap ICs and jump straight to Jelly Bean ..oh yes that's starting to be the chat around the pub table now. Samsung are just sooo slow...I am actually considering Apple for a new phone and Pad because of this inability to deliver.
anonymous 27 March, 2012 07:55
To all those commentards who are stamping their feet like little girls saying 'I'm never buying from Samsung again'. Yes, yes you will. And you know it. When the S3 comes out you'll be all over that. Stop kidding yourselves.
Seriously, is the lack of ICS really ruining your life right now??
anonymous 27 March, 2012 07:59
@anonymous 26 March, 2012 16:58
Hahaha! You sir, are an idiot.
alyusuph 27 March, 2012 08:23
Would like to share my one night experience with the ICS update.
1) Alarm clock still sleeps with the phone. If you are waking up early to catch your flight, don't swithc off your phone, if you do, then just buy a Nokia not SGS2.
2) Browser use with 3G is still problematic, I encountered at least three prolonged black sreens, just blank.....very irritating lags. Opera mini seems to work extremely well and is very fast with ICS. One thing I have learn't is that I will never touch the Android browser again.
3) I had issues synchronising Microsoft Exchange with Gingerbread through 3G, (wifi worked fine). That problem is now sorted out completely.
4) The Home screen still needs further work, the clock seems as if its an image that has been stretched beyond its proportions, this has to be Samsung Touch Wiz to blame.
5) Kies shows that I cannot update my firmware - maybe after the next update of Kies things will change?
Generally speaking apart from a few lags, mostly cause by applications interrupted by internet connecdtions, the update seems to be more faster than Gingerbread.
Final word: Samsung should invest in changing TouchWiz. ICS update looks like same wine in old bottles
anonymous 27 March, 2012 09:49
Hi all mobile phones in Gibraltar are SIM free as is my S2 as at today no update has been received. I understand Gibraltar is very small and insignificant but I still paid over £500 for my S2 just like all contract free users, so I dont see why I should not have the benefit of receiving the update, never mind were you are geographicaly we still want the update, its no longer about the update as I think the S2 is brilliant as it is now, but what the hell if there are improvements to be made why not!!!! Does anyone know or can guess when Gibraltar should get the update? Gibraltar is a British colony, does this mean we are on the same band wagon as all S2 users in the Uk or are we in a different one.
Thanks
anonymous 27 March, 2012 12:13
Well, its now 27th and even O2 have announced roll out. So where does that leave us SIMFREE users now? If there are no carrier addons to put into the release HOW can it take Samsung so long to deploy the new f/w via KIES? It's a mystery to me... Shame on Samsung for zero comms on the subject as well. grrr.
anonymous 27 March, 2012 12:34
Well as someone else has posted, it would seem that Samsung's palm has been crossed with silver to keep back the update for generic phones.
I assume this means that they make far more from network operators than the do from people like us who are prepared to invest ahead of time to save in the long run, the mobile networks hate this as it reduces their income.

