Samsung Galaxy S 2 vs iPhone 4: Android and iOS titans clash

To many, the iPhone 4 represents the pinnacle of gadgetry. Ask any iPhone owner and they'll happily slide the Jobsian Jesus-phone out their pockets and start showing you apps, before getting distracted and wondering off, pawing at the screen and muttering to themselves. The iPhone sailed through our Greatest Gadget of the 21st Century tournament last year, crushing tech heavyweights like the Xbox 360 and Robosapien 'neath its aluminium-edged boots.

But then there's Android. Growing slicker with every iteration, Google's fantastic mobile operating system has found traction with just about every tech manufacturer, smashing down Apple's walled garden and pouring white spirit on the petunias. The Samsung Galaxy S 2 might just be the greatest Android device yet -- a smart phone of staggering power and beauty, could it be the mobile that finally, finally unseats the iPhone 4?

We've stuck the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Galaxy S 2 side by side in the photo gallery above -- click through to see our two competitors side by side, and make up your own mind about which mobile looks better.

Design

We were immensely impressed with the Galaxy S 2's design. We've postulated that Samsung must have access to some kind of anti-gravity testing lab, because somehow it's crammed a vast amount of high-end tech into a smart phone that weighs only 115g. Very impressive, but even more mind-boggling is that the Galaxy S 2 is just 8.49mm thick -- about a millimetre thinner than the incredibly slender iPhone 4.

Some people will hold the S 2 and say it feels plasticky. That's because it's plastic. But while we normally enjoy a reassuring metal frame, we can forgive the use of plastic in this instance because the build quality of the S 2 is very high. We didn't notice its slim chassis creaking at all, even when we applied some fairly serious pressure. Great stuff.

The iPhone 4 is heavier at 137g, and is 9.3mm thick. It's no porker though: this is one sultry slice of smart phone. A glass back gives the iPhone 4 a pleasant, weighty feel, and the strip of metal around the edges gives it a cool, classy feeling in your palm.

Metal volume and lock keys keep things feeling sturdy, and if that circular home button hasn't reached icon status by now, we don't know what qualifies. The S 2 oozes quality, but for pure tech luxury, the iPhone 4 can't be beat.

Or so it would seem. Anyone rooting (no pun intended) for the Galaxy S 2 will have been reading the last few paragraphs fidgeting in their seats, because there is -- of course -- something about the iPhone 4 we haven't mentioned yet.

Antennagate. A design crisis so severe it made Steve Jobs say sorry, this was the revelation that holding the iPhone 4 in the 'wrong' way could ruin your reception faster than a drunk uncle at your wedding. By having the iPhone 4's antenna built into the outside of the phone it meant fleshy human digits fatally attenuate the signal, causing dropped calls and many a frown among the iPhone community.

That such a massive flaw had been allowed to slip through Apple's testing was humiliating for the Cupertino company, and even though we prefer the look of the iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S 2, we can't in good conscience call the iPhone 4 well designed.

Design winner: Samsung Galaxy S 2.

Display

The Galaxy S 2 has a much bigger display than Apple's phone, measuring a stonking 4.3 inches on the diagonal. It's amazingly bright too, searing a vision of heaven into our retinas within the first few seconds of turning the phone on. The Super AMOLED Plus display looks fantastic (despite having a stupid name), and the sheer size of the 480x800-pixel screen means photos, websites and videos all look fabulous. It's a glorious display all round.

The iPhone 4's display measures only 3.5-inches, but as Doctor Niko 'Nick' Tatopoulos -- the man who floored Godzilla in 1998 -- would tell you, size isn't everything. It might not be as big, but the iPhone 4's display still makes us weep tears of joy, almost a full year after we first clapped eyes on it. With 640x960 pixels at 326 pixels per inch, the retina display is so pin-sharp you have to really, really squint to make out individual pixels.

It's a masterpiece in display tech, and we've lost count of the times we've found ourselves peering distractedly at particularly intricate icons, or zooming in as far as possible in Web pages. Incredibly comfortable to read text on, no other manufacturer has managed to produce a screen of this quality.

Display winner: iPhone 4.

Hardware

The iPhone 4 is a great collection of hardware. Its A4 chip keeps the whole system ticking along nicely, and it's able to keep different apps running with little noticeable slowdown. Intense 3D games are no bother.

The camera is impressive too. Five megapixels of portable photography pleasure, with 720p recording, the iPhone's camera might be low on features but we've been very pleased with the quality of images it's able to produce.

The Galaxy S 2's camera, despite packing a hefty 8-megapixel sensor, isn't quite as deft when it comes to grabbing gorgeous shots. But it does bring 1080p video recording to the table, besting the iPhone 4 in the camcorder stakes.

