Samsung Galaxy S owners on Vodafone have joined a growing list of apoplectic Android phone owners who've unwittingly downloaded bloatware.
In a 12-page-and-counting Vodafone forum thread, Galaxy S owners blasted the operator over a firmware update received through Samsung's Kies software. Some people thought it was Android 2.2, but instead it contained a number of unwanted Vodafone goodies, such as a branded splash screen, a 360 shop and update app, and a number of trial games.
There are also indications that some apps don't work properly or are non-removable. Others posters have even suggested that the update has caused reception and network problems.
Vodafone similarly upset HTC Desire owners last month. They too found themselves the unfortunate recipients of bloatware apps. In that case, Vodafone had to backpedal quickly, promising that it would remove all the bloatware with the Android 2.2 update.
There are a number of angry user comments on the forum. M0rd0 said: "All you are managing to do with your badly animated splash screen, and badly written apps, is destroy the customer experience."
"I've had a contract with you now for almost six years. If the next Froyo update doesn't clear away your applications, I will return the handset and take my custom elsewhere. This is a lesson that you, as a company, need to learn. Branding of handsets achieves nothing, except to frustrate and alienate your customer base," M0rd0 continued.
A Vodafone spokesperson replied: "I do understand your frustrations in regards to this issue and can assure you that we do understand how serious this issue is, to many of you. Basically, what we've been doing is emailing some customers who purchased their devices unbranded but have received the branding update.
"The purpose of these emails was to obtain IMEI information so we could feed this back to our devices team and Samsung for investigation. At the moment, we are currently awaiting the outcome of this investigation. However, we will provide an official update as and when we receive it."
It looks like Galaxy S owners will probably have to wait until Android 2.2 comes out before the bloatware can be removed. Vodafone has, however, kept quiet as to when the Android 2.2 update will be available.

Typical Vodafone rubbish. They do it because they place their aggressive marketing policies above user experience. I don't actually think anyone likes the Vodafone 'experience' with this ridiculous bloatware or trials to expensive games, dating sites etc, it's just horrible. It seems no other carrier insults their customer base quite like Vodafone does. I'm on Vodafone and despite good handsets costing a lot of money I refuse to buy a phone from them and would rather splash out on a sim-free phone. Expensive but worth it as you don't have all this hassle.

I'd better keep on banging the "buy your phone unlocked" drum - no SIM lock, no branding crap, no 2-year contract, first to receive updates, and in my case, it's worked out cheaper! :)

Vodafone has always been the biggest culprit in the branding saga. It ruined countless phones for me, including my K800 and Nokia N95.
Branding is Satan's own work --let's get them to stop with it.

I have an unbranded and sim free Galaxy S from T mobile.

Do vodafone not realise that most people can't stand their bloatware?
They should launch it on Android Market, and see how many people download it out of choice instead of forcing it on us!
I have an unbranded vodafone Galaxy S, and won't be upgradig anything for sometime yet.
They are muppets!

This is ridiculous. I have a galaxy s which has no sim lock and is unbranded. However, all this bloatware has been pushed to my phone. Even if you have an unbranded handset, don't upgrade your firmware, it will get bloated!!

I am not happy. My Galaxy S was completely 'clean' before this update spoiled it! These are extremely expensive pieces of kit - they need to be 'sexy' - like an iPhone4 - get with the program Vodafone!
The splashscreens are hideous, and the apps are non-removable from the built in list of applications (although the icons can be removed from the home pages).
Incidentally - I love the photo used to illustrate this story - the Galaxy S showing critical battery situation - something mine seems to be in soon after its unplugged...

Why would anyone trust Vodafone again after they did this TWICE. First with the HTC Desire and then with the Galaxy S. Clearly they don't listen to their customers and just try it on to see if they can get away with their rubbish.

"At the moment, we are currently awaiting the outcome of this investigation"

Hmmm Vodaphone just never learn do they?!
We can get the Galaxy S from anywhere, if we choose to use Vodafone for our call plans that is exactly what we expect not unsightly pointless Vodaphone apps, get with it quick or people will get away from you faster!
If we want something, we can go to android Market Place or Samsung Apps, if you want to offer apps, offer them, don't force them.
By all means provide a widget for a 'Vodaphone App store' and give your user base a little credit by allowing them to make an informed decision whether they want something from you or not.
I remember a famous slogan from another well know telecommunications company that said 'Its good to talk' well here is one for you Vodaphone 'Its good to listen' we are very very unhappy so start listening and give us our once elegant Galaxy S back the way it was before you performed your lobotomy
Many friends and family come to me seeking help and advice on technical things including phones and best contracts, I have generally recommended Vodaphone, when at time others were offering slightly cheaper plans, because you used to listen and care about your customers, now you seem to be hard of hearing or maybe just plain arrogant?
If you stop listening to us we will assume you no longer care and will take our custom to someone who will listen and not treat us as if we require nannying from you because you think you know us better than we know ourselves.
Stop now, the last government made the same mistake and look where they are now! A lesson to be learnt perhaps? Or are those ears and ego of yours beyond help? We can make our own decisions and don't need you holding our hands making them for us, we don't want your help if we do we can ask for it thank you.