The ironic thing is I, and probably a large proportion of Galaxy S2 owners, are on a contract with one of the major UK networks (Orange, in my case). However, as it was the retailer (buymobilephones.net, in my case) who had taken the decision to sell me an 'unbranded/SIM free' phone as part of my 24 month contract, I now have to wait for Samsung to get its finger out. Don't get me wrong, I would not want an Orange-branded ICS update!
I have been here before with my previous Samsung i8910 HD, which was also a fantastic phone in its time but was left unsupported by Samsung. However, this did not put me off buying Samsung again. The products are, on the whole, excellent quality and the GS2 is still superior to virtually all phones on the market today, almost a year after it was released.
The lack of ICS definitely does not detract anything from the GS2 but I agree Samsung need to be more clear with their communications and apologise for their false promises.
anonymous 27 March, 2012 14:29
Either one of two facts is correct:
1. The release of ISC for SG2 is so buggy that Samsung will not release it to unlocked phones, which means Three and O2 users are installing software with known bugs. OR
2. There are no bugs in the software, which is why Samsung has given the service providers the go-ahead to mod and bloat it out, in which case, there is another reason why Samsung is not releasing to unlocked devices, one which they are keeping very quiet about!
anonymous 27 March, 2012 14:55
for all of you saying samsung made false promises your completely wrong. I'm still waiting for ics on my gs2 but samsung said it was STARTING to roll out the update which it did even if it was starting with carrier branded phones. They even said it would take weeks to reach all gs2's. At no point did they ever say that sim-free phones would be first.
anonymous 27 March, 2012 15:10
This thread has been a great time pass. People crying over updates they are not getting to people threatning to boycott a copmany they claim loyalty for...... Hilarious, Love it; this is good entertainment.
Tell me people, what is so wrong with Gingerbread? Are you not able to call\text\browse the web\ have a decent battery life\ have ALL working applications.... and not to forget, it also has features like multitasking\camera.
I was looking forward to ICS but I am not tooo disappointed as I paid for Gingerbread when I purchased the phone. I eagerly await the S3 and I will be buying that Sim Free like I did S2 unless some other product appeals to me more. People, there is sooooooo much more to life than ICS., for example, have you seen the weather outside?? I am going to go now and have myself an actual Ice Cream Sandwich :)