The S 2 may also be the fastest Android phone we've ever held -- it certainly feels it -- thanks to a 1.2GHz processor. That muscular chip makes all the difference, and we've never experienced Android running quite so smoothly. There's no lag or stutter in the menu or homescreen transitions, and we struggled to slow the S 2 down -- even with loads of apps open, more apps downloading in the background and Flash video playing in the browser it kept on trucking, with no signs of struggling. We can't argue with that.

Hardware winner: Samsung Galaxy S 2.

Battery life

What use is a smart phone if it doesn't last 5 minutes? Battery tech hasn't quite managed to keep pace with advances in mobile processing and digital displays, and as a result it's rare for any modern mobile to handle a day's intensive use without having to suckle on its power charger like a dehydrated hamster.

A straight battery drain test in this situation would be a little pointless, because frankly you'll end up using your phone for different things depending on whether you own an Android or iOS device. On the one hand, running loads of apps simultaneously, Wi-Fi tethering, playing Flash video and numerous other things Android phones can handle will drain the S 2 in next to no time, while graphically intensive gaming or downloading songs from iTunes on the iPhone 4 will equally exhaust your power reserves.

We're left with no choice to call this round a draw. Frankly they're both as bad as each other.

Battery winner: Nobody.

Software

iOS and Android. Android and iOS. We could try to argue which is better, but our time would probably be more productively spent teaching our goldfish to tapdance. The fact is both operating systems have their strengths and weaknesses, and you have to figure out which is best for you based on what you want your mobile to do.

If you want freedom, regular upgrades and the ability to fiddle with your mobile's homescreen and install whatever crazy apps you choose, Android is best. That's why it's often described as geeky -- an almost infinite amount of tinkering is possible, and there's the opportunity to really make a device your own.

iOS is best if you want an uncomplicated, structured experience. You won't find labyrinthine menus or configuration options here, and the apps you can install have all passed under the watchful eye of Apple. Downloading music and movies is incredibly simple -- if sometimes expensive -- and the whole operating system moves with a slickness that makes sliding through menus a genuine pleasure.

But freedom is limited, and a continued lack of Flash support in the browser is a frequent roadblock for online adventurers. Perhaps you object ideologically to the walled-garden approach to tech, or Apple demanding huge cuts for in-app purchases. We'd understand if you did.

There's one aspect, however, in which iOS unequivocally still beats Android, and that's apps. Don't get us wrong, we've played with plenty of brilliant Android apps, but the Apple App Store wins every time.

Finding apps is simple thanks to a brilliant mobile version of iTunes that's much easier to use than the full desktop version, while purchasing and downloading is simple and reliable. Anyone who enjoys mobile gaming will have their heads turned by the App Store's bounty of brilliant mobile games, and the sheer number of excellent productivity tools means you'll never run out of new apps to try.

We're not sure why the Android Market hasn't managed to match the iPhone's app offering. Perhaps it's simply that developers gravitate toward iOS, with more money to be made from an audience used to paying. Or maybe Apple's strict approval process means the overall quality of apps on offer is more encouraging. Perhaps there are just as many great Android apps out there, but the mechanisms for finding and categorising them aren't as refined.

Whatever the reason, searching, purchasing, downloading and using apps on the iOS platform is simply more entertaining. For the app offering alone, we're giving this one to the iPhone 4.

Software winner: iPhone 4.

Conclusion

It may sound like a cop-out -- it is a cop-out -- but we simply can't choose a victor here. We feel the same about these two phones as we did when we reviewed the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. They're both fantastic bits of kit, but in different ways, and which one is 'better' will be subjectively based on what you want from a mobile device. It might come down to something as simple as which shape you prefer, or which network has the best deal.

When hardware is this refined, and software this polished, we'd ask you to decide for yourselves. There's no winner in this match-up, but there's also no loser, and whichever phone you opt for you can't really go wrong.

But with Android growing faster than anyone could have predicted, and a new iPhone only months away, the game could change in the blink of an eye. Don't touch that dial.

You have to give the battery to the Samsung if for only one reason, you can take a spare battery with you and change it when you want.

Both the phones are great but I feel Apple iphone 4 wins here in the battle with Samsung Galaxy S2 as the former's battery life is far better. what is the use of the smart phone if it doesn't last. After having the latest gadget in hand, keeping an extra battery for it in the pocket is not what is expected. Although Samsung Galaxy S2 is lighter than Apple iphone, it has affected its performance.

nelsoma's avatar

nelsoma 11 May, 2011 13:40

What is interesting, is that were it not for 'antennagate' the iPhone would have won in the design category. It also won the software and screen category and therefore would have won the contest outright, not to mention that the S2 is almost a full year younger than the iPhone 4 and consequently takes advantage of improved specs and hardware that allow it to win in the hardware category.

