At 6pm sharp on 29 June 2007, a single-file line of 'iWaiters' began to queue into the New York Apple store. As one CNET.co.uk's sister site News.com editor put it, "It's like the Apollo 11 astronauts walking to the launch pad." Apple used an innovative activation scheme to get customers quickly in and out of its stores by allowing iPhone buyers to activate their devices at home: a process that was not without some hurdles.
