Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich how-to guide

CNET How To

Like a relentless technological bulldozer, Android continues to steamroll all before it. Google's mobile operating system has undergone some radical changes during its relatively short lifespan, and the most recent iteration, 4.0 for those of you that like numbers, Ice Cream Sandwich for those who prefer daft codenames, is the most polished yet.

The problem is, this latest flavour of Android is currently exclusive to Google's Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S phones. Manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson, HTC and Samsung have all made positive noises about updating their current handsets to 4.0, but that process takes time. For those of you that simply cannot wait -- and happen to own the rather excellent Samsung Galaxy S2, which we decided was the best phone of 2011 -- salvation is at hand.

This handy guide will show you how to install Ice Cream Sandwich on your beloved blower, allowing you to reap the benefits of enhanced speed and functionality, months before Samsung officially gets around to releasing it.

Firmware caution

As is always the case when flashing firmware and mucking around with your phone's operating system, it's best to exercise some caution, lest your expensive mobile becomes an equally expensive -- but rather less functional -- brick. Installing this update will invalidate your manufacturer warranty, and CNET UK, its employees, their immediate families and even their pets take absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for any damage you may inflict on your phone as a result of following this guide.

It's also worth noting that the firmware we link to in this guide isn't 100 per cent finished -- this is work-in-progress stuff, so there may be bugs and instability present. Another thing to note is that if your phone has root access, you will lose root when you install the update. Root is not required to flash the firmware, however.

Assuming you still have the stomach for the job, let's get cracking.

Step 1: Grab the relevant files

Before you do anything, make sure you've downloaded and installed the official Kies application from Samsung's site. This contains all of the relevant USB drivers that allow your Galaxy S2 to communicate properly with your computer. You'll also need Odin, which is the sneaky piece of software that allows you to flash the firmware to your phone. Point your browser here to obtain that.

How to get Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S2 - step 1

Another vital thing to remember is that you'll need to enable USB debugging from within your phone's settings. Go to Settings > Applications > Development, and tick the box that says 'Enable USB Debugging'.

Now for the important bit -- the ICS firmware itself. This particular file is based on Android 4.0.3, which is the very latest version (so fresh that the shiny new Galaxy Nexus doesn't even have it at the time of writing). The file might take a while to download as it's over 300MB of content. Once it's done, extract the RAR file on your computer. It's password protected, and the password is: 'samfirmware.com'.

Step 2: Configure Odin

Open up the Odin app that you downloaded previously. A big screen with lots of scary options should appear, but mop those beads of sweat from your brow and take some deep breaths -- we're here to help you through this, soldier.

How to get Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S2 - step 2

First up, click the button that says PDA. Find the ICS firmware that you extracted and locate the file that has 'CODE' in its name. Select it and Odin will prep it for installation. Next up is the Phone file, which should be in the same folder and has 'MODEM' in its name. The final piece of the puzzle is the CSC file, which has 'CSC' in its moniker. Easy, eh?

Step 3: Put your Galaxy S2 into download mode

With all that tiresome file selection out of the way, we can get around to the exciting business of actually putting the ruddy firmware onto the phone, where it belongs. Make sure your Galaxy S2 is completely switched off, and then press the power, volume down and home buttons simultaneously. You'll see a dire warning displayed on the screen about voiding your warranty -- essentially the final warning before you proceed -- but simply press the volume up button to skip it (assuming you still have the courage, that is).

How to get Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S2 - step 3

Take your trusty USB cable and connect your phone to your PC. Odin should detect and recognise the handset, and you'll see a filled-in yellow box where it says COM. If nothing happens, it's probably because you didn't listen to us at the beginning and failed to install Kies. D'oh.

How to get Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S2 - step 4

Step 4: Flash the ICS firmware

Once all the stars are aligned and you've finished sacrificing your livestock to appease the Korean deity Samsung, you can tap the button that says 'Start'.

If the gods favour you, Odin will flash the Android 4.0.3 firmware to your Galaxy S2.

So there you have it. Ice Cream Sandwich on your Galaxy S2. To be honest, it doesn't look massively different from 2.3 on the Galaxy S2, as Samsung has covered the OS with its usual TouchWiz UI.

But you'll find a raft of improvements as well as cool things like a fully-functioning data monitor and a new multi-tasking menu.

It's a taste of the future, today.

This is a ics firmwarefor the sgs2 thats in active development and will have plenty of bugs in , and might change radically from the end product, be aware of that if you download it, forums suggest that this is relatively stable though but there is already an updated version available from samfirmware

will this work on the galaxy s2 t989 or is this only for the i900 (international version)?

LP2 is not quite the latest available. I updated my S2 to LP6 yesterday, and it seems very fast and quite stable. It is certainly much more stable than the previous ICS build I used. It pays to keep an eye out on various forums to keep track of what is a very fast moving target!

Can confirm this works OK, a bit of work to get the market working with two accounts but this seems to have settled down now. Also the occasional restart is needed. Fantastic to be on 4.0.3 though, some nice UI features and nice and fast.