All in all, hardly a brilliant case to support the S2 if all Samsung can bring to the table is something almost as good a full year later on.

I reckon the iPhone has the lead here becase you can use it and everyone around will know that you are sound but with the galaxy s, everyone will think you are a geek and girls in particulatr will be very turned off. that is just my experience

How can anyone say S2 has a better design. It's ugly, just because it's thinner IT'S PLASTIC I don't care if it 'creaks' or not it will scratch and it's just not a quality material. As for the Antenna gate, never had a single problem.

Are you serious?? You can't find a winner here!! Samsung Galaxy S II is the best phone till date. Apple with its closed walls and egoistic principles (by blocking flash, not allowing transfer of files via bluetooth, charging for every free app on other platforms etc.) will not be able to do much even with iphone 5....

Ahh, nothing like some good old bias from a leading technological website. Seriously, guys, the iPhone 4 is washed up: pay no mind to these daft CNET people. They're probably still within the bounds of a 24 month agreement with Apple, making them unable to admit new SUPERPHONES like the SGS2 are far superior to outmoded Apple smartphones like the iPhone 4.

s2 beats the iphone in every criteria lets see
-through both the battery's are awful, the s2 at least gives the option of changing it
-android is more snappier and feature packed then ios by a mile
-the hardware is almost completely future proof with every thing just of the shelves

its cnet stupid obsession with apple that turns a blind eye to this

4G capability, iPhone does not. The Galaxy has a 4.3" screen and the iPhone CAN'T produce the retina display on more than 3.5" display. You can buy another battery and use it as a spare for the Galaxy. Can you do that on the iPhone? It's an option. You don't have to deal with iTunes and you get wireless updates. In 2011 you still need to connect a cable to get updates? C'mon, it's Apple's way to sucker you into buying overpriced content! WAKE the F*** UP! The Galaxy is rumored to cost around $200 or less, that's the lowest priced iPhone. Google turn-by-turn navigation is not available on iPhone and it's FREE. No Flash on iPhone. No widgets and no live wallpapers on iPhone. Pathetic review Luke. Do your homework or stop getting kickbacks from Apple. When we wanna hear a bunch of Bull**** we can consult our politicians. Obviously you got a job because of your writing skills and not because of your tech knowledge.

I am a massive Apple fan, however I cannot deny the credits of the Samsung Galaxy SII.

I feel this review comparison is giving the iPhone 4 too much favouritism. In my opinion the Samsung wins in every department apart from the Apps of itunes our superior.

I have no doubt the iphone 5 will give the Galaxy SII a run for its money, however to claim that the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy II are evenly matched is simply embarrassing. Lets give the Galaxy Samsung SII the credit it deserves.

anonymous 11 May, 2011 16:20

I keep seeing people write that both battery's are awful, well i have a S II and the battery has been very good and has easily lasted a day. I can't compare it to the Iphone as i have never had one but even if they are the same, the S II is better because it gives you the option of a spare battery.

So let me get this right: samsung have made a phone that's (arguably) better than a one year old phone phone apple?

Wow - that's some achievement.

Let's see how the galaxy s2 looks in 6 months when it's lost 60% of it's resale value.

suj1's avatar

Im sure most of us would use the Samsung screen to watch a movie or browse the net over the iphone. Just cos apple got better resolution does not make it better when theres no visible blur or pixelation on the samsung one anyway. Overall this review favours Apple a tad too much. Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the best phone now. Maybe the Iphone 5 will beat it in a few months but at the moment would have to be the samsung over the iphone 4 without a doubt

Anonymous's avatar

Strange isn't it. a phone that doesn't work unless you wrap it in rubber and rumour has it the next one will have a bigger screen and a redesigned antenna, so who's playing catch'up, or could it be copy copying the copy, just gotta laugh ant you haha
by the way I got both and they both have faults but the G2 just beats the IP4 in my book.

