Great news for Samsung Galaxy S2 owners -- the 4.3-inch smart phone will be getting Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich.
Confirmation came via Samsung UK, which tweeted, "Good news - the Galaxy S2 will be receiving ICS."
Samsung Galaxy S2 owners will be relieved to hear their relatively recent smart phones won't be left behind, and will be blessed with the newest version of Android, which introduces features such as the ability to unlock your phone using your face and a multi-tasking tool that was previously only on Honeycomb tablets.
The sobering news is there's no word on when that update will actually arrive. In the same tweet Samsung UK said there are "no dates confirmed as yet. We will keep you posted."
We have a grim feeling Galaxy S2 owners could be waiting a little while before the Editor's Choice-winning smart phone bags an update to Android 4.0.
That's because the Galaxy S2 isn't running 'vanilla' Android, but a Samsung-tweaked version. That means we'll have to wait while Samsung applies its own look and feel (plus a host of unwanted apps) to Ice Cream Sandwich.
That's a process that can take a frustratingly long time. HTC, another manufacturer that lathers its own customisation on top of Android, has vowed that some of its phones will be updated to version 4.0 early next year, so we wouldn't be surprised if the Galaxy S2 received its scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich in the first few months of 2012.
The Ice Cream Sandwich source code is already in the wild, so it's possible that a custom ROM will surface online for anyone who doesn't want to wait for Samsung to get its act together, and is brave/crazy enough to try rooting their phone.
Are you eagerly anticipating Ice Cream Sandwich? Do you hate waiting for updates? Tell us in the comments below, on our Facebook wall or over on our Google+ page.

Its like saying Dell Laptops will have Windows 8 but you will have to wait while they "tweak it" to their liking. Nobody would wait that long and they would wonder why they can't install it themselves. If Smartphones really do want to compete with laptops and PCs then the operating systems must be a lot more transparent than those so far offered. Maybe the new Windows phones will be different, but I doubt it.

In Malaysia we are still using 2.3.3 when the whole world are already 2.3.5 so I don't think I'll be trusting this company anymore.

Slow news day?
Come back when you have DATES!

I am always amused by the "I need this now and I'm insulted that I haven't already got it!!" brigade.
My S2 was a great phone yesterday, and is still a great phone today. It'll be a great phone in February and an even better one when 4.0 comes along.
Samsung - I like the customisations you do on top of raw Android. I look forward to the upgrade, but don't rush. Take your time and get it right. The delay will be worth it just to read the ever more outrageous rantings of those who think that every last x.x.n is a matter of life or death.

@ 1000114024
A very sober and refreshing comment. :-)
anonymous 19 November, 2011 00:58
up date..?? GREAT...!!! sure i'll wait...whats wrong with 2.3.5..??
David Bridge 20 November, 2011 08:02
I really don't care right now but I will once I see others with it so as long as it's not a massive delay it will be fine
anonymous 20 November, 2011 18:55
Doesn't matter where you live, you can flash 2.3.5 update, I'm in the UK using a 2.3.5 Netherlands update (official).
anonymous 21 November, 2011 22:39
I'm really looking forward to Ice cream sandwich its the fastest and best smartphone by a long shot! I'm on version 2.3.4 though my partner bought hers in switzerland and updated to 2.3.5 in UK is it available in uk yet????
anonymous 23 November, 2011 11:05
2.3.3 is still the official release. 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 are non-official beta versions which luckily are running flawlessly on all mobile phones. I think I would rather wait for offcial release then tweaking it myself :)
anonymous 24 November, 2011 09:54
Does anybody else feel disappointed that in spite of today's collective technology, there really isn't any one smart phone incorporating enough top existing features into one unit?
I guess I'm waiting for a 4.3" super AMOLED type display, 4G LTE, ICS, dual or quad-core energy saving processor, 8-10 MP camera and maybe NFC capability. Will the SG3 or some other Droid make the complete transition to the next level; or am I looking at the eventual iPhone 5?
anonymous 25 November, 2011 00:46
i think the rezound is getting close to what your looking for it beats the super AMOLED display plus it got 4g lte i think dual core with 8mp idk about ICS though
anonymous 25 November, 2011 01:46
2.3.3 can't be the latest official release. I got 2.3.4 through kies
anonymous 27 November, 2011 09:05
whens is ice cream sandwich out
anonymous 28 November, 2011 09:24
The developers over at XDA are likely going to have ICS up and running before Samsung (which is kind of silly when you think about the differences in resources available). They are still hard at work trying to get the mic working, as at the moment it doesn't work when making or receiving calls.
I have used a leaked version of it and it's 50/60% of the way to feeling like a full stock rom. The new look and feel of Android 4.0 is brilliant :)
I don't really agree with this statement though "...and is brave/crazy enough to try rooting their phone." It is VERY easy to root the Galaxy S2 due to the lack of a locked bootloader and also very easy to switch between different ROMs, kernels and modems without too many issues. Just go over to XDA Developers and find out for yourself...
Oh... and MIUI and CM7 are already on Android 2.3.7....
anonymous 29 November, 2011 08:43
When the update will come ?
anonymous 29 November, 2011 19:29
Urgh I just got my contract upgrade to a galaxy s2 to find out I have to wait for this update! This time 2 years ago I had just gotten my HTC hero which I had to wait months for an update from cup cake to eclair, seems I'm getting my new phones asst the wrong time!
anonymous 1 December, 2011 17:47
2.3.5 is already available in the UK, just has to be done via Kids on your PC.