I've heard some people are having trouble connecting to wifi, as well as a few other problems. Is there any way to revert back if I encounter these problems?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 January, 2012 13:01

I did it and it works perfectly! Two problems however, android market is blocked and Kies on PC also doesn't link to the phone. Other than that no major problems? anyone know when the Official ICS gets released?

Will this work on a three branded GS2

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 27 January, 2012 19:57

It's also worth checking out the CM9 rom being developed by Codeworkx for the SGS II; although also in Alpha testing, many are reporting this is a more reliable build. Another fast-moving target, not fully-functional yet, probably 1-2 months away from release candidate; but already smooth and slick, it's a tantilising taste of Android 4.0

Everything is working nicely for me except Browser sync. I was really looking forward to seeing my Chrome desktop bookmarks synced with my SGS2 but I guess I'll have to wait...

If you use Microsoft exchange server email for work DO NOT INSTALL! (It crashes a lot)

If you do not care about Microsoft exchange server, then this build is stable and will work for you.

Personally, I switched back to 2.3 and will wait for the official Ice Cream Sandwich release.

Please ignore my post above, it works fine without it.

Cnet have done a very good job on explaining how to install this official ICS rom. and I installed it fully, but it's not as smooth as I'd like it to be, so I'm going to revert back to the previous one and will wait it out til the official one comes out.

I can comfirm this works! It is running on my Galaxy S2 UK unlocked phone, installed using Windows Ultimate 64-bit with Kies installed (had to play about a bit with the drivers to get Odin to see it properly though). I will try to update my Galaxy Tab 10.1 shortly with the same firmware.

Quick question - does the installation wipe all the data from your phone and require you to set it up as new?

No Calendar application and no google calendar sync. Has anybody noticed that? Few applications which are downloaded from market do not even start up,

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 30 January, 2012 17:08

Probably worth while adding a warning to backup your apps using something like Astro before starting, as all downloaded apps will disappear.

Apart from that a good, quick tutorial, thanks

Hi all,
I've downloaded and installed this these instructions are very good and ICS feels much smoother, although I went to the LP6 version - the GPS doesn't work. Is there anyway that I can downgrade to my original ROM? But the ROM is good in all other ways. Thank you in advance.

anonymous's avatar

All you must do is find your original stock rom and flash it just as you flashed ICS

anonymous 1 February, 2012 15:08

Hi, I have flashed the latest one and the one before which is available through this website. I like it but I would like to go back to a more stable gingerbread I'm in the UK and on Three. I have downloaded I9100XWKI8_I9100H3GKI2_H3G from samfirmware.com which I think is correct. The problem I am having is when I unzipped the file it doesn't have the MODEM file or CSC files. Does anybody know where I can get those file from or can I use the ones from the ICS download (I doubt it) Please help me someone :-D

Hello people, I have tried it on my Galaxy S2 on the 31st of January and I am very disappointed. Batterylife is reduced to 4/5 hours, menus lag most of the times. Not every app is compatible on ICS such as YouTube's app. it just WONT work on ICS for now until later updated.

I would wait for a more stable version, or a hacked rom from XDA. Just my 2 cents, perhaps somebody else got it to work without lagging, but right now I'm going back to VillainRom - The best rom for SGS2 in my opinion.

Again, these are my personal findings, feel free to criticize in a normal manner. :)

anonymous 3 February, 2012 02:43

Does it work on the samsung S2 g version? Can someone tell me please?? !

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 February, 2012 20:53

Just a word to the wise.
These roms are NOT meant for UK release at the moment. This means that although they work fine on uk phones, you may encounter problems with the market.
Some apps available in he UK, like the Natwest banking app, disappear from the marketplace.
Not in all cases, but in mine. This is why using custom roms not specifically built for UK S2's can cause issues.
So as a heads up, if you find apps not appearing in the marketplace, or googles online web version of the market says the app is incompatible with your phone...theres why.

anonymous 7 February, 2012 10:23

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 9 February, 2012 08:44

Everything works fine. I could connect to exchange server too to read emails and sync calendar & contacts.

Only one issue. The bellow message pops up after booting:

"Unfortunately the process com.android.phone stopped."

Iv down loaded the newest version (XXLPB) of ICS and apart from having to re-enter your 3G settings (sent to me by T-mobile so was easy) it seems very stable and with titanium back up everything is a breeze :)

To the guy who asked about reverting back to Three UK ROM,

You don't need the CSC or Modem files to revert back to Gingerbread. You just flash the PDA file.

Have you thought about going back to the Open Europe ROM? keep the Three Firmware on file in case you ever need a warranty repair. I would recommend you download the Open Europe 2.3.6 firmware. It takes away all the apps that 3 install (such as the Sims and Monopoly) as well as will enable you to get the official ICS update quicker when it finally does come out.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 February, 2012 15:57

Thanks to the guy above me, your advice helped so much. I live in SA so I've reverted back to the original ROM cause i need the stability.

BTW I just want to say that this is probably the best and most easy instructions on the Web.
Thank you to every person's contribution.