SGS2 smashes iphone4
-bluetooth 3.0 faster, send anything to anyone
-andoid app mp3 music download AWESOME, free
-andriod appTubemate, download youtube videos
-standard file explorer
-4.3" SA+, brighter, more colourful, bigger, blacker blacks.
-wireless N, new 5ghz connection
-swype input
-1.2ghz DUEL CORE!!
-8MP camera with flash, 2MP front camera
-full HD video record+playback
-micro sd up to 32GB on top of 32GB standard
-NFC chip
-flash player
-no itunes, drag and drop files
-thinner, lighter, faster
-live wallpapers
-replacable battery, also larger capacity
-better notification system

The only things iphone has going for it:
-app store larger
-retina display has more pixels
-easy to use

The iphone4 has been left in the dust!!! if you dont think so your an iphone fanboy holding onto apples former dominance. Apple has been demolished, i dont even think the iphone 5 will catch up, maybe iphone6. Iphone 5 wont have NFC, will have A5 chip 1ghz duel core, a bit behind already. I highly doubt the iphone5 will match all the specs, let along surpass them. As for micro sd, file explorer, drag + drop, bluetooth anything to anyone, swype, and those android apps i mentioned... Iphone will NEVER HAVE these, apple are behind and unless they open up there system and relax their tight ass policies, thats where they will stay.

How do you work that out. People have mentioned the reason why the Samsung is better battery wise, because it gives you the option to have a spare. That alone could tip it in Samsungs favour, let alone the list of other reasons people have given.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 12 May, 2011 14:31

what android phones fail to realize is that it doesn't come down to the tech specs. The reason the iphone is so popular is becasue of the whole experience. ask the average joe and has no clue what the specs mean. what people want is a phone that works, is easy to use and lets them do all the things they want to do. there fore android can come up with a super phone but still doesnt get what the consumer wants.

Nick Hide 12 May, 2011 14:44

You still have to buy the extra battery; its battery life out of the box is still rubbish. As Luke says, 'which one is 'better' will be subjectively based on what you want from a mobile device'. Many people want an enjoyable user experience and top-quality apps more than a long list of features.

I fail to see how an article that concludes 'whichever phone you opt for you can't really go wrong' could possibly be accused of bias.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 12 May, 2011 15:16

Very interesting comparison and I actually thought fairly balanced in its views. I find it fascinating how the Android fangeeks get so upset when their beloved OS doesn't win everything. I too have both an Iphone 4 and Galaxy and I hate the samsung. Not the hardware which is good but the software is horrible. It reminds me of windows mobile which was incredibly customisable but a pain to use especially if something went wrong.

IOS is plain and simple to use and works end of story. The Apps available are miles better in quality and I can get flash if I need to via the Skyfire browser. This was my choice but I have no problem with those of you that prefer Android.

Most importantly Apple's closed system provides security. We've already seen viruses written for Android and this will only become more prevalent as more Android phones are sold due to the open nature of the software.

I've no doubt that Android will be the no 1 OS worldwide as so many manufacturers now adopt it and include it now in lower end phones also. I actually think that will be good for Apple as it will push Apple to even greater heights, and also maintain Apple's "cool" factor; something that no android phone will ever match.

iPhone for me. On occasion, Android phones win on paper but the iPhone 'just works' and you can just get on enjoying its features while too much time is spent on Android configuration. Buying an Android phone is like buying the car and having to tune the engine yourself. Too much aggravation.

these iCrap fans don't bring up any good points. the only reason they like it is because of apple's brainwashing advertisements. horrible comparison. the thing that made me the angriest was the screen. put even a galaxy s 1 next to an iphone and look at the same colorful picture. the iphone looks almost grey compared to the super amoled. and android is way more customization than iphone. hell you can make it look like an iphone if you want. and the argument that plastic is bad sucks. i don't want glass that cracks in a 1 foot fall on the back of my phone. i don't get how he only said 1.2 GHz. well, talk about being a neutral huh? well, first off, i am an Android user and i've played with the iPhone4 a lot of times. to compare SGS2 with iPhone 4, i guess u guys really dont have much better things to do.... and the way u review it, it's even funnier.... when u compare a 1000cc car and a 1200cc car with turbo and with better torque, it really shows how a 1000cc fanboy u r. well, i do agree that the App Store still win against the Market but apart from that, there is nothing that u can say that the iPhone4 is superior to the SGS2. and when u compare to App Store to Market, it's not even relevant to a phone to phone comparison. if u do, why there's no talk about customisation and widgets and shortcuts and launchers and UIs which is a lot more better than iPhone's..... if u compare it that way, the iPhone3gs will still be better than SGS2, well, then might as well say there is no phone better than an iPhone, no comparison needed.... and for all these subjective issues like design (i would prefer plastic+lighweight+lower SARS>glass/steel+heavy+heavy SARS, cuz it's always in my pocket!) etc etc etc, we can all see where ur subjectiveness went.... well, luckily i didnt bookmark u guys, just stumbled upon this 'review', so dont worry, i wont be coming back for any reviews, lolz, unless for Apple products that is....