AndroidLover 10 December, 2011 12:12

anonymous 15 December, 2011 03:44
I want a clean ICS version from Google. Why do they not give the info out so we can choose to upgrade right from them directly?
Am I the only one who doesn't just trust that the guys who develop their own versions from the open source code aren't going to add extra stuff that we might not find? I mean there is a lot of info on these phones and I would like to have a little more security assurance then some guy in his basement saying "oh sure you can trust me, I didn't add anything strange." That's not to say that the versions coming out aren't safe, but how do we know? I could follow the steps and upgrade it, but I'm not savy enough to run though their code to check for any hidden info steeling programs. I admit that. I want to update it. I am sick of waiting for Samsung and the crap apps they wont let me delete.
Can anyone direct me to a place that has the trusted reputation that I am looking for?
anonymous 15 December, 2011 14:51
So just to clarify.
If I buy the GS2 today (without ICS), I will get the ICS update when it is released in the few months?
Thanks
anonymous 15 December, 2011 17:30

anonymous 16 December, 2011 16:12
i think S2 will get before some of the other smartphones. probably, since samsung was part of the development of the galaxy nexus. they may have started their works earlier. I expect touchwiz 5. hope there are more 3d animations.
anonymous 17 December, 2011 07:03
I can't wait for the ICS update on mah galaxy S II
Android3-IOS 18 December, 2011 04:50
My missus' old Nexus S just got updated to ICS 4.0.3 this morning and it looks superb with most apps getting a brilliant, intuitive makeover. Meanwhile my Samsung S2 is still sitting on Gingerbread 2.3.6; come on Samsung, get your damn act together!!!
anonymous 22 December, 2011 01:21
just updated to 2.3.6 gingerbread lastnite...cant really see any new features...except blue blur when scrolling...but i can say battery life seems to be improved..oh and also memory seems to have been increased a bit...
anonymous 22 December, 2011 12:28
We should expect ICS before EAster 2012
anonymous 25 December, 2011 06:54
Pls i cannot wait
anonymous 25 December, 2011 08:35
Are rumours true that this is now not going to happen?
anonymous 27 December, 2011 02:39
please give me a date!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anonymous 28 December, 2011 00:32
The official version will suck (TouchWhiz = yuck), developers at XDA are close to getting a fully working vanilla ICS.
anonymous 29 December, 2011 16:42
The reason Samsung will update this phone is they know they have made a winner that even they will have problems to build a better phone but as this phone is even faster on the web tham my very expensive i7 chipped Ethos Acer laptop upgrading the CPU wont and cant make it any faster than this device can do now and add the latest OS to 4.0 will only make it mega outstanding.
anonymous 15 January, 2012 09:21
how will we get it updated?
anonymous 20 January, 2012 17:43
Heyy guys can someone give me a samsung account because i cant sign up and i want to update my s2.pls
anonymous 25 January, 2012 11:43
I just want the pink spot to go away, hopefully the update will deal with this issue.
anonymous 1 February, 2012 01:27
I am using the leaked version of ICS on Samsung Galaxy since a few days ago. Seems to work well and is noticeably faster than Gingerbread specially on the web browsing. Google it you will find it easy. Its probably better to wait for the official version though.
anonymous 8 February, 2012 14:35
Has the official version been released yet? I still have 6months + of warranty and do not want to forfeit it by trying the leaked one.
anonymous 19 February, 2012 13:25
I hate it a fanstic phone that takes 30 years for an update
anonymous 26 February, 2012 17:58
