Palm Pre gets new webOS version 1.3.1

Palm Pre owners woke up this morning to find a present on their curvy little buddy -- Palm rolled out an operating system upgrade all over Europe last night at midnight.

With webOS version 1.3.1, your contacts and calendars from LinkedIn and Yahoo join your Facebook friends and your Google contacts in the Pre's Synergy address book and calendar.

There's also a new dedicated Facebook app, a handful of fresh email features and a link to share what apps there are in the App Catalogue over email or text message. Full details of everything included in the update are available from Palm's Web site.

Unfortunately, the update doesn't restore iTunes syncing on the Pre, unless you're using iTunes version 9.0.1 or earlier. But there are lots of fantastic media managers out there -- Songbird, doubleTwist and MediaMonkey are three of our favourites. So why not throw off the iTunes shackles and try something new?

We were behind the times when the Pre was released in the UK -- we got version 1.1.3 while the US was already swanning around with version 1.2.1. But with this update, we're on the same version as Yankee Pres.

The webOS update will download automatically to your Pre as long as you have at least 30 per cent charge in your battery and you're not on the phone. Once it's downloaded, you'll get a notification that it's ready to install. If you're feeling impatient, you can manually check for the update by going to the 'updates' option in the Pre's menu.

If you've got the update on your Pre, let us know in the comments what you think of it -- and what you'd like to see in the next version of webOS.