I have vowed not to buy an Apple product after they choose to disable my hardware (ipod touch 2nd gen) due to jailbreak and downloading "unofficial apps" cough, cough. Apple have you by the balls, they are able to periodically stop your device working forcing you to connect to itunes and then use itunes to put data in the ipod/phone so stop it even resetting to factory default, in other words your device will never work again. I thought it was just me until they did the same thing to my friends iphone, he can only receive incoming calls his contacts are lost for ever.

I have a galaxy s2 and had a galaxy s prior to that and my wife a desire. The iphone has by far the better apps and if you have a lot of money to spend on them then get an iphone. But if you want freedom, to play whatever video format you want, music you want, you don't want to have to convert your stuff into mp4s. How about putting files on you SD card on any PC you like without having to be restricted to one and having to wait for itunes to sync all the time, that used to piss me off. Before i could even put music onto my ipod I had to register my card details into the appstore. If i had known these things before I wouldn't have bought it.

Another issue is if you go for iOS you are stuck with apple for life, if you have invested in the apps you can never change you hardware manufacturerer no matter how much they choose to overprice you because you have invested in the apps. If Samsung piss me off I can decide to get a HTC instead, that's freedom.

The S2 has the better hardware, it is far better than the s1 speed, looks everthing it will not break when you drop it like an iphone 4 (although the iphone is that bit more classy) but the most important advantage is the freedom and convenience that the Android platform allows and Apple chooses to negate with their overzealous greed. Only the need for certain games (buy a psp then) and specialist apps make the iphone more desirable in any sense.

Intel vs. AMD
Microsoft vs. OSX
IOS vs. Andoide

A vs B

Really come on, first of all people are people, and if you like 1 product you buy it, not only because a someone tell you that this product is best, yes people are people and will be brain washed to think this product is better, but to the end, it's YOU there have to live with your choise.
So people Smartphone is IN, so pick the Smartphone you LIKE.

-8MP camera with flash with 2MP front camera

-thinner, lighter, faster
the iphone 4 isnt as good- but iphone 5 could be better

When iPhone 5 is in the pipeline, iPhone 4 cannot be the pinnacle of gadgetry. Much more is expected in the iPhone 5.Even other companies are also coming up with new devices which will be in competition with iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S2. The craze towards Apple can be judged by the fact that Apple's iPad 2 and iPhone 4 are soon going to be out of stock as the demand is very high and comparative to that the manufacturing is slow. The craze in people for Apple is much more than Samsung although the products are equally good.

well...first of all the android fans...go fr the real world instead of the paper world.
wats the use of buyng a smartphone of arnd 550euros cost and still hvng to buy an spare battery.
believe it or nt, android fons are a sucker at battery picture.
i own iphone 4 and it battery easily lasts two days with heave gamng, wifi usage, cols and texts(counting overall to abt 15hrs of dedicated usage).
Whats the use of having evn the best smartphone if it cnt supply the juice to its specs!!

den hw many of u cn find a blutooth 3.0 compatible deivce to use d data speeds it offers.??!!!!

den hw many of u cn evn make out the difference between a 1080p video and 720p video.

moreover have u seen d quality differences.
iphone 4 due to its backlit illuminated sensor works better as a quick snapper.

Now, the biggest point.
experts have not been able to find an iphone-killer smartphone yet.
and in this case even after almost an year of iphone 4 gettng launched.

grow up!!
Accept that other platforms can have an hands-down advantage.

At the end, what matters is how u use ur phone.

Moreover no android phone hasnt been able to outrun the iphone sales.
android as an OS may have better market shares but that is nt due to wat its fon offers bt due to the fact that as a market strategy, google is givng it for free to the manufacturers!!
When the OS is free and you charge such an heavy price tag from phone, they should give atlst a 1 year old iphone 4 run for money which no deivce has been upto yet..!!

And for those who just think 4.3" super AMOLED screen is good due to its size and technology should once give a look to pixel count and if dey think pixels doesnt matter mch, den dey should not brag about 8MP of S2 over 5MP of iphone 4, leave the quality aside.

Samsung Galaxy S2 is embarrassing every iphone (4, 4s, 5 or whatever). It's a monster with its 4,3" screen, 1,2 GHz dual-core processor, its powerfull video accelelerator (you can even play most demanding 3D games), 1 GB of RAM (double that of iphone) and 8MP fullHD camera.
Samsung is fully profiting of the fact it's producing much of the hardware for every new iphone, so they can make even better hardware for their own phone.

Why can't Android fanatics just leave iPhone users to get on with enjoying their iphones?

Yeah, you think they're crap, we get that but why the constant need to piss on other people's chips?

I don't know if it's mostly readers from the US that are involved in this constant jealous bitching war but having visited the comments section of Engadget recently I can tell you I won't be back. It's horrible.