@anonymous 27 March, 2012 15:10
You're missing the point, it's about us being current and Samsung being open and honest with their customers. If consumers didn't clamour for the latest gadgets (and pay top dollar to have them), and were all satisfied with what we had, Samsung would have only a tiny proportion of the profit they make. They tempted us to buy the S2 in huge numbers when it was released (while they still had huge profit margins in the product, and before it was heavily discounted to the service providers). And they're going to do the same thing all over again with the S3.
We're loyal... frustrated, but loyal. All we're asking for is some transparency in what is a long awaited, and massively talked about update. Most of us know that the service providers have to add their bloat and modifications for locked phones, so it's not unreasonable to expect that unlocked phones should be ready first, particularly because we paid such profits to Samsung in the early days of the product's release. If it all made sense, then no-one would even care. But it doesn't. I think we deserve, at the very least, to be well informed and treated like valued customers. Sadly, that's not forthcoming.
I can only take solace in the fact that the earlier Three and now O2 releases may be afflicted by flaws which Samsung are desperately trying to sort out. That's fine. JUST TELL US WHAT'S GOING ON?
anonymous 27 March, 2012 16:32
i for one have been highly entertained by all the threads on different forums and facebook cursing and blinding samsung over the lack of a sim free update.
this stuff is QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT LMAO.
yes ive beeb diligently pluging my phone into kies everday looking for the fabled ice cream sandwich but hey im not throwing myself on a spike over...phone works fine...i personaly bought a n unbranded phone 500 quid up front to stick two fingers up to network contracts that cost almost double what im paying for phone and service over two years
if i was that concerned id have bought the nexus but i chose sgs2
so....if i get the update tomorrow....or in 3 weeks who cares..im not trapped i a contract lol so if the networks all get it first small price to pay for not being locked into ghem for two poxy years
just relax and enjoy a fine device
but pleas do keep whining cos im enjoying the hell outve it
anonymous 27 March, 2012 17:05
Nicely timed as now just pre ordered an HTC One X, if you'd bought out 4.0 for my SG2 or at least told us why or what was going on then I'd wouldn't have even though about it and eagerly waited and no doubt bought an SG3 no doubt like many many thousands of others.
Good bye Samsung, can't really say it's been a pleasure!!!!
anonymous 27 March, 2012 18:10
People THINK....Who is samsungs bigger customer? Is it you?! NO...is it 3/o2/voda....YESSS!!!!
Now, how many sim-free owners went on and upgraded (via odin) already with 3s ics firmware? MANY!!
How many are going to upgrade to o2s..?
EVEN MORE!!!
What would be the case IF the unbranded/carrier addons-free/crup-free firmware came out first??
YESSS!!!! Everyone/many would choose to install this rather than wait for the carries to test...add...re-test...and bla bla bla
So....
So.....SIM-FREE-ers
DO NOT EXPECT IT TO ROLL UNTIL EVERY CARRIER DOES...
At least that is my opinion…by the way, I am checking twice per day since the 19th!!
anonymous 27 March, 2012 18:31
This is ridiculous. I for one by phones because I like technology, if all I wanted do to was the basics I would not buy such an expensive phone, those who are mocking us should probably look at how much they wasted on their GS2 when they would have been just as content, according to them, with basic low cost mobiles.
The GS2 is aimed at people who want top end products, with a top end price tag to match too! I expect a top quality service in return. Currently there is less than no service, they have lied to us by claiming the update was "rolling out" when now, in their own words, it is still in the testing stage.
anonymous 27 March, 2012 19:03
oh boohoohoo jeez lighten up and try to wrap yer pointy head around the meaning of rolling out
anonymous 27 March, 2012 19:40
well said sir 18.31
look out for the Samsung employees on here trying to diminish any valid point or complaint--they do it for sure.
jus 27 March, 2012 21:16
So its now the 27th March and still no ICS for samsung galaxy s2 on tesco's anyone know when update will be released Its nearly April.... I might go for the Iphone when it comes out in Oct, less hassel........
anonymous 27 March, 2012 22:57
and there is still no update for the unlocked phone. no news, no nothing. they should be ashamed about their way of communication
anonymous 27 March, 2012 23:07
this was their latest statement on samsung UK from 3 hours ago:
Samsung UK
Hey everyone, we know you are keen for more information on ICS. We are working hard to get more news for you, but we currently have no further information outside of the official statements we have posted. We will let you know as soon as we have more info.
well thanks a lot, what a mess
anonymous 27 March, 2012 23:43
Good God! People are so impatient! Just flash yer phone with a O2 or Three Rom via Odin!!! It's really simple and you just flash the unbranded one when it's released. C'mon folks, you'd buy a lesser product (ie HTC) because Samsung is staggering the update. I payed £450 cash for my phone from O2 so ....
anonymous 28 March, 2012 02:07
I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3 on my Galaxy S2 (Bought from Hong Kong 2 days ago) and I must say I want my old S2 with Gingerbread back :(
ICS 4.0.3 is very slow, lots of bugs with browser, lots of apps wont run properly and it keeps resetting itself.
I wouldn't get upset about not having the update yet as there are quite obviously bugs that need addressing.
anonymous 28 March, 2012 06:32
I'm not sure we have a case against Samsung, unless maybe a few people have been misinformed by people on the helplines (but hey, that's helplines isn't it?). I've been looking back over what their press releases have actually said, and they announced:
"Samsung UK can confirm that the roll out of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from week commencing 19 March, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network's own software approvals process."
So they say that ICS will roll out that week. They do not mention sim free phones at all. When does rollout start? 20 March, that same week - just one day after they said. With the Three network.
The problem was CNet reporting, which said on 19 March "Today is D-day for Samsung Galaxy S2 users who bought their devices SIM-free". Referring to the quote I gave above as support!
I'm not saying that Samsung are doing a good job, that their customer service is ok or any of that stuff. The only thing I know I like about them is the phone itself. But people repeatedly refer to being lied to, which is a really strong accusation, and when it comes to announcements from the top, I simply can't see as it's true. It might not make sense that networks get it out first, but we've never been promised anything different (except by CNet, and it's amazing how many other articles have quoted them!).
If I worked at Samsung (I don't, as some conspiracy folks might suggest) when I wasn't whipping my staff to get ICS out to sim-free phones I'd be cursing CNet and other sites that quoted them for their shoddy basis of reporting and building false expectations.
anonymous 28 March, 2012 06:34
I should also have mentioned in the above comment that Samsung always maintained that it could take several weeks for all phones to get ICS. It doesn't necessarily make sense that unlocked phones are waiting, but again, it's in line with what they said.
anonymous 28 March, 2012 08:45
@ Anonymous, what are you ranting about man, it was Samsung UK itself that announced the roll out will start on the 19th and will continue over the coming weeks, don't blame CNET, they just brought the news. Just wait patiently, the world is not gonna end mate, stop behaving like little childeren..
anonymous 28 March, 2012 10:09
@8.45 did that seem ranty? I'm sorry, thought it was one of the more measured responses. I'm looking forward to ics but am prepared to wait.
I don't think you're contradicting my point though. Did Samsung actually state that unlocked phones would receive an update in the past week? The only people I've seen say that are CNET, please offer a quote (rather than an assertion) to correct me if I'm wrong. I still think that whilst it's been a poor show from Samsung all they ever said was that the roll out would start that week, which it did, unfortunately with Three. So whilst we can be frustrated with Samsung we can't call them liars, which seems to be the most recurring point on this thread now.
anonymous 28 March, 2012 10:50
so I am back for more entertainment :)
The actual Ice Cream Sandwich I had yesterday packed a few calories but was a great experiece. I mean, the flavours were awesome and the texture was great. I then walked to a local bakery to try Gingerbread and guess what; my experience was just as good. If only there was a way to post some images on this thread :(
The best thing about the whole trip was the fact that I paid for both products with money that I earned by working for a company called Comp******* and NOT SAMSUNG.
Come on ppl, you really think Samsung would ask their employees to browse websites and start justifying their PR Disaster by leaving neutral comments??? If they did, and some unhappy employee contacted the media, it will be far more damaging for the company.
anonymous 28 March, 2012 15:27
You lot are crazy, ICS is the totally useless, NO PERFECT FLASH - Flash is so laggy on ICS, if you are one for the videos stay with GB

