Samsung Galaxy S2 hits 10 million sales

Samsung's Galaxy S2 smart phone has passed the 10 million worldwide sales mark, making it a very popular mobile indeed.

In late July we reported that Samsung had shifted 5 million of the Android-powered blighters. That was eight weeks ago, suggesting the incredibly slender S2 is continuing to go great guns.

Those 10 million devices appear to represent channel sales, so it doesn't mean there are 10 million S2 users out there, just that Samsung has flogged that many to retailers. But it does indicate that demand for the phone remains high.

We were extremely impressed with the S2 when we gave it our exhaustive review treatment, praising the impossibly slim and light build, as well as a powerful dual-core processor and a screen so bright you can still see it with your eyes closed. Probably.

The camera's not bad either, capturing natty snaps at an 8-megapixel resolution. A glorious all-rounder then, and a phone that promises to make the bearer feel the toast of the town.

There's just one fly in Samsung's phone-scented ointment -- Apple. The Cupertino tech giant is bombarding Samsung with a lethal barrage of lawsuits, which have already seen the Samsung Galaxy S2 banned from sale, and tablets such as the upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.7 yanked from trade-show floors.

The iPhone 5 is expected to hit within the next few weeks, and we'll be keeping our expert eyes on proceedings to see whether Apple's newest creation can put a dent in the S2's popularity.

Apple clearly think this is a great mobile, hence their efforts to stifle it. This smacks of MS versus Netscape all over again. Oh, and why oh why did the boffins at Google choose an OS so full of patent loopholes it has more air than swiss cheese.

I have a S2 and I love it. I'm very keen to see how good the iPhone 5 will be against my baby.

I don't understand why there has to be this big clash and such polarised opinions (between Apple / Android / etc) - more excellently produced phones means CHOICE for the consumer - and especially with the GS2 - it really sets the bar high for Android users - which means companies like Moto, SonyE, etc. have to raise their games to keep up... which in turn leads to better competition / newer designs / more features for us!

What I don't like is Apple trying to stifle the market with their legal challenges - consumers want CHOICE not one large multi-billion profit-making machine telling us what we can / cannot buy...

Samsung has truly made an awesome smartphone. I have to say I have been frustrated with the shortcomings of the some of the leading phones. I have an iPhone, recently purchased the Motorola Photon, and replaced the HTC Evo all which impressive specs that just didn't perform as I expected. So,I know phones and I hard to please. My search is finally over I am happy and truly feel that I am not sacrificing one feature for another. Galaxy S2 hands down out performs in very way the others I have used and I feel like a new standard has been set.

comparing 3 versions of the iphone to this phone I have not found anything that is worthy an lawsuit from apple. They must fear that they can not top what Samsung has done. .

I ditched my iPhone recently and took a chance on a Galaxy S2. I was always the one who thought Android was a horrible OS but I have to say I am really loving my S2.

@ Simon Fong - couldn't agree more!

I've had my S2 nearly a month and love everything about it - coming from an HTC Hero it really is a leap forwards. My missus has an iPhone 3GS and is seriously contemplating an S2 herself now, though I'm sure the iPhone 5 will also be an impressive piece of kit. Live and let live, people!