Both OS's are really similar, both are built by tech giants, both will probably use your data to sell you something so just get over it. Personally, I prefer the iPhone but I don't look Android owners with the same pity that they look at me with. Very strange.

"no other manufacturer has managed to produce a screen of this quality" --

Just to keep it real, Apple does not manufacture the retina display, LG does. Apple could get into trouble when LG ends their "retina-display-being-exclusive-to-Apple deal" and start bringing out even nicer display for their LG smartphone line (which is getting more and more impressive)

Since I got my Galaxy S at work several people have defected from iphone 4's they look horribly dated side by side and the screen on the Galaxy destroys the iphone screen. Teh super AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic LED) is so crisp and clear the iphone 4 looks dull by comparison. One of the lads at work has just bought himself out of his iphone contract after seeing my galaxy s so he can buy an s2. I game on my galaxy all day too on one charge the battery lasts I just love reading reviews of samsung products by apple fan boys who can't admit the Galaxy's have passed the iphone....

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 24 May, 2011 23:42

Oh another comment on the screens Samsung hold pattents on some of the LED tech that no other comapny can use not even Apple. No forgetting that samsung are the bigguest parts supplier for Apple I wonder if Apple intend to pay Samsung for thier mobile phone pattents you know the ones the ones every other phone company pays samsung for. Lets hope Apple are realy that stupid and don't pay and then Samsung can get an injunction against Apple and stop them making phones altogether :O

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 25 May, 2011 01:25

Yes everyone is still four years plus later trying to copy Apple's invention of the smart phone.

Easy for Samsung since the phones are in their hands and manufacturing for about a year before each is released, so yes Samsung just straight up rips off Apple's design and slaps on Googles software for a crap imitation of the real thing.

Good enough for teens and retards who can't afford a safe iPhone experience but then if you use Android your not actually able to use the thing for anything a smart phone does except pretend it's an iPhone.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 25 May, 2011 16:01

Iphone 4 has IPS LCD screen - retina display is about 3-5% better, but uses 30% more battery power than OLED.

Samsung S2 has Super AMOLED Plus - larger and crisper display colors, but has less consumption of power since it doesn't have backlighting.

If you say Iphone4 has the better display, then you cannot call it a tie on battery life. Samsung is longer lasting by default because of display usage. There is no reason to call battery a tie once you compare power savings of a dual core processor to a single core.

Objectively, the Samsung has the advantage in terms of battery life. For display, to each their own, but Iphone4 is without a doubt better.

The facts speak for themselves.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 27 May, 2011 16:16

Squabbling over which of these has the longest battery life is STUPID - neither will last very long BUT GS2 you can buy 1,2,3,4- 10? extra batteries. And, who are these people who think that the GS2 doesn't already come with a perfectly good battery??! No you don't "need" to buy a new battery, you just CAN... that is called "CHOICE" This is a word Apple owners will not have heard in a long time... unlike the rest of the world where choice and free market rule. So - if you REALLY need that extra run time... GS2 WINS hands down.

What's this I hear about Apple having to connect to a pc to get updates? Is that true?!! hahaha!!!

Re iOS vs Android, Don't like your Android launcher? Change it to a more simple one and simplify. Use only 1 home page. Simple. Job done. Don't like your iOS launcher? Tough shizzle, you are stuck with it until they decide to update you. Viruses on Android... hands up anyone here who has EVER known anyone to have a visus or malware... ooh no hands I see. What there has been Google has dealt with. Do viruses actually exsist? I had once once... 10 years ago....

Metal casing/quality of an iphone... yes looks (subjective) and feels very nice, Oh but what is that nice looking bit of PLASTIC you have wrapped around your iphone4? Antenna? No reception? Oh dear....But it is very heavy in comparison to GS2.. it will be lost in the hole it makes for itself in your suit pocket before long.

And speaking of time... how long do you need this metal casing to last? 10 years? NO. Now Apple's beautiful design is looking more like an expensive flaw in comparison to Samsung's light plastic. GS2 WINS again.

And about "Antennagate"... Don't try and rewrite history, it happened. A cheapo plastic case does NOT fix the MAJOR design flaw.. it only treats the symptoms.

Display - iphone wins on this does it? NO. Why? because the display is TINY!!!!! If I "upgrade" to an iphone 4 from my Desire it will feel like an expensive "downgrade" based on screen size.

There will always be a new Android phone in 3 months, you can upgrade anything you don't like when you like. For the next Apple you have to wait a year and a half for the next iphone, and you're tied into their system for the entire time. If you jailbreak it Apple will find out and bar you from using it.

If you must get an iphone now save your money and get an old 3Gs - or wait for the next iphone.
If you want Android, look at Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola Atrix or HTC Sensation.