does it really matter when it comes out, I have one unlocked sim free handset and still no update, but do I really care, not enough to be upset, if I did so, then maybe I should of bought an iphone and paid for all my apps.
anonymous 2 April, 2012 22:52
Still no ICH for sim free (unlocked) SGS2. How sad ...
anonymous 3 April, 2012 05:41
Yes it absolutely does matter to me. I am so annoyed by this farce that you would not believe it.
anonymous 3 April, 2012 11:42
Bought the S2 unlocked, 500€ (420£) in France, in December, thinking the update would be rolled out in a matter of weeks. 4 months later, I'm still waiting.
I tried installing the official build, but apparently it's not totally compatible with my phone: everything worked fine, but for the GPS and Kies which will not perform further updates (something related to Samsung trying to avoid uncontrolled international sales). So I switched back after 3 weeks to the original 2.3 ROM I had before (which implies resetting the phone to factory defaults btw).
What I could see though using ICS for several weeks on the S2 is that Touchwiz is still massively useless, including the "*Hub" applications. For instance setting your gmail account in Touchwiz while having the Gmail application installed will still lead you to double contacts and double notifications of every mail. All default application are still unremovable, which is a bummer since 90% of them are useless.
The good point of this is that the frustration of not getting updated to ICS is not so strong now.
Anyway, with this ICS update fail Samsung is making a strong point:
- in favour of Microsoft's policy of not allowing customization of their mobile OS.
- against hardware vendors developping software (please stop all of you, or learn to do it right)
- against the linux (or Android, not sure) architecture, which seems completely impossible to rationalize into an easy-to-develop and easy-to-use OS.

