Samsung Galaxy Nexus is official name of Nexus Prime

Forget the iPhone 4S -- the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is coming. The new leader of the Android gang, previously known as the Nexus Prime, is to be unveiled next week -- and the details are already starting to emerge.

The Galaxy Nexus will be the flagship Android device, packed with bleeding-edge features and the latest version of Google's software for mobile phones, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich. That's stuffed into a 9mm thin, 4.6-inch curved phone.

Galaxy Nexus will be the official title of the phone rumoured as the Nexus Prime, Boy Genius Report claims. It sports a 4.65-inch, 720x1,280-pixel Super AMOLED HD. It has a whopping 32GB of built-in storage, with a main 5-megapixel camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls. It also shoots high-definition 1080p video.

Inside the phone is a dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 Cortex A9 processor, clocked at 1.2GHz, with 1GB of RAM. Power comes from a 1,750mAh battery. In short, it's a monster.

As the flagship Android phone, it won't be adulterated with Samsung's TouchWiz interface. But it will bear the Samsung Galaxy name, rather than just the Nexus name -- its predecessors were called the Google Nexus One and Google Nexus S.

The phone also offers a couple of features that aren't entirely relevant to us Brits: it's a 4G phone, for next-generation Web connection, and boasts near-field communication (NFC). There are decent 4G networks in the US, but the technology hasn't advanced past the trial stage here in Blighty. NFC hasn't taken off yet either, but could one day see us paying for stuff by waving our phones at NFC-equipped tills.

Those US features could mean the phone comes to Europe in a different form. We'll find out on 11 October -- keep it CNET UK for all the up-to-the-minute news!

In the meantime, here's Samsung's teaser video. Check out that curve!

Will the Galaxy Nexus give the iPhone 4S a run for its money? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below, or on our Facebook page.

have been waiting for this for ages....if these latest specs are to be believed then i'm a little disappointed. No faster than the galaxy s2 and only a 5mp camera, initial rumours were of 1.5 dual core and a12mp camera!!. Screen sounds great as does 1080p video, will have to wait and see what turns out to be true but i may just go with the s2 after all as it will be available free on much lower tariffs than the nexus.

Why is this expected to be the flagship when it only has a 5mp camera compared to the 8mp S2? Looks the 4S is going to be ahead of the pack for a little longer than a week after all.

5 or 8 mp really isn't a deal breaker, the size and quality of the sensor is more important, agree 1.2 dual core just kinda keeps up with the competition, looks like they are relying on ICS to tempt people away from the S2.Have to say it's the Galaxy Note for me going by recent tests and mugshots. 5.3 inch screen seems huge but it's the S2's big brother so can't have too much real estate, just have to buy some big pocketed jeans.

Hope we dont judge a device's ability solely on camera performance, all mobiles are inferior to the most basic of point and shoots purely due to sensor, camera is usually the last item i check if buying a new mobile.

I am a nexus s lover. It is so simple, quick and accessible to use and i hope this will be a big next step. Camera on phones are good but people who want a decent picture will actually buy a a camera for that sole purpose. I cant stand the iphone and its over priced inflated ego and its very refreshing to see others more than better the apple company on this front.

Everything good about the nexus s will just get better i hope for the prime. They should bring him out to present too!

Anyone who buys a google phone anytime soon is crazy. Think - they just bough motorola mobile. When they produce an in-house google phone it will wallop any offering another company has to give (even samsung in conjunction with google).
Wait a year before blowing half a grand.

From what ice read those initial specs could be wrong. 8mp camera and a 1.5dc processor are what's meant to be in it.
