It's white on the front and silver on the back and plays music, but it isn't an iPod. Sagem's myX-8 is a mobile phone with designer styling, a huge screen, an impressive camera -- and serious size issues.
It's taller and much thicker than a 20Gb iPod, and almost as heavy (125g to the iPod's 158g). Compared to most of today's candy-bar phones, the myX-8 is King Size. The gorgeous QVGA colour screen is some consolation, but it's coupled with teeny weeny buttons that you'll struggle to press. They add an undersized insult to the oversized injury inflicted on your trousers.
Viewed through special French sunglasses that make everything look 20 per cent smaller, there's a lot to like about the myX-8. The menus are attractive and logical. The 1.3 megapixel camera takes sharp, colourful photos, even when the lighting is poor -- and even before you activate the LED flash. You can record video and audio, listen to MP3s and zap data around using infra-red or Bluetooth. If you fill up the 40Mb of built-in memory, you can add more using miniSD cards.
We'll publish a full review when we've schlepped it around for a couple of weeks. While you're waiting, go shopping for clothes with bigger pockets. -ML