So, everyone agree, the Galaxy S II is lighter, thinner, significantly more powerful, and light years ahead of the iPhone 4 on taking pictures and video, and has the most technologically sophisticated 4.3 inch screen on the market.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 30 May, 2011 22:54

This article was interesting, I actually am stuck between which to get... well, i was.... now i'm 100% sure I am getting the Galaxy S II... the iphone is more expensive to both buy and to run since apple don't offer free apps etc ... plus, I am a windows lover over Mac any day, and this kind of feels like the same battle to me. Even though the Mac or the i-phone have integrity and a sense of social 'wow-ness' I simply prefer what windows or the Samsung have to offer me... plus, I have bad luck with phones malfunctioning on me, and Samsung has been the sturdiest phone i've had yet.

For me its the Samsung all the way :D ... it completely suits my lifestyle, it looks great, has a better video quality.... its simple. I know many people that would find the i-pod much more sophisticated and useful for them.... but what can I say... i'm a total geek in this sense :)

For me I think a phone with so many function must match with a wider screen. yes I cant deny Iphone4 is nice and most famous, but it got a lot problem such as antenna, battery, forever 3.5" screen, expensive apps, cant display flash (nowadays majority website use flash) etc. The most important thing, when iphone 5 start sell in the market, iphone 4 would become totally outdated. The reason is simple:Iphone product is tend to be a fashion device. Same case, now who will care those who own Iphone 3GS, nobody mention it at all. But for those who rich and is a Apple fanastic fans, iphone is their idol.

I've just got a Samsung GS2 and have an iPhone 4 for work, I see this has already descended into a complete Mongfest, even 'girls fancy guys with iPhones' has already surfaced, christ.

Anyway my tuppence, both phones are great in my opinion and this article nearly nails it, the only thing I'd disagree with is the display, I prefer using the larger brighter screen of the Galaxy but I can see why the iPhone wins there. I tend to play games/listen to music more on my iPhone, everything else I prefer on the Galaxy.

All in all i'd side with the Galaxy but I expect the iPhone 4gs/5 to even up on the hardware sign of thinks.

I don't see why you all cant get along, who cares what other people buy, it's up to you, you don't have to justify your purchase to a bunch of anonymous faces on a tech website.

*display - 4.3" Super AMOLED display
*performance - dual core
*imaging - 8MP rear cam, 2MP front cam

Iphone 4 it's a Tiger electronic game and any Android device is a fully functional computer. No way you can compare Android's multitasking, notification system, connectivity, it's years forward to iOS in everything - silly to hear the opposite. IOS is easier to use and more intuitive, but also a motorbike is more intuitive compared to an airplane - less controls you have, easier it is to use. While I like Macbook pro, the new imac27 and mac os in general, Iphone is more like a toy for people that don't care about informatics. Seen iOS5 keynote, Iphone5 can beat galaxy2 only if they equip it with a star trek tricorder and with a holographic beam.

When I search the android software I found many software are similar to my 5800XM software (free software but really rubbish)..zZZ... boredx2. When i hand on this 2 phone, Iphone4 is much beautiful on design. Even though Iphone 4 a bit outdated, It still can suport ios5. Thats why it still valuable. Why everyone seem so angry when comparing their hero (SGS2) with IPhone4? Thats mean all people very care this product. Very successful product. Its like a toy? So what? matallic toy vs thin plastic computer? boredx3. If so mind specs u will never find a winner since IT products has no end and no ultimate products. HAhaha. Short-sighted people. The Galaxy S2 is 2011 hardware, and it seems silly to compare it to 2010 hardware. If you think about the product life cycle of this phone, it has generated a lot of hype, but in several months, it will most likely start to die out as consumer tastes change. The gut instinct is to compare new hardware that has just been released with year old hardware that has sold millions, so this does not make it a fair comparison.

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 2 July, 2011 01:39

I've got samsung galaxy s2, and i have to say the new hardware shows in some areas. It seems to be quite a bit faster than iPhone 4 in browsing, opening the camera, etc. But where it falls short is the design, buggy software and outdoor use.

Design: The touch sensitive back button reaches to the very edge of the phone so it is always on the way. I keep shutting down the camera when filming. Also the fact that SGS2 actually is thicker than iPhone 4 (put them on a table side by side to find out) is weird since it being thinner than even the ipad was one of the key points in the launch. The back cover seems really weak and I wonder how many openings it will last. Sim, battery and sd are behind that cover.

Buggy software: ok, so the launcher itself crashes from time to time, i've managed to get the phone jammed a bunch of times, the screen misses touches (while phone is figuring out something else), gps doesn't always work, kicks itself out of wifi, ... Don't get me started on android market and the compatibility issues of a new phone.