Samsung Galaxy S2 owners who bought their device SIM-free are at the back of the UK Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade queue, Samsung has confirmed to CNET UK. And the reason you've been kept waiting? It's because Samsung is waiting for some mobile networks to finish testing the update, so it can be sure the software will work whatever network you're on. SIM-free S2 owners will get the ICS update "once we've got all of the operator pieces on board", said Simon Stanford, VP of Samsung Telecommunications and Networks for Samsung UK and Ireland, speaking exclusively to CNET UK today. The upgrade process Samsung has used to push out ICS to S2 owners means SIM-free devices can't be updated until all mobile networks have tested and approved ICS -- and since some operators are still testing and approving the update, some SIM-free S2 owners are still waiting to get Ice Cream Sandwich. 'It's got to work' "We work in conjunction with our partners to bring ICS to the existing base -- that's primarily what needs to happen, whatever network operator that may be," said Stanford. "In this particular instance, the open market variant [ie SIM-free] you would expect to come out first." Stanford confirmed, however, SIM-free S2 owners have been left twisting in the wind. "As an open-market customer you will be on a variety of networks, so it's got to work on whichever network you have chosen," he said. SIM-free S2 owners -- many of whom shelled out extra upfront for an unlocked handset in the hopes of being at the front of the upgrade queue -- have in fact trailed operators such as Three, which was the first operator to release the ICS update. O2 has also now pushed out the ICS update. "We were working with our operators to make sure that we brought it out to as many people as we can," Stanford added. "Vodafone we're expecting imminently [to release ICS]. Open market will be once we've got all of the operator pieces on board... It'll come at very much the same time." 'We don't want to disadvantage anyone' Stanford would not confirm exactly how many SIM-free S2 owners have received the ICS update so far, nor give a completion date for the ICS update rollout -- he would only say: "We're really pushing it hard over the next coming weeks." "It's always very tight, in terms of the testing processes and all the rest of it," he said. "It's not a switch in Korea and then the whole thing just activates every device that is out there... We work very closely with the networks to help them get ICS out. "Everyone holds their hands up and says, 'Well, we need to do more in these instances.'" Asked whether consumers would be better off buying a device from a network rather than SIM-free if they want to ensure they get future Android updates promptly, Stanford said: "In this instance [they would have been better off on a network]. Moving forward, I anticipate the upgrades will come a lot faster, at once, with everybody." He added that it's not Samsung's intention to prioritise SIM-free device buyers in future, rather it wants to level the playing field so everyone gets the update around the same time. "We don't want to disadvantage anyone, we don't want to say that they have to buy it from anywhere, we want everyone to have the same experience, whether or not it's open-market, network, to us they're exactly the same," he said. 'Communication can be managed better next time' Stanford conceded that communications is an area where Samsung can make its own improvements. And he apologised to any SIM-free S2 owners who have been disappointed by how long it's taken to get ICS. "The communication itself can be managed a bit better next time," he said. "It's just an ongoing process piece that we work very closely on to try and make sure we get it absolutely bang on so we apologise to anyone -- we really apologise to anyone -- who has been disappointed by this. "We're always desperate to get [updates] out as fast as we can, there's no reason for us not to. We don't like to have unhappy customers, it goes against everything that we do. We do take it very seriously. It's communication sometimes we need to work on -- I accept that. That there needs to be perhaps more overall communication with the partners involved as well," he said. "We are happy now that ICS is rolling out and those people that we've spoken to are very happy with it," Stanford added. "We're always looking for ways to speed it up -- with regards to Galaxy Note... the upgrade on that will be a lot quicker." Are you still waiting for your SIM-free S2 to be upgraded to ICS? Let us know in the comments, or post your own update over on our Facebook page, and watch my video below to see what you're missing.

I paid £599 for my sim free phone and I'm not complaining. Those people who are complaining need to get a life and stop connecting their phones to Kies everyday. And those threating to leave Samsung, GO AHEAD! Get an iPhone or whatever. Samsung nor anyone cares.

This man is a clown, on the day the phones were released you could walk into any Phones 4u and buy one for £525!!!!! If he thinks this negative publicity doesnt concern Samsung he knows nothing about the harm this has done to their credibility. This is a major difference between Samsung and Apple.Simon Stanford making comments proves this and he must think we are idiots, his excuse is pathetic and he knows it. I truly wish this hadnt happened as I love my phone and would have bought the s3 but any company that treats me,a loyal customer this way can go and find other mugs to swindle.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 20:09