Outdoor use: Amoled is crap in the sun. Super Amoled is better but still crap. Super amoled plus is even better but still you have to have the screen in max brightness and maybe adjust the viewing angle or shade the screen with your hand to see what's going on. Then we have this screen on a device that boasts one very nice feature which only works well in bright daylight and requires constant monitoring on the screen... 1080p video recording.
The battery really won't last long with full screen brightness and recording 1080p video. Take a lot of spare batteries on a shooting trip and hope the back cover lasts.

I'm not saying the SGS2 is a total waste of money, but it just isn't ready. It just seems like it hasn't been thought through. It doesn't quite have the same sort of "nobody has ever once tested this feature" feel which Nokia's symbian based products have delivered, but it really can't touch iPhone 4 in terms of use value and product quality. And it certainly doesn't feel worth it's price now.

Anonymous 3 July, 2011 19:13

Android phones require double the processor power to be as smooth as the iphone? about removable batteries, even if the battery could be removed I would rather have a bunch of external battery back ups than have to remove a cover, remove a battery and insert another battery (some phones make it so hard to remove the battery they may as well not say the battery is removable)

You have all taken leave of your senses. I have iPhone 4 and its biggest flaw? iTunes. If there is another 'phone that is its equal in all other departments, then the mere fact you are not tied to Apple's nafarious attempts at emptying your pockets, and controlling the way in which you download and swap files, is to make the Samsung the clear and outright winner. I can not believe the way in which the masses have been seduced by Apples sexy HW design, and have sacrificed freedom for a pretty face. Are we realy all that fickle? From Ionpig

anonymous 18 August, 2011 14:15

For most people the real decider is the price (even though the galaxy s 2 in my opinion has the superior hardware and software). The fact of the matter is that apple charge extortionate prices for their phones. Even on a £35 a month contract (the one plan on 3, truly unlimited everything) you still have to pay £65 for the handset, whereas for the same monthly fee you can get the galaxy s2 for free! I am actually on the £30 per month contract, where i get a healthy 500mins, unlimited 3 to 3 calls, unlimited texts and (supposed to get) 1GB of internet, it seems 3 have actually given me 3GB of internet instead... but of course i am not going to chase up on it :D. Even on that £30 contract the galaxy s2 is free.

Somehow people have been brainwashed into thinking that all apple hardware is the best, not necessarily the truth but if some people want to spend extortionate amounts of money for iphones, ipads and mac computers then be my guest, i on the other hand would rather spend less and get more.

i had iphone 3g,3gs & iphone4 the 3g was good the 3gs was excellent but the iphone4 was so beautifull i loved it if anyone said any thing bad about it i would go crazy but then i started getting sick of itunes the way they controlled every thing, when i sync my phone to my computer some apps or some music would be deleted by itunes then there was the antenne signal drop but worst of all was the proximity sensor, always hanging up or placing people on hold, and no update woud fix it. the apps are good the screen is good the phone looks good but its a phone and everything else is secondry and if it can't do the main thing like make a call then it's pointless. I got sick of it so i sold it and got a samsung gs2, i was going to buy a ipod to wean me of the ios but surprisingly i didn't need to, the samsung gs2 was that good. don't get me wrong the iphone4 is an excellent gadget but as a phone its rubbish, and the next iphone will never beat the sgs2 because it will only be getting the hardware thats in the ipad 2 and thats still not as good as whats in the samsung. All you iphone lovers don't be scared to try the sgs2 you might be pleasantly surprised.

however !! i didnt get an iphone 4 cos i didnt hear any solid subtantial reasons to get one from Joe Public or Billy Applemates, other than rants and raves about apps and the camera, no real benefits to me, im a grown A$$ man, thats no selling point for me.

Muilttasking and the business features is where its at..

So my GS2 is now in the post!!! Android is a common sense move for me. I also have some issues with itunes and its lack of freedom and have concerns about apples wierd little community too, im not easily brainwashed, even as a lover of the ipod.. though apples devices are beautiful... i will be keeping my 120gig classic pod though. Simply cos i have my whole music collection in my pocket at all times and i love the touch dial that you can operate in your pocket. Thats what im about... ipod touchs are a waste of my time..

4G is not in my country, I love apps especially when they are of a high quality, I don't want an insecure phone, I want things to be simple

Close minded apple fools.. you never played well with others. Ya'll just pissed that your reason for your egotistically based self thought superioty has crumbled and failed in comparison to the awesome Galaxy S II.

Now nicely pick up your toys that you threw out of the cot and go play where you don't bother the grown ups.