Go ahead to Iphone, just remember that they will never upgrade anything.
So do you prefer a phone that can be upgraded but late or one that will NEVER be upgraded once you buy it ?
Just a reminder, why doesn't they give SIRI to the iphone4 users ? it's just a very basic upgrade... They don't cause they want everybody to change it to their 4S !
So you would prefer that Samsung does the same thing ? So if you like that then forget the update to ICS and welcome to the Apple world.
anonymous 8 April, 2012 20:32
Height of information !!!! Apple will never update its OS !!!! For your kind information Apple send major updates yearly and at the same time all over the world !!! Last major update included iCloud, for which google is still struggling!!! Good Bye Samsung, and here I come apple

GUYS HELP! The reason why i want to update to ics is because of my batterly life...(FEW HOURS) and (Heat problems). Now my phone has been shownig the update for over a month now, but any time i try to update, it just says to try via KIES... When i go to KIES it says,"YOUR DEVICE DOES NOT SUPPORT SOFTWARE UPGRADING BY KIES"?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WTF?? Every time i call samsung service centre im being told to ... "WAIT". Im very glad that i got that crap from my gf and haven't spend any money on it, unfortunately she had... over 500 pounds!! I mean comon!! No wonder people getting fed up with them liars from samsung. There is one thing that i'm very happy about... after this lesson i won't buy anything from samsung, as they simply don't care about sim free device users! Also to make communication a "BIT" better, you have to start communicating first... BUNCH OF LIARS FROM SERVICE CENTRE TELL ME 1000 diffrent stories every time i call... When i email them they give me instructions how to update... when i call they say it isnt out yet :0... ARGHHHH im so frustrated i would love to give taht device back to them, and tell them to shove it. Plus i like this phone so much its just a shame, we are being treated this way... SHAME ON YOU SAMSUNG(Your ex customer Matt)Also im sorry for my english, it's my third language.

anonymous 17 April, 2012 18:46
yahooooooooooooo finally ICS update for my unlocked galaxy s2 over Kies.
My CSC is XEU .
it took about 15 mins to go. I'm still tasting the update, but it looks nice though. Hope you all enjoy it as well ^ ^
anonymous 17 April, 2012 23:21
WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! At last I have ICS on my SIM FREE SGS2 via KIES. So far everything works and all of my settings were saved. All of my apps work too. Love the fact that when you press the power button there is now an optio to RESTART as well as to shut down. Also Love face unlock. It is not as secure but man is it convenient!
Dont like that you can call someone in your address book just by swiping as this can happen accidently. Generally happy with everything, there are no massive changes anyway.
If you live in London do not forget to retune your TV's etc tonight after midnight as we say goodbye to analogue TV. The old analogue stations will eventually become our 4G mobile phone networks for superfast mobile internet, so let's hope they get on with it!
Hope you all enjoy your SGS2 (until SGS3 at least)
anonymous 19 April, 2012 10:45
I live in Australia. My Kogan Unbranded UK GS2 (XEU) updated over the air to 4.0.3 from 2.3.4 about 18 hours ago. (No rooting or hacks so this is official) I am happy so far. Still exploring and getting used to it.

Samsung galaxy S2 locked on orange.

I have got my sky go working on galaxy s2 with ics by uninstalling the original app and installing this test app.
It shows you the loading bar but not the green line loading but after a few seconds the chennel starts.
Go here.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506967.....then in the last post on the page is this file.....com.bskyb.skygo-1.apk .....download and install and hey presto sky go works.
anonymous 28 April, 2012 02:02
My reckoning is that Samsung will wait until the S3 is out before letting those sim free owners have the ICS. They are the most likely to buy a handset outright, and therefore probably most likely to be the first customers for an S3. Give them the ICS early and it makes less of an argument for upgrading.
For those in a contract already, well they are already spoken for 'so to speak' and won't be in the same position to adopt a new handset as quickly as a those with a sim free preference.
My bet is that it will come out, once the S3 has been properly launched.
All that above is based on the assumption that no sim free S2 owner has been offered the update, without rooting, yet
Let's wait and see!
